I did some reading on here about balancer belts snapping and causing the plate in between to start eating into the timing belt. Car has been sitting for 8 months and just got it running last month. The car drives around fine, but noticed there was a little more vibration in the steering wheel than normal. Popped open the timing belt cover and this is what I found:

First two show that there is some pretty noticeable wear on the left side of the belt and the last pic shows that the belt sits more toward the left of the gears? I'm pretty sure that something isn't stirring the coolaid here, would this be causing a squealing noise that I only hear when I get the engine up past 4500rpm? Any help would be appreciated. Going to take the car over to my car guy to have this belt replaced anyhow next week. I've been driving it around for two weeks and this just started about a week ago. 90 laser rs 2.0 N/T engine.

The belt wear is from the oil pan bolts. There are two shorter pan bolts that are suppose to go below the timing belt.

Go here, buy this:

CRP TB167-168K2 Timing Belt Kit | eBay

Install, and put it in the back of your mind for 60K or so.

Definitely make sure the pan bolts are the proper length- it appears one of the two "shorties" under the belt is cutting it.

This would be maybe the first time a mod/wiseman has recommended something like this. A $60 timing belt + balance shaft belt + all your pulleys.

Will that kit work with my Non-turbo 1G? Ill have to check the bolts.
Do you have a 2.0L? I spy 2 cam gears. The year doesn't match but a 1g setup will work fine.

Ah yes, I somehow linked you to a 2G kit. You'll need this one:

Contitech is an OEM supplier for many brands. May not be what I'd recommend for a 700hp drag car, but for a daily driver it will be absolutely fine. I wouldn't recommend junk. ;)

Sounds good, I'll get that ordered as soon as this mess with my eBay account is cleared up and have that installed. Thanks for the help, was a little worried I might have jacked something up. Car is going to get sold to pickup a decent little 92 gsx awd 5 speed that needs a little tlc :thumb:

PieEyedPiper: Yup, posted my engine on the very last part of my first post, just a little hidden

I have used that brand of timing belt kits for dd service they are good. If you are making power I would consider gates they are very good belts.

seems your going to take the motor apart to put the new timing belt on i would do a balance shaft delete. less rotating mass in your engine less strain on the balance shaft belt = less strain on the timing belt.i would highly recommend to get rid of your balance shafts. if you do that then there is less of a chance of completely F***ing your engine because of those.
