Thermostat Housing, which one do I have/ Use?

A few months back I got a thermostat housing off a 91 GSX (IIRC). I bead blasted it then had it powder coated to match the rest of my setup but now that I'm getting ready to swap my old Tstat-housing out I notice that both of them are a little different from each other. I have a 90 Turbo 2.0 CA Fed (I believe) but I think the thermo housing on there now is from a 1.8L.

As you can see it does not have the "Emissions Control Thermo-Valve" sensor. It does have all the other sensors and I do have the emissions stuff still. So if its the wrong one it wasn't me

Now a problem with the new one is that it does not have a slot for the "Water Temperature Gauge Unit".

Whats the deal? Seems like the previous owner did some weird stuff:ohdamn:.

Could I still swap them and just plug the Emissions control sensor since I'm not using one now? What would I do about the missing Water temp gauge sensor?

90's and 91's are different, and the pictures you have show that. You should be fine just swapping over your sensors from the old one. I have a 91 motor/t-stat housing in my 90, everything is fine. Oil-cooler line is blocked off, I still have the '90 OFH.
 
Sorry to hi jack but don't want to start a new thread for this. If I'm using a 1990 oil cooler with a 91 water pipe, could I loop that thermo valve line from thermostat to water pipe? I'll be using the hard water line that connects the valve to old oil cooler that bolts to the oem turbo....if not, any ideas?

That would be counterproductive I believe, stick a bolt in the end of the hoses and hose clamp them down.
 
The thermo-valve, as noted in the diagram above, is used on cars made to meet the specifications of federal emissions. It is not used in cars made for California emissions. Seeing as you are in California, your vehicle may not require it. If that is the case, all you need to do is plug the #2 hole in the housing and be done with it.

OP, the housing you picked up does have the slot for the gauge unit. It has been plugged by (using my diagram you posted as reference) the #3 plug. As stated, you should have no issue swapping the sensors from your other housing. One last thing, it looks like you have a 1991+ housing or one that has been drilled for a second nipple to feed the oil cooler. Do make sure that gets plugged if it is a through-hole.

You could loop them if you wanted to. You would need some sort of nipple in place of the thermo-valve to allow coolant flow. It wouldn't be counterproductive, per say, it's just another line you have to ensure doesn't leak.

Or thread a bolt into the water pump to plug off the water pipe.
