The 14b Drag Race Discussion Thread

Mike Gombos was running his 2g in the mid 12s at 110ish. Full weight car on street tires.

Yeah quickest I've came across is a 12.5, I think I can give a good run at that. That time was done with a 5 speed too so curious to see how well my auto stacks up.

For anyone interested in following, i started my build thread in the drag journal section. Nothing too exciting yet, but its in work.

I'm there!:thumb:

Did a quick search through this thread but didnt see anything, anyone know what the fastest 14b powered 2g is? I wouldn't mind shooting for that this summer.

You should make quick work of beating that 12.5. A friend ran 12.8@103 back at the 1998 DSM Shootout with filter, boost, 14b, and 3" turbo back in a full weight '96 Talon AWD. Good luck!

When it comes to drag racing, there isn't much difference between 1G's and 2G's. When you get rid of silly things like airbags and sunroof, 2G's carry 60-80lbs penalty, so they are basically the same weight as 1G's.

It so happens that most 14b guys are starting out with a 1G's (partially because 2G's usually get a 16G as an upgrade from the T25).

Yeah, I bought a FWD 1g just for its mildly built motor but it also has some bolt on goodies like the 14b that I'm going to throw onto my bone stock auto 2g to get the modding process started on it. It's going to a hx35 setup later in the year but figured I'd see what I could push out of that lil 14b before I did.

As far as we know, there has been no serious 2g effort, so likely 13's or slower.

Crap, I was running mid-high 12s with a 14b in 2001 with my 95. That wasn't a serious effort though, just my daily driver. :) Fastest one on the DSMtimes list is an 11.8 at 118. Most 2g guys didn't bother with 14Bs at all, since it was the same amount of work to put a 16g in the car. I would have skipped right over it, but the 14b was 125 bucks and I was desperate to beat by ex-GF's supercharged civic before the track closed for the season. :D Memories...

Considering some locals here were at 13.30s with T25's in full weight street cars.....a second quicker with the 14b should be doable without having to strip all the weight out. And, if you do strip the weight out.....

Yup, my car was in the 13.7 range on the T25 and the 14b put it straight in the 12.80 range. Those were the good old days when 12s seemed fast and I only had 1800 bucks in mods at that point, half of which went to the shiney new Buschur exhaust...

Exactly........out of my total of $710 for my first round of mods.....ATR cat-back was $500 of that......those were fun days:hellyeah:

New personal best for me! I went from a 14.1 @ 113 to a 13.1 @ 110 with the addition of Hoosier DOT drag radials. You can read more here and see the time slip data and the video: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/dsm-build-journals/418713-9-eclipse-n-t-turbo-fwd-street-drag-autox.html#post152785687. Stock unported 14b, FWD, full interior (even the jack).
Hey Nate, Congrats! Glad to see you are still plugging away. I have not had the Talon to the track since that day I was out there with you guys. Shortly after that I went to Japan and picked up my family. The Talon has been in the garage since. I have a young one that keeps me busy around the clock. In February or March my brother should be coming out here for a few months with his 1G Eclipse. Maybe then I will get around to get my issues with the Talon fixed and out to the track. I still have issues with the new fuel pump and my ignition coil is all but toast.
It is nice to see people still playing with the 14b after all these years. I enjoyed reading through all the post I had missed. Dont get on here nearly as much anymore. I saw folks talking about the the mods they did back in the day. I remember my first few from the mid 90's. It was a "hacked" MAS, HKS Fuel cut defencer, and an HKS exhaust that looked almost exactly like the stock exhaust. I know you remember those Phil.

Thanks Jose!! I was really hoping to go to the track tomorrow for one last shot this year but its supposed to get cold and rain tomorrow afternoon. Looks like 12's will have to wait 'til the track reopens in February/March.

I have a spare 1g coil pack in my garage, I've never used it or tested it but you can have it and give it a try if yours if shot. Your brother has a 1g too? Wow, a whole DSM family! If you need an extra hand working on your car on day I'm just an hour or so away and wouldn't mind coming up there and helping out. :thumb:

Thats a bummer about the track. Around here the forecast is calling for snow. But like everyone has been saying, with your mph you have a 12sec car. Just a matter of time. Thanks for the offer I may take you up on that, the coil and the help that is. My brothers 1G Eclipse is even white also.

