I have a 1995 GSX I just rebuilt/ put a new engine in it. I bought the car with a thrown rod. I got a donner engine out of a 97 talon turbo with a crank walk.
I got new pistons, gaskets, crank, bearings, plugs, and balance shaft eliminator. The previous owner rebuilt it then threw a rod within 100 miles.
Interesting things: I used the head from the other engine because I couldn't be sure the piston from the GSX never bent any valves. The Talon's head use a different cam position sensor so I swapped cams and now the original GSX cams are back in the GSX.
PROBLEM: It seems as if it tries to fire up but won't. If I spray starting fluid it will fire up and run pretty decent till the starting fluid runs out. I thought it may be injectors so I took them off and cleaned them with carb cleaner then replaced the O-ring thingys that connect them to the head. Still won't start. So I checked the fuel pressure. It was getting like 44psi (or somewhere in that range) it would hold good pressure while cranking and all that good stuff. When I had the injectors off I kept them hooked to the fuel rail while cranking it. My friend said each one was squirting fuel. I also checked compression and it was right where it should be for a freshly rebuilt engine. Because I had the Talon, I swapped out the computers and no change at all. Still wouldn't fire without starting fluid. Any Ideas?

I've been holding off posting this because there are several kinda like it already on here, but no problems are quite like mine. I'm getting sick of messing with it. I can take pics, or give you voltages or resistances of anything you need.

Solution
AH HAH I figured it out. All this while the temperature sensor on the coolent was unhooked.
We hooked it up to my friends scan tool and the coolent temp was like -40 degrees. Hooked that up and it fired up slick as you please. It still didn't run perfect as the throttle position sensor seems messed up. Unhooked the TPS and it ran a lot better.
From now on I can tackle the usual little problems.
what cas is on there the 1g one? How are you plug wires, thats what mine did.

Also, if your using the 1g cas, you need to swap the wires in the ecu. Then the firing order will stay the same, match each plug to the cylinder and check the timing to see if it matchs up. DONT USE STARTER FLUID, thats a no no for a turbo engine.

Yeah, NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER use starting fluid period. You can make the engine dependant on it of you use it too often. Even if you don't use it often, don't use it at all.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not sure I understand how the engine can start to depend on starting fluid. But I won't use it anymore if it's bad on the turbo. Oh and I unhook the battery after every day I work on it (I don't know the history of the car, perhaps it has a drain on the battery somewhere. I unhook it just in case).
I can't find any clear pictures showing how to time the engine. I'll take pics of what I did.
I don't know if myne is a 1g or 2g but my car is a 95 and it is a 7bolt flywheel. I'll take a pic of the CAS. It's on the passinger side. The CAS from the 97 tallon was on the drivers side by the timing belt gears.

okay you got the right cas, check the timing now. is it 5 degrees, on tdc? Check engine codes? Plugs gapped correctly? Plug wires in the correct firing order? If not change 1 to 4 and 2 to 3 and try it again.

If you've got a CAS on the passenger side (1g or '97-'99 CAS), where as the OE '95-'96 CAS is located on the driverside of the engine. Since you aren't using the '95-'96 CAS but still using a '95-'96 ECU you need to swap spark plug wires.

u said it ran off of starting fluid.. granted i agree with not using starter fluid.. if it starts and runs.. u have fuel pressure, spark, all that stuff.. u said u bought the car with a blown rod?. Was the vehicle sitting for awhile?.. U probably have bad fuel..

Ok guys, thanks for all the tips. I'll check the timing with a light. I'll set the wire order to your suggestion. And I probably did have bad fuel, but I just put 5 gallons of premium in it.

I've got school and cheer tonight, but I'll be able to take a look at the car tomorrow and tell you what all has happened.

And how do I check to make sure the CAS isn't 180 off?

i have the same problem.i have fuel and spark it just wont start.it cranks and cranks.im hoping you can solve yours because im stuck.i have try the plug swap double checked the tbelt.im not sure how to check the cas because mine is not adjustable.i also have link and has told when i disconnect my battery i might lost my tune??
