1G Throttle body is leaking

well, i have decided to save up for a new tb. even though its over kill. i am getting a timing job done and the car will be tied up for a few weeks (school is working on it) in the meantime i plan on getting a few parts. my tb is leaking and thats a good enough excuse for me to get a new one rather than just replace the seals. im looking to keep it cheap but also performance oriented.

i just want to know what are some good ones for a decent price and are they direct bolt ons? what about sensors? will a larger one help my gas mileage? any input is welcome.

what does he usually charge? i can just get new seals for 15 dollars and re-build it myself. i was looking more for a performance add on as well.
 
Your mod list consists of "k&n filter, big 16g turbo, punishment blow off valve, and manual boost control". Please read through these links, and show me where a 75mm TB falls in the grand scheme of things. :)

I mean no offense, but honestly you are about 5 years and 700hp away from needing that throttle body. Talk to Brian about a freshly rebuilt 1G TB, or buy some $15 seals for your stock 2G TB and get on down the road. I think you're over-analyzing this a bit. :)

i totally agree, i know its overkill but your telling me there absolutely no benifits from this? i realize 75mm is just rediculous but its cheaper than the other ones. if your honestly telling me there will be no benefit from this even after i do the ic piping and stuff then i will just get a reman or do it myself.
 
There is absolutely no point in buying the 75mm TB unless you're spending a lot of money to upgrade every other aspect of the engine so that the larger IC pipes and TB are even necessary. Not to mention you'll need a lot of knowledge to deal with all the modifications that TB will require.

Let's say someone wanted you to fill a swimming pool, but they will only let you put in one gallon of water per hour. Would you pay $170 for a shiny new 5 gallon bucket, or use the 1-gallon bucket that you already have? :D

The upgrade paths are there for a reason. There are SO many ways you could put that $170 to actual good use, rather than buying a part that most of us (even the more serious ones) would never need.
 
I would go with the 1g throttle body. They flow a little better than the 2gs. on top of that if you still have the stock elbow you can do a very slight port job on that. I learned this from Robert Garcia of Road Race Engineering.
 
Use a 60mm 1G TB and be done with it. 75mm is to big, and it wont match up well with anything else unless your swapping out to bigger everything else. Going overkill in some areas of a build is fine, but when it comes to things like cams, smim, tb e.c.t you actually start to compromise performance by going to big. It's like building blocks or something LOL, you have to match everything up to make it all come out right.

As stated already, most people on this site won't benefit from anything larger than a 1g throttle body. If you don't believe me, PM twicks69 and ask him how much hp he put down on a 1g throttle body.

I usually recommend a 1g throttle body to 2g guys as it's an upgrade (larger bore). But some people don't want to take the intake manifold off to port it, or don't have the intercooler piping to really take advantage of it, so they go with a 2g.

If your opening on the throttle body is bigger than the one on the intake manifold, by not porting it, you aren't gaining anything. It is just like saying you are going to fit a 3 inch downpipe to your stock exhaust for better flow.

It will hurt your idle and low speed drivability. It will make it jumpy and not smooth. Also in the case of bolting a huge throttle body one a stock manifold with out porting it, I can see it actually hurting your flow because the air will hit a wall as it passes into the manifold.

Here is a quote from Magnus Motorsports on Large throttle bodies. Keep in mind that this is with an aftermarket intake manifold with a matched opening. Also "all out performance" is way over 500 hp, so it really doesn't even apply to you. It assumes a much larger turbo, larger intercooler pipes, larger throttle body, an aftermarket intake manifold, and an engine management system (not to mention all the supporting mods). However there are one or two lines that I think you should read.

Alot of questions I am getting are regarding throttle body choices.

Here are pros and cons about throttle bodies.

Its no secret the throttle body is the biggest restriction ahead of your intake manifold. According to our testing, larger throttle bodies have always yielded better response and power. We even went as far as to test this manifold on the smallest of throttle bodies which is the 2g. It still made power on the 2g up top, but the reduction in flow of these small throttle bodies does harm your spool.

So if you are looking for all out performance, I suggest 75 - 90mm throttle body. Using a 90mm throttle body and the accompanying larger intercooler pipe, will remove the restriction in the big bend before the TB entry, making this the best solution for you to make power and response.

Remember when setting up a large throttle body in order to avoid any failures it should only open to 97 percent with the pedal to the floor. This will make sure you don't break the shaft. make sure there is no tension in the throttle cable when at WOT. If necessary install a pedal stop.

Large throttle bodies can be jumpy on the street, because thier small throttle angles allow more air to pass the blade, at small openings they will be letting more power in. This can be tuned out of your car by killing timing off idle. I can make a 100mm throttle body car with 12.5: compression strker, idle around the pits like a Cadillac.

If you want Idle quality and a less jumpy motor a stock throttle body is the way to go. Only problem is most DSM throttle bodies are in bad condition, so this may not be your problem make sure to check this first.

All in all I'd lean towards a new throttle body and make it a large one please, their are plenty gains to be had from it.

Don't forget we can design and make anything here, so if you guys need an idle motor solution, we can help design and build it. I have been thinking of making a remote idle motor adaptor to be used with any throttle body and still use a DSM idle motor that can help some guys who like to street drive their cars

Lastly we do offer an adaptor that can run the stock throttle, and then you can toss the adaptor and switch to a larger unit in the future if you wish. This is another good option.

If I were you I would replace the seals yourself, or send it off to someone for a complete cleaning and overhaul. If you want a performance increase, buy a rebuilt 1g throttle body and port your manifold. If you aren't going to port your manifold, don't waste your money. Also my advice is for the time being forget that larger throttle bodies even exist and focus on the basics.

It's already been posted in this thread (thanks Craig!) but I think it's important so here it is again: 2g Upgrade Paths. Follow them as they are proven and work to help you get the most out of your mods in a specific order. You will think us later.
