Ok man, just figured I'd offer it to you first. Good luck.

I do appreciate the offer, and I still may need to buy another head. Will know for sure after I hear results of teardown from machine shop on my first head. I just wanted to explain that Im not "giving up" on racing or the records, but that my budget and time constraints are forcing me to make the choice:

Go to the shootout with a half-assed, untuned, non-competative setup and stretch my budget to make it out to the race. I'd make it to the race and have niether a shop at the records or of running well in the DST class.

OR

Spend what little I had planned on for travel costs on fixing the car properly and increasing the chances that maybe one of the 4 records will be in reach this season.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the budget to do everything this year, and I guess Im going to choose to stay home from the shootout and save the travel costs since Im in no shape to run well at this point. I can flounder around just as well at my local track.

Nate,
With your success at what you have done already with your car do you think maybe a local pa/nj shop could sponsor you? If they could take the cost of one or two items it may get you close. Although I do understand the other complications with family and what not. What if you went back to last years engine/16g set up before the car broke since you know what it does and how to do it.

Cool. I hear you on that. Ok, hopefully you'll be back out this fall.

killer idea....

I don't have much of an update other than that I've accrued a few more parts. ARP head studs, cam bolts, harmonic bolt, and mains. Ok....there may be a couple other parts but I'll leave it at that for now:shhh:

So, noone else but Nate has been to the track this year with the 14b?

hmmmmmm........14b's have to be on the endangered list by now...possibly heading for extinction.

Anyone?

Phil,
a few posts ago you mentioned you were gonna stay quiet and just kinda hang low. has there been a secret revival that your not telling us about? Im glad you have been getting parts for your car. Atleast you haven't closed the book yet on it. Why the need for new head bolts and a balancer bolt? I think your going to do something crazy to make us say " so thats what hes been doing the past year" Keep it up phil!! 14b's are headed for extinction. I have one with a 16g housing sitting in my basement waiting for my fiances 2g

I hope to have my 14b auto out in about a week or two. Will be around 2700lbs with me in it so no record breaking runs but im going to let that little 14b show me what its got haha. Its got the 7cm housing and tuning sd so it should lay it down, we'll see.

I'm 100% ready to run since the dyno, finally got the car inspected. I would've run by now but I've been busier than usual traveling for work, just got home from Sweden. I was planning to run tomorrow night but it's looking like 60% chance of t-storms, so I'll probably shoot for Sunday or one night next week. Gonna be real interesting trying to pedal a FWD down the track, but the car is pulling hard when it hooks up on the street.

Sweet...good luck!

I can imagine it pulls real hard. Ok, best of luck!

Finally hit the track the other night. Unfortunately it was Friday night Midnight Madness and the place was so packed I only got two runs in. First run was just for warm-up, I think it was a 13.5ish. Second run I tried turning the two-step back up to normal and my laptop was dead, apparently it can't survive off the power cord anymore :banghead:

Ran an 12.83 @ 110 with a 1.9 60'

Wasn't pretty I short shifted every gear, trying to get used to the NLTS, I think I hit 1st-2nd at like 6300, and the 2nd to 3rd at 6000, kind of embarassing. I would've liked to get another run in, but knowing I couldn't get an actual launch I packed it up and drove home. I would've been lucky to get to the starting line before they closed up anyways. I definately need some seat time, planning on getting back out soon. It's time for a boost leak test, crushing the bov, and putting link on the good laptop so I can start tuning properly. At least getting out has gotten me motivated again.

Glad to hear you made it out Shane.:) And I know what you mean with the seat time and motivation. You definetely need to have seat time to help with the driving, and because it's fun, the motivation follows. Good luck!:thumb:

Finally hit the track the other night.
Ran an 12.83 @ 110 with a 1.9 60'

With so little passes it's hard to get in the groove....but, 12.8 with a 1.9 is movin....obviously still a low 12 second effort....

It was terrible I kind of wish I hadn't even gone. Sitting in line for that long sucks and I definately didn't get in the groove haha. It was nice to meet up with some other dsmers and an old buddy of mine who I sold my first 1g to. Hadn't seen him in a couple years, running a trans am now though. But the good thing is I got a little motivation back. And a 12.8 @ 110 isn't terrible for a 1.9 60, except that with a 1.9 last year I ran a 12.47 LOL. I have alot of tuning to do. I've been having an issue with a film building on my plugs and then I'm getting knock. I switched to a set colder plugs and it seems better after the track outing but I'm not positive what it's from. The best/worst guess is a possible HG issue with a little moisture getting in there since it's a whitish/ash film. The other is too hot a plug being I was running 6's. Let's hope for the latter. I'm going to retorque the ARP's just in case, I need to pull the valve cover off due to a little leakage anyways. That and I've never done a boost leak test after the fmic install, which could be important. Pretty much just being too lazy and busy with life.

