you wont believe what brand of engine oil we've been running for the past 2 yrs ROFL and it worked flawlessly for us.

but then we have a new sponsor on board so yah, we're getting some good stuff this time for FREE :hellyeah:

aite, peace.

I'm assuming it's Motul. I was full sponsored by them in 2007. But what engine oil did you use in the past and what will you be using in the future?

You don't just get stuff for free. Sponsorships are a lot of work, and to me even though you get free stuff like oil, brake fluid, etc it doesn't really make it worth it to me at least. You have to pay for play when it comes to sponsors.
Look at NASCAR drivers. During the week they are flying all over making visits for their sponsors, shooting commercials, making appearances, and then they can race.

Are the clamps you're testing Pegasus clamps? If so, that's definitely a substantial price savings at over 75% cheaper than Wiggins clamps! Hargett QDC have a nice design too but are only 60% cheaper than Wiggins.

I was surprised to find 6 different brands/styles of these clamps out there:
Adel Wiggins Clamshell
Pegasus Clamshell (Adel Wiggins clone, made by OBX)
Accufab
Vibrant Vanjen
Linder Power Systems
Hargett Precision Products Quick Disconnect Coupler (QDC)

We required flexible so that knocked a few off the list. Not because the engine mounts move, but because the entire front chassis flexes due to engine power output (quote a lot too).

Would the fuel cooler help those of us with Walbro pumps cool the fuel at all?

I have often wondered of phase change cooling for the fuel system in a drag racing application. It makes since to me it would help to inject 30*F fuel into the combustion chamber vs 100+. Not to say I am thinking about re-routing AC lines LOL. But a tank to go around a metal fuel cell which you could put dry ice in?

Your thoughts gixxer?

we've been using NAPA synthetic 15W50 oil ever since the 2007 Land Speed race season. now we're using Redline Oil for RTA.

I would not use a phase change cooling system for fuel. I've seen that done for intercooling and resulting in sandblasted pistons by frozen fuel droplets. You'd have to tightly control the temperature (difficult) and phase change cooling is quite heavy and expensive. I don't think its a good selection for road racing at least.

I think those aeromotive pumps are originally designed for ground refueling rigs, they have issues with cavitation. The boiling point drops to a very low temperature and my fuel system would lock out and stop me dead in my tracks. It took very high tarmac temps (120 degree day in the desert) and over an hour of use before I run into a problem and thats even with the aeromotive voltage controller, so the cooler was born.

Maybe a thermal barrier of Zirconia? I was surprised when you said tungsten carbide .

Love watch your progress.

Kevin

Yes, its Zirconia Oxide, applied by plasma gun. Really cool stuff. Expensive but cool. Just doubled the cost of the exhaust manifold!

So are there any races in Florida that you'll be at with the spyder?

Also, the youtube video is amazing.

Thanks man! Well unfortunately, traveling to florida would be greater than a whole 2 mos of R&D budget for the car so that's not really in our future unless someone came through with the $$$$

I have a little announcement to make here. During the break in the summer when Redline goes to east coast region. I will be traveling to Japan and working with some race team(s) there so I'll be posting updates from my little apartment in Yokohama. I will be there from June through September and back just before the Pahrump event in sept.

Oh how nice, work for a team here, work for a team there, just a little travel involved.....
Thats got to be awesome. To be exposed to all different types of the automotive sporting world. Best of luck and have fun.

I wish I could experience such things :(

Sounds like your having the time of your life, have fun, stay safe, and keep the updates coming!

Drew, can I ask how you got involved/associated with races teams over there (or even over here for that matter)? What have you done in your past to get you where you are today? It seems like some really interesting and awesome stuff you're apart of!! I'm in the wrong field to be doing anything associated with cars, especially of that caliber. But what would it take someone to be working with these types of teams?

Good luck, have fun, and share stories and pictures :thumb:

Sounds like such a drag Drew. LOL Have fun man.

