canada,
All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Thanks

So my car died while I was driving about two weeks ago. The fuel pump had went. I put in a new fuel pump and it works. I have fuel to the rail, I have spark on all 4 cylinders, and my timing is all good. I have checked all the fuses I could find and one was blown, which I replaced but that didn't fix anything. So my engine floods with fuel and cranks over but dies without really starting.

Well an engine needs fuel, spark, air, and compression so it must be one of them. Test for each. Did you actually pull all the spark plugs, clamp them against the head with cable connected, turn over and see adequate spark? If your CAS isn't working you'll get spark on only two (or even none). Did you work on or have anything else besides the fp?

I properly checked all four plugs. If my CAS was busted wouldn't the car fire up for a few seconds then die out? Only thing I worked on was the fuel pump. Before that I had changed my water pump but the car had been running fine for about four or five days before it died.

CAS controls injector timing, fuel pump, and which cylinder pair gets the spark. CPS controls when spark happens. Did you make sure the cams are rotating (timing belt didn't break/slip)? Maybe time to check compression. Is this the 97 GST?

You got 0.13v on blue/red on the harness side of the CAS connector when it's disconnected with key on (and your meter's negative attached to engine/body ground)? If so, that should be 4.8v to 5.2v which comes from the ECU and then points to the ECU being bad. Open up the ECU and check for blown a capacitor (rotten egg smell) and burnt/broken foil traces, etc. If you have another ECU try swapping it in to see effect.

if you sprayed starter fluid and it fired over for a few second then that would me you not getting fuel to your cyclinders or not enough pressure behind the fuel i would check pressure at the rail and maybe the pressure reg

Ya checking the fuel pressure regulator to maintain pressure for hours after engine is turned off is a good idea. If leaking, there will not be enough pressure in the rail even if pump provides fuel there.

Also check ECU connector pins for damage (bent, corroded, not locked in place, etc). If you could try another 2g turbo ECU from a friend (any 2g year), that would really eliminate the ECO. But with 0.13VDC on CAS signal line that really points to the ECU (or a short in the wire from CAS to ECU). Sounds like you may be sending the ECU in for repair.

did you change the filter too? it could've sucked up dirt when your pump went and is letting fuel through but not enough to keep it running and maintain adequate fuel pressure. Just a thought. I saw you said you changed the pump but haven't mentioned the filter which concerns me.

I have the same exact issue at this very moment LOL. Someone told me to remove the fuel line going to the fuel rail and see if the fuel is clean to begin with. Have the fuel line pointed towards the tranny and get a bottle to connect to the fuel line, crank the car to see what the color of the fuel is. Mine came out a piss yellow so my guess would be to see if you need new filters.

Hey guys.

Just dropped my 95 tsi engine into a 97 GST roller. Just got everything put back together, but the car won't start. Put the key in, turned it, and nothing. No clicks, no nothing.

Any advice would be great.