What I would do for a 1.9 60'! ROFL

I know you were disappointed with your night's results but like you said it gave you some motivation so thats good at least! I have yet to try my NLTS even though its set up. I need to make a mental effort to try it, otherwise habit takes over. Keep with it and I know you will see those times drop. Now stop being lazy and do that boost leak test! :thumb:

It was terrible I kind of wish I hadn't even gone.

I hear that....I've had that happen to me and that's why I'll never go to a standard "test n tune" ever again with the Talon. I've only been to full day rentals with that car in the last 7-8 years. It costs way too much time and money just to get to the track......so the only way its worth it for me is to pretty much run when I want and as much as I want. At previous track rentals I can pretty much drive straight down the staging lanes and hit staging almost immediatley.

Test n Tunes are really Pay-Wait-Run-Wait-Run-Wait....and if you're lucky that keeps going.......

On the flip side, the night I finally broke the stock turbo record back in '01....I ran three passes only and the 3rd pass was it.....but that's when the car was still really streetable and there was no towing etc.

If thats the case I must have been very lucky then to chat with you and bullet at LVD that saturday a few years back :thumb: I will only do Saturdays at LVD cause thats when all the fast cars are there and your not waiting like a fool for the guys running in the 17's ROFL

On a side note I've been tuning my 14b at 19psi lately and have noticed in the heat of the day its a real slug compared to the cool mornings or evenings. I mean it really pulls hard when temps are in the 70's or lower. This problem was barely noticeable with my old car with a 16g. Is this normal with the 14b? I'm running a buschur street fmic which I though would be good enough for the 14b  Its been a long long time since I've run a 14b so I'm not sure what to expect LOL I can only assume its normal considering the boost I'm running

Yeah...that's normal. You're taking a turbo that's starting to run out of it's efficiency range and adding heat to the equation which only hurts power...so yes, it should feel like a slug in hot temps. If you're running Ethanol or water/meth injection, it should help out a bit.

Yeah, that Saturday was my first day out in about 2 years. Just wanted to shake the car down. I've run in some super hot weather and hauled ass. But, on the street, with that much boost, sitting at stoplights and such...forget it.....

Yeah I just didn't image it would be this bad though. Considering your on race gas I wouldn't think you would suffer nearly as bad as I am on 93 pump gas.

Probably not but the car just lays down through the second 1/8. If was making the same power through the second 1/8 that I am in the first, I'd most likely be running 11.20's. The heatsoak kills my power, my guess is I'm down 40-50 HP. I do have a better FMIC now so we'll see...

Thought I'd join in on this. With current mods and two other that I have done. Which are DSMchips Eprom. With stutter box and NLTS. Also its tuned or 11:1 AFR. And a snow performance water/meth kit. running the smallest nozzle in the kit. With all that, High humidity and heat I ran a 13.62 at 99.80 with a 1.9 60ft

I have a keydiver chip waiting to go in to. Right now at 19psi I'm seeing timing hit 23* or more from 5-7k which I think is too high for my boost and causing my knock especially on pump gas. I'm having to dump a lot of fuel to get rid of it. I'm hoping the less aggressive timing maps of the keydiver chip will help that and let me lean it out more. I don't have a wideband yet but if I hit anything lower than .94 o2 volts (pretty rich right?) on the logger I start seeing knock. I know thats not very accurate LOL but when you use it on multiple runs and compare them it gives you a general idea of where you are. Right now my idc's are touching 90% on my evo 560's which sounds like too much on a 14b at 19psi right? My old 16g dsm at 20psi only pushed the 560's to 85% idc's. I'd be pretty happy with a 13.6 with my mods in the high heat. :thumb:

Thats exactly how my car acts in the heat. It feels like someone stole my turbo. Alright maybe its not that bad but you get the point LOL

I overran the evo 560's at 21 psi with some 110 in the tank. Hit 110% inj. duty cycles. Some of it was tuning, but yes it's possible to overrun them with the 14b.

On another note, my transfer case seized up today. Fortunately I wasn't flying down the road, I had slowed to a slight crawl and started feeling like it was jerking, then it sudddenly just stopped and wouldn't even move. Crawled under, it appears that my seal wore out and all my fluid leaked out. Got home on a flatbed. Pulled the T-case out and there is a nice crack down the side and it's dry inside. Fluid was fresh approximately a thousand miles ago and what is left is seriously dark brown (redline shockproof). Fortunately I have a spare one laying around but I'm ordering all new seals first. Drained the trans too just in case but the fluid looks as good as the day I poured it in a year ago.

Sorry to hear man. However, why are you running Redline? Redline is like water. It sucks. I run standard off the shelf 75-90 or if anything BG.

Talk about losing motivation! Last week it rained, so I figured I'd hit the track this Friday. Perfect weather. Check Atco's schedule today and there's an event Fri-Sun. So it looks like I'll be waiting another week to run.

This following pics should answer some above questions and at the same time reinforce the fact that I will not run this year:
