That guage cluster off an S2K, is dead sexy in a 2G DSM. Im thinking of pulling my OE guages, and going something one off, not like this exactly but with Autometer guages. Great work on that cluster.

It sounds like "closed" forums like dsmLink have more knowledgeable people
Yes, and no the reason why certain forums...forums"closed" to the general public like nabr seem to have more knowledgable people is because they can pick and choose who joins them, this is only when generalizing them, because we allow anyone to join, we have a lot of newbies, but closed forums lose out on people that are very smart, but they just post the facts, and thats it, they dont care about being noticed. I personaly think its better to have open forums because it allows for new information to be found, and for people to post up new things that they did to their cars, ect...Yeah sure we get a lot of repeatative questions, but they are noobs, and it keeps that stuff in our heads.

and ill bet you never looked at the VFAQ or the Tech section before.

Wow. This is pretty disappointing. I guess this is the direction the DSM community is headed in though. The closed-forum mentality is spreading and the information exchange is slowing down. More and more people are not sharing info on how to do mods for various reasons. It's too bad, as I always liked how helpful the DSM community was. Now everything is top secret and people don't want to help others because they think they're "spoon-feeding" them. It's becoming very clique-ish. Oh well, the good times and friendly people don't last forever I guess. Thankfully we still have some nice guys like Greg Collier still around willing to help everyone and not just keep the info to himself.

Nice install. Good work. Congrats on the achievement. Wish you'd share your experiences instead of teasing everyone though. That's what this forum is for - sharing experiences and helping others.

Not everyone agrees with my logic. I don't think my way is always "correct". I see things one way, some see it another. I just like helping ALL DSMers and I do my best to make this site reflect that. That's why I greatly admire and do all I can to help people like Greg Collier. He's the type of person that I'd like all members to emulate. He's friendly, helpful, takes his car racing, and shares his experiences freely with everyone, not just a chosen few. He doesn't play the whole top secret game that plagues the DSM world these days.

Keep all the info secret and the DSM community will dwindle. Get everyone involved and more ideas will flow from more people. Educate as many as you can and we'll all benefit. That's what I believe in. Others obviously disagree or don't care.

And it always bugged me how unhelpful some of the "experts" have been in the DSM world. There will always be the innovators in every automotive platform. If they don't want to share how they do something, oh well. It's their prerogative. But many people here are new to the DSM world, and unlike other sites, we don't shun them. They come here to learn. To make a blanket statement saying everyone here lacks actual thought is just ignorant. Do we spoon feed them? No, we just try and make info easier to find and we don't advocate ripping their head off. We're all in the DSM community together. Whether you choose to participate on a site that is invitation only or one that welcomes all, we're all still part of the same community. I'm so tired of this hateful attitude that is spreading across the DSM world (the whole "#### everyone else" mentality). It's all about the damn cars - or have some forgotten that? Is this how it's going to end up? Is everyone going to be telling everyone else to go make their own mistakes? Nice. I'll keep doing my best to clean up the mess made by that logic.

Thanks Chris for putting it into words.

this thread was pretty cool at first, now it only belongs in the non-existing Bragging Section.

i understand what you are saying. i am all for a helpful community and i have helped out many people before. i will gladly admit that dsmtuners has helped with many things and it would have been much more difficult to be where i am today without it. But i feel that this thread is different. This install is as cusotm as somethign could get. and i am sure 90% of this forum wouldnt know where to start with it, including myself. I find it irritating that people would get upset because the starter of the thread wont disclose everything it has taken to complete the install. he said numerous times that he is more than happy to anwser specific questions which is extrmely generous. But when people want everything layed out in front of them, that is too much.

*cough cough* Silent Bob *cough cough* ROFL (But not really, Ludachris gets more involved)

You know, I agree that sharing tuning information is great.... BUT this is not a PERFORMANCE enhancing project. It is an AESTHETIC mod with no other benefits I can see. So what if he doesn't want to share his hard work on something like that. A little bit of research on wiring diagrams and voltages on our own could net the same results. Good looks that set a car apart are supposed to be hard to achieve. Look at all the cars running the same lame-ass body kits. It is the rare custom jobs that stand out and get noticed. If everyone had them it would be boring.

On a similar note though: I did freely share how I modified my front end. It was my choice to do though and I did think about not doing it. (Not that many people have asked and I did change it back.)

Kudos on the custom fab job. It looks great! :thumb:

EDIT: Oh yeah, and he is sharing, just not in blanket fashion.

I guess people here are just used to the idea of everyone doing write-ups and and sharing info, as we encourage everyone to do so. That's probably why they're not quite sure why someone would be against doing a write-up. Most people on our site are nice enough to share their info. They're probably angry because they feel like they'd do one if they were in his shoes.

