Considering a 2g Time Attack build

As for wheels, I use the Mustang SVT replicas (17x9, $100 each plus shipping), which handle up to 245 x 17 tires just fine. You may also be able to get these in 17x10, which will handle 275x17 tires. I am running 10x17 CCWs right now with 275 Hoosiers, but the wheels belong to my buddy's 3000GT VR4 and I have to give them back. In the rear (on a 1G) you have to use 10mm spacers with the 10x17s, else they will hit the lower control arm. You also have to raise it up a little so they don't hit the fender. Or, you can flare the fenders. No problems with the 17x10s up front on a 1G.

(No, the 17x10s don't go with the car if I sell it)

Wheels sticking out that much are creating a lot of turbulent drag. Even a stock car can get a lot of turbulent drag from tucked wheels, but the huge 17x10's that can't tuck take it to another level.

I won't know what i'm doing about wheels or tires until i finalize suspension and chassis fabrication. I still need to figure out something with an intercooler. We might just make one unless we find a sponsor of some sort. Doing the math on this thing is already giving me a migrane. LOL

Were you planning on doing alky or meth injection for an I/C as well??

That might help explain why I could only get 145 mph on the straights at Road America. I thought it was the missing air dam, but maybe it was the wide tires, too. I was sure my car, with its additional horsepower, would pull 7200 rpm on the straights (153 mph), but I couldn't quite get there. Just goes to show you how important good aero is.

Would be nice if they sold as many wide body body parts for 1g's as they do for 240sx's. I think there's a decent looking wide body kit out there for a 2g, maybe just use the fender covers and not the whole kit.

On the track it will run race gas only. On the street it will run Meth injection.

very true. We saw this a lot with the EVOs. :shhh:

I guess you can gain speed in the turns, but lose speed on the straight. It would be interesting to see which would help/hurt more.
I would imagine the loss of 8mph on the straight for x number of seconds would add up to be a lot.

Road America has three very long straights so, yes, it does add up.

The fastest one is from the Kink to Canada Corner, because you leave the Kink at about 115 mph, and then you have a half mile or so to gain speed before braking for Canada Corner. It's not really a straight, just a long, long sweeping curve taken at 140+ through the trees and it gets pretty scary--especially because you just want it to keep going on forever, but then you see the brake markers coming up around the last bend --oh shit!--and you have to brake very hard.

But man, what a rush! Of all the places I've run, that stretch is the ginchiest--the very essence of road racing.

I think where a lot of advantage can be gained is under braking as well. I wonder if great brakes would make up for that 8-10 mph difference on the straights??? I know at Road America I can make up 5-8 car lengths on some cars coming into turn one. That would happen a lot with the Vette's.

If I don't sell the car,
I like where your heads at man.

Revs bay. revs.
I like where your heads at man.

now i just need a bare 7 bolt block and head to get rockin!
Nice, another person who is unafraid of the 7 bolt. There is a local guy (twicks 69) doing 740-ish WHP with his DD (yes he does drive it, a lot).

because you leave the Kink at about 115 mph, .
115?! I can't wait to get on some R compounds.

yeah buddy. I've been in the DSM game all of my life (driving life) and I am confident that we can put together a 7 bolt that will take all of the punishment without issue.

SBR has been a great resource for me. Mike and I have been going back and fourth quite a bit. He is really excited about this project too.

Marti

Modified for now at Redline Time Attack and kind of see where we can enter from there.

To be honest Marty Grand and/or CJ Moses will be driving the car competitively at first. I have a long way to go and these two guys will help me get there in a big way. I can't wait!

I am looking for another 7 bolt long block to send to SBR so it can be built while i try to sneak in some track time on a 400ish hp setup to really find the weaknesses of my chassis.

Hey Marti, don't forget to post build pics along the way! :thumb:

I'll definitely be watching this thread with interest.

well yesterday i took apart a bunch of the front facia, headlights and got her up in the air some more to really get to look over everything.

I have only one issue to really deal with.....

I already showed it to the guy at the body shop handling the whole car (awesome that he is just next door to my shop! :thumb: ) He said it's no problem and he will be able to make it stronger than ever. Looks like we'll be doing a lot of that and a whole lot of chassis welding. He said the rust doesn't seem to go all the way through either.

Here is a profile pic of that car after we pushed her back outside.

Marti, what class will you try to compete in?

you know what my real goal is with this? I want to show that a DSM can be built to be competitive with the new cars and be driving home right after. I don't think we get enough respect in a wolrd now dominated by EVOs and STis. Granted we're responsible for a lot of the monster EVOs and Subies around here ROFL but I think it's time to show the rookies that old pa DSM can hang with the best of them.

I always believed the same, and accomplished a bit of it myself with my 1G.

NASA handicaps me a bit too much in TTS/PTS class with its AWD hp/wt penalty (they penalize me, but not the Evos and STIs, because they are four doors), but I still think a 1G is a potential national champion. It has the hp, because it runs down the straights with all the big boys--M3s, Z06es, Mallet 440s, M coupes, and even Evos and STIs--but the handling needs to be set up better. A little aero, more caster, and lowering (if possible) would make it stick better and be more competitive at the national level.

We've been lobbying NASA to drop the AWD hp/wt penalty, because it would let me tune it up from 355 to 410 hp, the same as Z06es in the class, but NASA isn't buying it. Maybe it's time for me--or the new owner--to consider running Time Attack instead.

As much as I hate body kits they do a damn good job of getting the vehicle's body lines closer to the ground while maintaining decent suspension range. What would be really nice is a way to change the mounting point of the bottom of the shock absorbers on the lower arms somehow in order to let the car sit lower while still maintaining decent angles on the control arms and still maintain a lower ride height. Greg Collier ran one that didn't look too bad and it's crossed my mind a few times for aero purposes.

I saw your whole argument in the NASAforums.com thread. I was gonna speak up but decided most of the guys there are ignorant about 2door awd cars anyway. DSMs have always been treated unfairly, so whatever, im just going to do unlimited class and not worry.

Plus we know Marti is gonna do this right, he had a good amount of ideas before when I was looking at ideas for tranny coolers, and he came up with a good solution, too bad I was broke. I am just glad we are finally getting someone that is here for the community and is really going to show all these Evos up, hell make it faster than Marty Grand's car. That would be hilarious.
