Replaced rear seats with RX7 storage bins [Merged 6-7] rear seat delete

I was wondering if anyone has any pics of backseat removed, but had a custom carpeting job done?? The seats are pretty much worthless if the driver is over 5'10 anyways. I was thinking about eliminating borth or maybe kepping one just in case someone needs a ride. What was the weight loss?? Thanks, Kyle :thumb:

Well if you are planning to eliminate the backseat to accomidate a 2nd engine, then it's okay :p

I removed mine and did a "custom" Wal-Mart carpeting job, which is only temporary as I am about to get all of the carpet redone in black. And it's true, it is the easiest thing to remove next to floor mats. Unfortunately they hardly weigh anything. The spare tire weighs about twice as much. But for us tall people, they are just a waste of space.

Here's some pics of mine. Total cost to do, including all carpeting and glue, about $8.

this is my mess, amp and stuff is underneath it all... gives me a place to put my small tool bag too... kinda thinking about putting the battery underneath the one side, but yea.... i did it mainly to have space for the sub, without killing my whole hatch area.... plus im 6'4 so no one was gona be riding in the back... the sub is bolted down where the seatbelts were, so its not going ANYWHERE.... nice and solid...

Awesome replies guys! Sorry about where I put the thread. Did you guys remove all the rear seat belt stuff too? I'm 6'2 so I don't see anyone in my back seat anytime soon. The pics all look like what I want to do, I have a 1g but it gave me a good idea. Thanks guys!

in my 2g I took out the back seat backs, bottom seatbelt assembly and sparetire crap. all in all I lost 114 pounds. I felt bit of difference, mostly in the traction department as it was my old gst. But it wasnt worth loosing two seats....

I have mine removed in my 1g, and I love it. The seats were useless, and I am going to build it, using really thin wood, into a platform straight back so it looks all flat to the trunk, and then put two locking pop-up doors for storage underneath. It will be more functional and look 100x better.
Plus with no backseats, no giving a bunch of people rides :D

bigemrich, that is almost exactly what I was thinking of doing. Making it one big trunk, but I like the locking storage idea, I'll have to look into that :thumb: With the extra room I was also thinking about doing the battery relocate as well.

2g but you get the idea. There are more pics in my gallery if you're interested.

I'd love to but there is no way I can get rid of mine. My girlfriend like the "spontaneous lovin'" :D

hey i have a couple q's im going to strip my car in the next month or 2 for "race" reasons..

Im going to also put a cell in w/ cage ect... now in the rear of a 1g tsi or gsx there is the horrable hump which im going to remove and install sheet metal into.. but on the left and right on the "hump" there are 2 1x1 square tubes on each side of the hump.. so my question is this do i remove these or are the critical to the structural intergerty of the car??

i know its not related but i have been woundering for a while.. ne info is appricaited..

I Really like that fiber glass work, thats an awesome incloser. Wouldn't it be easier for the "spontaneous lovin" w/o the backseat  I'm really suprised how many people have done this. As for the tubes... I'm pretty sure your going to want to keep those. The reason we have the spare tire hump and fwd's don't is because we have extra needed rear suspension supports. But that is what I have heard, it is your choice. I would search around and see is you can find some more info before you cut apart the rear braces.

That is definitely what I am going to try and do. I'm going to start looking for the 2g rx7 bins right away :thumb:

he reason the hump is htere is because of the gas tank accually.. and i plan to remove that and put a fuel cell thre.. the reason the gst's do not have the hump is because their gas tank is where a awd's rear diff is,, i know cutting those may be a no no but when i looked at other threads of people installing fuel cell's i didnt see any mention of them. which is why im curious..

so thanks for the imput.. any more?

If you're talking about the goldish 1" x 1" square tubes, those are just there to hold up the floor boards and can be removed. If you're talking about something else, I don't know and I'm too lazy to go look. ;)

Oh, I was totally confused. Yeah those gold tubes around the tire hump are just to hold up the rear carpet board things, I have mine out and they don't do anything, no problems :thumb:

Theres a couple pictures of my rear deck cover mid-way down the page. Its out now because i got tired of not having access to the rear seats.
