tach stopped working

okay so my car is actually running good. has some boost leaks so the idle is off but it was idling and then the needle just fell to zero. every once in a while it starts back while i'm driving it. I did some research and the info i've seen is the CAS and the power transistor. i've messed with both of these and nothing has made it start working consistently. also the threads i've seen have been for 2g's, is there anything different about the 1990? Any help is appreciated guys, this is one of the last things i need to get this car really running good.

Did you try taking the cluster out and cleaning the connections? One could have simply jarred loose.

no i did not, it had been working fine and it didn't happen after a bump or anything like that. it sorta just quit but i will try that

Specifically the '90 DSM's get their tach signal from a special noise filter, basically a simple resistor inline with a capacitor, odds are its probably going bad or you've got a loose connection. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/147266-1990-tsi-tach-question.html

this noise filter, what does it look like? I don't remember a box on the back of the intake manifold right off the top of my head but i had to have one or my tach wouldn't be working I guess.
