Well, after putting some white-out on the tbelt where the groove is, after about 200 miles it gets worn away meaning whatever put that groove into the belt is still touching it. It took about 12k miles to get a groove worn about 1/8th of an inch deep. The steel threads are "just" starting to show through. Obviously its time to change the tbelt. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of anything like this. It has to be something barely touching the belt to make it worn like that. Theres never any smell and the groove is no hotter (from friction) than any other spot. Should I do a full tbelt change and replace EVERYTHING or just the belt itself since everything was done 12k ago?

Oh yeah, is there anything else performance wise that I should do while i'm in there?

make sure the 2 oil pan bolts directly below the crank pulley are the correct size. this happened to my car where the bolt was too long and was rubbing on the timing belt.

I had the same issue. Swapped the bolt out for a shorter one and replaced the belt... No more problems! My belt looked exactly like that. BTW, all those belt shavings end up all over the place you will want to hose it down with some brake cleaner.

There are actually TWO oil pan bolts that are shorter than the rest. The one that is under the crank pulley (it's actually a bit towards the firewall side of the pulley) is the one that probably caused this.

Driving it would be risky. It may hold up for a while but you would be gambling your motor on that. IMO, change it before driving the car anymore.

I don't think its the oil pan bolts.... I can only see one being the issue.
But to be safe, I did add a washer to the one bolt shown in the picture after the picture was taken. Now its flush with the oil pump. The other bolt near the drain plug doesn't even come through the oil pump....

ok i think i know what it is. i had the same problem.
the belt wears on the tensioner arm between the pulley and the bolt holding it to the block, take a grinder and smoothed it out, when you pull off the arm you will see exactly where you need to grind.

yes, you'll need to remove atleast 2 mounts in this process.. the front center one attaching to the crossmember, and theres one in the back of that too, but only the front one and passenger side should be needed to be removed for this. Before you do this. make sure you have the engine's weight supported, by an engine lift. You can't push it by the pan since this is what you want to remove.

If the engine isn't supported, you may have an engine in the face when u go for the crossmember. IF the passenger side mount is disconected first.

this is just to jack up the motor for more clearance while removing the pan. Some people haven't had to remove anything but the cross-member,transfercase, and then the pan. I guess they had lifts?

I have yet to do this personally with my 420a 95 na

not sure if i missed it or not, but I am going to just buy a couple new bolts for the shorter ones to make sure I have the right ones. anybody know the correct size for those two bolts?

I thought I dropped a bolt behind the timing cover, then after taking the upper cover on I see a mark all the way around. Fearing the bolt had dropped into the timing cover,I've taken both pulleys and all the bolts out so I can fish out the bolt. It looks like one of my oil pan bolts is a little longer than necessary because it fits perfectly into the grove, and not a lost bolt. I'm going to grind the bolt down,so it doesn't happen more. Timing belt was replaced 2 yrs ago when I had the head rebuilt. The groove is slight, can't be seen from the underneath and doesn't at all go through, that I can see. It rubbed off the lettering that is imprinted on the belt. Who knows how long I have already drove it this way.

Edit:Forgot to add my question...does this need to be changed immediately?

You used the wrong bolt on the pan. The belt must be replaced now. As in today.

The bolts were never changed by me. It has been like that since I bought the car(an extreme amount of silicone was used, even on the bolts). You would have thought that my mechanic would have noticed that bolt while replacing my belt and rebuilding the head, guess not.

I called my mechanic,he said to bring it in later this week. Possibly he might be able to get the belt warrantied, but if not I don't care,as long as it gets replaced. Good thing out of this,I learned how to take my pulleys off. Oh,and not to drop bolts into the timing cover! I'm not one to mess with timing belts, yet.

Yes i had the same problem i used a shorter bolt in that area, on my freshly built engine, i rode mine a while before i had a issue with the pulleys. So this time i corrected that problem with a new belt and shorter bolts.

Your mechanic owes you a belt job. Go ahead and do the waterpump and tensioners at the same time.

i searched over the forums and I couldn't find what i was looking for. If I missed it I'm sorry. Do you guys think its the oil pan bolts. (See picture below)

If this was asked before please feel free to move this thread to the grave yard. I couldn't find a picture that is why I started a thread.

Thank you in advance for any help.

This looks like a classic example of some form of debris falling down inside the timing belt cover. Have you been driving around with the upper timing cover off? Time to pull the lower cover and inspect, you'll probably find something (small bolt likely) sitting at the bottom.

The oil pan bolts are toward the inside of the belt, where you have no damage. The bottom of an oil pan bolt will only leave a narrow line. The belt is still intact, and you didn't skip any teeth? If so, consider yourself lucky.

the belt has been on for about four months. I just took off the timing belt cover like two days ago because i heard a sound coming from the timing belt and thats what i found. It hasnt skipped any teeth or anything like that it still runs great.