I've been hearing about a wintery mix Friday night and into Saturday but knowing El Paso it will just be cold and wet. I acctually typed "is his 1g white too?" But then I thought it was a dumb question and I deleted it. ROFL Sure thing, just let me know ahead of time so I can make sure I have the day off and I'll bring the DSM up there and we'll all get your 1g squared away so it won't have to sit anymore!

Oh yeah...the tiny little 2 3/8 inch piping. Still big compared to about 1 3/4 inch stock exhaust. Before the HK$ there was the 2.25" Dynomax that sounded really good, was cheap, and also maintained a pretty stock appearance. Good to see you back here again, hope you get your car back to snuff and hit that 11 in 2012....

Thanks Phil. I do remember the dynomax. Man I'll need to look but I think I still have a Turbo magazine with some of the old ads for some of those things we bought back then. It would be cool to take a look again through them. Especially with how far DSMs have come(namely the 4G63-I dare to say it is the Chevy small block of the import world).
That would be awesome to hit an 11 second pass in 2012. I did my 12.1 in 2004. I have had probably no more than 10 total quarter mile passes since then. Of which almost all of them were with Nate this past year. The car went into storage shortly after my 12.1 run and was stationed overseas. It will be nice to get the car running strong again. But all these years of having to store the car have been taking its toll. We'll see what happens.

I'm just glad this thread is still active. It's got me all pumped up for next year.
Got my FP manifold in, found a good deal on an extrude honed intake, and got me a score on an evo 3 turbine housing. Last missing pc is the cams. I'll be fixing my built engine over the winter and should have a very good start on taking a stab at this 14b record.

What cams are you planning? I know a lot of people have posted on here that they are making the most power with the biggest powerband using stock cams. I'm hoping to be going after that record too. I'll be starting out on stock cams...might even try adjustable cam gears on stock cams to see if I can move the powerband up in the rpm range at all.

I am looking to run a 264 based cam. The record was set with that sized cam
and I personally believe that it's gonna benefit me and make the power I want to run good times.

For sure! I have some old mags as well, quite a few actually. And yes some of those ads are cool to look at.

I think that you'll find your car comes back to life pretty quick. Over the last 5-7 years my car has been doing alot of sitting as well. But, it never protesed once when I tried to fire it up.....and it always went out to the track and performed beyond my expectation. Definitely want to see some pics up here once you get it all cleaned up....it's a killer looking Talon.

My DSM is down for some winter upgrades. A second trip to the drag strip with the DR's never happened but that is ok... I'll be ready to tear it up in the spring! :hellyeah:

I had no plans to get cams just yet but a local DSMer was selling a set of genuine HKS 264's for a price that I couldn't pass up. Plus after rereading the AMS cam test where the HKS 264's picked up 14 hp and almost 40 ft. lbs. of torque without losing any spool or off boost power on a 16g... I figure its worth some of that on a 14b (especially ported with a larger hotside). I'm just trying to decide on a set of springs and retainers now. I won't be revving super high obviously and these are mild cams but I still don't think I'm going to trust my 20 year old stock springs.

Also going on with the cams and springs will be a set of blue viton valve seals, a ported 7 cm turbine housing, MAP stainless o2 housing, Tial 38mm wastegate, and SCE copper turbo gaskets. Plus I'll be porting my 2g exhaust manifold and doing some cosmetic stuff that painting the engine bay and shaving and polishing my intake manifold. I think it will make a nice improvement to my 14b setup. The only downside with dropping all this stuff in at once is that I won't get to see which parts makes which (if any) improvement. Oh well, as long as I go faster in the spring!

Since you're going to drop some cams in you should think about getting some evo rocker arms.

I had never thought about them before but I just looked into it. 4 grams lighter per rocker and about 15 years newer. For what I'll be revving to it shouldn't be an issue but if I run across a used set at a good price I may be interested. Thanks!

I bought mine for 70 shipped. Not a bad deal for a good little upgrade. If you are a member of evolutionm just look around in the partouts. I tried to run some evo beehives with my kelford 272's ; They didnt like it too much.

I was going to shoot for the fastest 2G with a 14b for the fun and challenge of it before I sold, and for what it's worth the fastest 2G with a 14B I've come across is 11.87 as stated before, her is a rundown. I decided against it since I didn't want to pull alot of weight out of the car