And Nick, I can agree with you on wanting to be different than everyone else from a cosmetic standpoint and not wanting everyone to have everyone doing something that sets you apart. But he even stated that he lives in a place where there are few DSMs. It doesn't sound like that's the issue. He stated he'd do a write-up in other closed-forums but not here, which goes along with that whole "the info is ours and we don't want to share it" mentality. Whatever, it's pointless to keep talking about it. Some people are friendly and will share their experiences with everyone and others will keep things to themselves. All I can do is keep encouraging friendly, helpful attitudes. It won't rub off on everyone.

I do a little bit of custom fab work here and there and I'd happily share anything I do with anyone else in the DSM community. But that's just me.

OP! Looks very slick. I like the clean install, although I hope your engine is good to go to 9000rpm because, were I in your shoes, that tach would have me just itching to light that entire bar up just to see if I could do it.

The "This is for private forums" comment was a bit on the low-brow side if you ask me, though. I mean come on, bro. You needed to come up with the right inputs and perhaps address some voltage issues here and there, but aside from the fabrication (which was no doubt the easy part), I bet the bulk of the information could be found by tracing and testing leads in the factory harness. No doubt in my mind this wasn't an intricate project, but maybe it would have been a bit more sly to say something like, "I'd like to enjoy being the only one with this project for a little while. Wait a bit and I'll see what I can do." Would definitely save you some face, although I'm not losing any sleep over your decision to keep things on the low. Just be ready to have someone link you back to this thread should you ask for help in the future. You've pretty much forced yourself to search for everything from now on. No worries, though. I'm sure you already use the search more than most people.

As for everyone else pissing and moaning that this guy isn't spoon-feeding you the step by step instructions on how to do this, what's stopping you from doing something similar yourself? Focus less on the details not being provided to you verbatim and more on the fact that this can be done and start trying to crack the code. What issues did he come into? What does the S2K cluster need in the way of signals? How are those signals set up? Does the DSM provide the same signals? Where do they come from? How would you connect the new cluster to your DSM?

Look at the big picture for reassurance that clever shit like this is still possible with your car, but break it down into smaller, more easily figured out parts, to make it happen for you. The information is out there... you just need to know where to look for it and want to put in the effort to do the project.

I like Brian's perspective. If this guy doesn't want to post a write-up for whatever reason, let's invite others who plan on doing something similar to share their experiences/knowledge on the subject for others who would like some info on how to get started. If anyone has done a similar project, please do reply with information the rest of us "common-folk" might benefit from. Those who don't feel like helping out, you're obviously not obligated.

what you are asking is for those "details" he said he would post instead of the full write up

I have yet to see them

Guys i did spend a lot of time doing this,

I love it that people want a writeup, main reason im not posting a writeup on here directly is because many of my questions on this forum went unanswered when i was trying to do this. While the people from dsmlink actually helped me out,

Understand?

Steven

You asked one question on here about 5v power sources and your question was answered by Steve. So go ahead and show me the links to the questions you asked on here that went unanswered.

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=233354

This is all I could find, it seems pretty clear that your question was answered. If the answer wasn't satisfactory you could've come back and asked Steve for more help.

Another thing to consider is that every post on the Dsmlink forums gets read by almost every member, so at some point a person with knowledge on the subject will chime in. On here there are so many posts everyday that it's almost impossible to keep up with all of them.

Honestly u guys are pretty funny!

As for signals, the only one that is at all usable is the fuel level signal. Everything else needs converters.

Some help to those needing it, look at dscustoms.com, modifry, dont use the ecu 5 v source built your own converter.

Good luck,

Its not that hard or was it?

Steven

We're not trying to be funny. What I think is funny is how you lied about having unanswered questions on this forum and you got caught in the lie. I bet if you release the details of this on the Dsmlink forum like you planned to do, it will make it's way over here anyway. So why don't you just be a nice guy and post the writeup here as well.

I come to this site to learn about DSMs and teach others what I know about DSMs. I don't get on to look at pretty cars and pretty gauges. This is how about 98% of us view this site. (btw 42.7% of all statistics are made up) So I guess just let this be a lesson to you. Next time you decide to post a custom job, expect a small right up, nothing fancy just some tips and stuff that helped you get through it. And if it needs to be said again, you did a really good job, it looks great and don't get mad, just live and learn.

Man are you an idiot? Honestly your a real class act! Youve got a lot to learn in terms of people skills.

And so do you if you have the nerve to insult a wiseman and helpful contributing member of this site.

