Stock Exhaust Emissions

I have a 1991 Eagle Talon Auto FWD n/t, my smog numbers are super close to passing but i was wondering if anyone knew what that cylinder-like piece in the exhaust was installed right after the cat, and before the exhaust tip. Mine is missing and was thinking about finding an exhaust with that cylinder in it at the junk yard to pass smog Legally Can someone help me out? i cant even find pictures on google

So that maybe 8 inch cylinder is just for sound? doesnt work anything like the catalytic converter? and should i be able to see straight through my cat? its nonturbo FWD, keep in mind

Sounds like with that last post..someone hollowed out the cat..Which may be causing you not to pass smog..

You should not be able to see through the cat....Lets say you can stick a rod through there..That should not happen..

A CAT looks like a beehive inside of it, definitely should not be able to see through it.

i swapped the O2 censor wich helped, and then the EGR valve so its suuper close to passing. i havent chopped my exhaust off yet to see if its hallow or not cuse i didnt want to waste money buying that piece with the cylinder in it for sound. P.S. 2 tickets draw the line, i need change exhaust is too loud

Do you mean a resonator or a catalytic converter?

my bro had a hallow one for his 240 and tried saying it was like filter lining inside the hallow piece haha but still, im almost passing smog and some "50 years experience" guy said it sounded hallow. so that cylinder wouldnt change anything? my exhaust is fully welded BTW, only the headers are bolted

ive seen it on most cars at ecology, it has a Mitsubishi symbol on it n everything. i cant seem to find any stock under views of a car

and isnt a resonator the exhaust tip? no i have a magnaflow tip

The cat is a filter..It's a filter filled with precious metals, that remove bad stuff from the exhaust gasses before entering the air..

You can actually make a "test pipe" and get money back..From selling the cat..

Hallowing it out is just the cheapest way to get a high flow cat...

A resonator is NOT a tip, it is in the piping to RESONATE the exhaust gas, thus quieting down the exhaust.
Your talking about a muffler which is the tip of the end of the exhaust.

Your probably talking about a catalytic converter.
$300 from the dealership, and a SMOG station will not pass the cars visual inspection if it's welded.

my brother said it sounds like a test pipe, but what he was talking about is its hallow with the inner walls of it were like filtered metal, as in you can see through haha. so still, nobody know exactly what that cylinder like part is? ive seen it on every other car out there

they didnt seem to mind the fully welded cat end magnaflow exhaust tip. can u post a pic or a resonator then? sounds like thats what that is and why my cars too loud

Or just ask your brother to tell you what the "cylinder" is called.

so the bubble in most exhausts pipes, after the cat of course, is just a resonator for sound correct? the taper part. that cylinder i was talking about is probably just the stock version of that. it ugly looking. and the muffler would be the exhaust tip built in stock, but i have the magnaflow so that resonator should help right?



scratch all that... a test pipe is a hallowed out cat? cus im thinking thats what i have, a magnaflow exhaust tip without a resonator, and test pipe

maybe if you take a pic, so we can see what this cylinder thing you are talking about.
a test pipe is basically just a regular pipe where your cat should be. a hallowed out cat is a catalytic converter just emptied out inside to pass visual inspection, but i guess you can say that yours is a test pipe also because it is hallowed out. if your having trouble passing smog, i suggest you ask someone other than your brother for help.