Hey, I just noticed the title of this "thread" is "Time Attack Build Blog".... a little ironic? Maybe there's a "build thread" floating around the blog section to offset this irony. :)

Thats a really long story actually but all this stuff has come from the different people I've met over years of racing and traveling. It's really the friends I've made and the people I trust. Same with what has built the car. One of the biggest assets I have, is the flexibility at my job. I can work from anywhere in the world, so basically I am willing to go to any point in the globe and do whatever it takes to learn something. That has been my biggest ally, IMO and I've been like that for a while.

I can take up opportunities that most people would say 'only in dreams' and I started doing that for smaller things and now a lot of doors opened as a butterfly effect. I have no fear of working myself to death, and I do. In all honesty that's whats carried me this far, but I feel I have so far to go still. I'm getting closer and I love it. Japan is great, I really like it there. I'd ditch the US and stay there if I could to be honest. Each time I stayed there there, I felt like that. I havent even really gotten hooked up in the Japan car scene yet and they are really 'car crazy'. I think this trip is going to be a blast.

I had to work really hard for a long time to get a job setup like I have now. It took about 5-7 years with that as my goal and a LOT of long long hours and hard work and I still do, for example I worked 114 hours over 8 days a few weeks ago. I decided that as I had successes I wanted to use them to buy myself more freedom and flexibility instead of more money and I've found that the time ended up being worth the money.

I wish I could experience such things :(

I wish I could really sit back and enjoy it, its more like CRAZY. Hopefully this time in Japan I get a chance to relax and appreciate! I get back home from working on making this race and I have 3 wks until I leave the.

I know its a rough life haha well, I love my life I gotta tell the truth, but the thing I look forward to the most right now, is the food. The food in Japan owns all. When I went there in 06 I stayed for 3 mos I couldnt even eat US food without feeling sick for a couple of weeks. It's REALLY good.

No kidding! what kind of food are they feeding you there?

I want to make it to F1, maybe someday. I'll work hard for it but I'd be happy with Super GT or ALMS, FIA GT, Aussie V8 supercars. F1 is my dream though. I really look up to Rob Smedley. He made it through the ranks of motorsport to F1 in just ten years. Currently he is at Scuderia Ferrari as Felipe Massa's Race Engineer. One thing is that I have had a lot of people who helped me out, shared knowledge with me and everything to help me get this far, but the higher up I go the less I'm allowed to talk about what I know. So I'm trying to share anything I can without getting in trouble, as a way to give back but it keeps getting harder.

damn, thats tight Drew! your finally going to work with some Drift teams out there!! nice!! :D

hope you can help them design a aero package to make their drift cars slide more and be stable @ 150+ mph! :sneaky:

'
Most of the same kinds of foods you would expect to find in the states, everything from crab legs, to this BS they call stake (but taste like camel) sub's, salads, rice, fish etc. It just was not as greasy and prepared more with nutrition in mind over taste.

Well, maybe i'll catch a glimpse of your work one day. F1 is growing like you wouldn't believe in the middle east. Bahrain has been hosting F1 races for years, and they go all out at their track events, even hosting the yearly "Gulf Run"(similar to Europe's Bull Run). Last year the Gulf Run started in Kuwait(I got to see them off and take photos) and ended in Bahrain, at the F1 track for all out racing of various makes and models. And if you havn't already heard, the UAE is getting in on the F1 action this year, and they plan on making a huge splash in the racing world. Abu Dabi will have a major F1 track as well, and Dubai has an F1 themed park that is no joke. Look it up, its not cheesy at all. Heck, over the past year i have noticed more Supra's and Evo's with UAE/Saudi/Bahrain Tags on the streets of Kuwait. I don't like them one bit, with their shiny exhaust tips, huge turbo's, flashy FMICs, and carbon fiber....stuff.....:| and my DSM is stock....

I have no idea how to design an aero package for going slower through a corner LOL

I heard there is a lot of car nuts over in the middle east! I would love to check that out someday! I did know about the F1 schedule. Really amazing and I didnt know how crazy they got into the races over there. I will definately look into that!

One interesting thing about automotive sports in the middle east.....all the techs/tuners/mechs/designers are Expats from all over. Kids don't grow up tweaking their rides locally, it just isn't a common thing here like in north america or asia. So all the talent is hired from outside. Most of the people i have met that worked for race teams in the region were British/Aussie/German professionals.