I'm so sick of these people who keep things "secret". Unless you own a business that will lose money if confidential trade secrets are released or you are involved in a race team that depends on those secrets to win races, there's absolutely no reason to keep things secret. The DSM community has a large number of people these days who don't share their experiences because they don't want to make things "public". In some situations I can see that making sense for the "carshow" guys who want to keep their car looking different. But as far as tech knowledge goes, it's ####ing ridiculous. Keeping tech knowledge secret does nothing to advance our community. It's selfish and dishonorable. All it does is show how important you are trying to make yourself (and your clique) and what an asshole you are. And it seems the DSM community is breeding assholes faster than we can breed friendly, honorable members. People are finding more reasons NOT to help others in our community and it's getting ridiculous. This is a damn hobby, we're enthusiasts, we're supposed to band together and help eachother as much as we can. Look at other enthusiast groups for other vehicle platforms - it seems we're the only group suffering from this nonsense.

Steven, though you say you didn't receive any help in this forum, you did receive replies. Which means people attempted to help you. Just because the right person who knew the answers didn't see your thread is no reason to display the attitude you're displaying. Hopefully you'll learn that your reasoning for not posting a write-up really sucks. It plays into the whole idea that information should not be shared with everyone. Using your logic, the VFAQ and our own Tech Articles should be private. I guess that's the cool thing to do these days though.

No. Nobody could re-duplicate that, they could try but it wouldn't come out to look the exact same way. And yes, I'll just go ahead and say, if you're not gonna give tips don't post in the bolt-on tech of all places. If you really, really want to show off what you did but don't want to tell anybody how you did it then post in the Hangout section at least.

Oh man. Come on, dude. What details? Do you want wire length measurements? A template to cut the carbon fiber, perhaps? It's a goddamned speedometer and tach. It's not rocket science!

Are people honestly trying to say that nowhere in all the public DSM forums on the internet, can a DSMer find out what wire goes from the sensor on the transmission to the ECU and then to the dashboard and what signal travels down that line? If the turbo cars are still running that archaic mechanical speedo set up, nobody has any clues on how to get a digital signal to transmit the speed of the car at all?

You guys can find a tach signal, can't you? The OP has already offered up that you're going to have to build your own convertors and even where to source said convertors (or parts to build them). That, right there, is a significant step in the right direction.

If I were interested in this mod, knowing what I know now, I'd be out there searching some Honda forums for information on this gauge cluster. If this is something you really want to do, YOU need to get out there and do some research. We should all be in this together to advance the platform, which will benefit us all, but some of us get tired of busting our asses to figure something out, living in a solder smoke haze for hours at a time trying to make something work that was never intended to work and then we're expected to be sure and document every step of the way so other people can just do it without any trouble? I bet that, even if m3whatever did post a detailed write-up listing every step of the process, there would be people bitching because he didn't include pictures.

There are two cancers eating away at the DSM community these days: One is people in private forums and thinking themselves better than everyone else. The other is callous sloth among people who seek to reap all the benefits without having to put forth any personal effort beyond clicking "Post." Personally, I find the latter to be more annoying.

There is nothing - no lack of details, no lack of quality information, no hidden technical resources - nothing keeping any DSMer from accomplishing ANYTHING. You want a S2000 instrument cluster in your car, buy the cluster and start troubleshooting. If you want your 2G to literally fly, you can do it if you just want it badly enough.

This post is not directed towards any one person, but more as a general wake up call to all of the people out there who want to just come on the boards and take. Many of you have been around long enough to know what's up. This is your chance to shine. Get out there and make something happen. If you want people to share details on projects like this, then get your happy asses out to the garage, complete something custom, doesn't matter how involved it is, and then share the details with others. People who come up with cool new shit and then share it with everyone are really cool and the more people we have like that over here, the more we all benefit.

/end rant of a crazy, all motor 2GNT owner who gives a shit

I think he's trying to keep his custom mod unique. It would be whored out.

Are you guys saying if you do something 1-off and don't post a how to, you shouldn't post it at all? That's silly.
Re-read all of my replies and you'll get a better idea of what we're saying.

If he just wanted to keep his mod unique he could have just said so. But he gave a different reason. And he then followed that up with saying he might do a write-up only for a "closed forum" but not our public forum. That tells us he's not trying to keep the install unique. He just doesn't want to help the general DSM community (or maybe more specifically our community), only certain cliques within the DSM community.

Brian, I can agree with you. We need more people to go out and take it upon themselves to create new innovations. Nobody is arguing that point and I think everyone here can agree with that. What most people here are saying is that, if you go out and do something why not post a write-up to make it easier for the next guy? That's why the VFAQ was built. That's why we have a Tech Guide/DIY section here on this site. That's one of the main reasons why we built this site. To share experiences and help others benefit from our knowledge. We can't build resources and then get mad because certain people are using them. The resources are there for all to benefit from. By educating everyone as much as we can we ensure that more people will get involved and more innovations are created.

In any event, I don't see the point of this thread anymore. The guy got to show off his installation and won't answer many questions about it here in this thread. If there is going to be no information about how to do this mod in this thread, it's not really a tech-related, thus it's in the wrong forum. It's better suited for the Hangout. Thread moved.
