drive up to manitowoc... ill carpet it for ya.

will carpeting be that hard?

i figured i could do it myself....

i know i can do the headliner myself thoug... or at least i think i can.

well you can do it nice and lay a flat board down and carpet that...
or you can just carpet the metal...

i do alot of stereos and stuff....

or we could do a full fiberglass rear end from the driver/pass seat back :)

do like 2 10" W7s.... :)

It is easy. What I WAS going to do was take mine out and cut a piece of thin wood to lay over the back where the wood was. Use cardboard first to get the exact demensions so you dont mess up the wood sheet. Then just go to Menards or wherever and get some carpet. Menards has Porsche black (here they do at least). It looks really good and that is what I used on my false floor for the hatch area. The wood layed down would look a lot better then just carpeting the seat area alone. Good luck Jason!

somebody needs to write a tech article about removing the back seats. This will help every one who has the question.

You will be looking for these small clips on a 2nd gen and there located on the left side and the right side of the seat actually.

The 2nd clip is hidden in this pic because of the paper in the way but you should get the idea.

Ok, I've searched the forums and some of the galleries and I can't find much.

I'm thinking about taking the rear seats out of my 2g DSM. Will it look OK if I just carpet over the metal? Or, has anyone done something unique with all that space? If so, post pics please. :) Thanks.

Hmm, maybe have some sorta custom sub box built on top of the metal frame with the speakers facing up, making everything flow nicely. Carpet it with something nice, ohh.. maybe have a long window built within the box, and have some strobs.. or just a plain glow light coming from it.

Hmm...ok let me rephrase this question. Any ideas that require medium work and little money?

Simple, Cheap, Quick, I got this.

This was so damn simple it isn't funny. All you need is a big sheet of cardbord. Sit down in the back, and keep trimming the cardboard down with a box cutter until it fits just right around the panels on the sides. Trace this template onto a sheet of plywood, and cut it out with a sawzall. Get 4 L brackets and find a place to bolt the plywood to the brace that sticks up between the 2 shock towers . Go ahead and bolt the L brackets to this brace, but remember to leave enough clearance for the top to be mounted flush with this brace. Now that the L brackets are in, lay the top piece you cut out down, and mark where to drill holes for the bolts to mount the top to the brackets. Be sure to get flat topped bolts when you bolt the top to the braces so they won't stick up under the carpet you will lay down later. Level the sheet to where you want it so its not crooked. Now brace it after its level and use another sheet of cardboard for a template from the top down to the floor and over the drive shaft tunnel. Once again trace and cut out on plywood.

Make several braces to hold it all together and stable. Where you put all these is up to you. I put mine of course where the top and front go together. I used a piece of wood about a 2x2 and used elmers woodglue then screwed the pieces together to make sure they held. I then did this from front to back in several places, and from side to side around the opening I cut out. This will ensure its strong and it won't flex or bow out/in.

You will want to cut out a hole so you can get to the bolts holding the top to the back brace, and to get to your fuel pump. To do this just measure and cut out the hole you want and put those 2x2 braces about half way out into the opening you cut so they will hold the piece you cut out in place. Also screw/glue a piece of 2x2 all across the underside of the piece you cut out to make sure it won't bow in/out or break when you put something on it.

Now go to wal-mart in the automotive section and by 2 rolls of their auto/marine carpet, color your choice, and some spray on adhesive. **BEFORE YOU TIE THE TOP AND FRONT TOGETHER CARPET IT OR ELSE YOU WILL HAVE A F****D UP SEAM WHERE THEY MEET** Lay out the top piece and spray the top liberaly with the adhesive. Do the same with the back side of the carpet you plan to use. Allow the adhesive to get tackey first. Now lay down the carpet on the top part of your box and allow the glue to dry for about 30 minutes to an hour depending on what kind of adhesive you bought. Cut off the excess carpet but be sure to leave about an inch to and inch and a half or carpet all around the outside and where your opening is so you can tuck it under and have it look good. On the back side of this top piece you will need to leave enough excess to tuck under the carpet that is in the very back covering your spare. You also don't want to spray around where the bolt holes you drilled are so you can put the bolts through when you are ready to install the whole assembled part.

Now that you are finished with the top part you need to do the front piece that is behind your seats. Take about 2 inches of carpet and fold it over the top to the back of the front piece and glue it on. **This is to ensure you have a professional looking seam all the way across the front.** Make sure when you do this the carpet will be covering the whole front. Now before you spray adhesive on the rest of the front piece screw your front and top together. Make sure it is level all the way across. Now that the front and top are screwed in together spray adhesive on the back of the carpet and on the front. Lay down the carpet straight and cut it out remembering to leave excess to fold around the edges.

Now that you have the front and top screwed together you need to put it in the car. I took my seats out so it would be easier to put in. Line up your bolt holes you made with the holes in the brackets and put the bolts through with large washers on both sides. I used to washers to ensure the bolts down work their way through their holes i drilled. Tighten down nuts to the bolts from the underside and if you measured correctly it should fit like a glove and have that professional install look. All you need to do now is fold the excess carpet over the bolts and back under the carpet that is already in the hatch.

***Remember the more time you spend making sure everything is perfectly level, straight, flush, ect ect... the better it will look.***

I hope this helped you out and you could understand my directions. I've been told several times directions to anything I give are hard to follow but I tried to make sure I said everything. Later, Tait :thumb:

**EDIT** I forgot to say I've had this in for about a year, and it has worked perfect. I've been to several parties where I knew I couldn't leave so I've slept, of had other business to attend to ;) , in the back on this enclosure, and never have I have a problem with it. I've also helped move stuff like boxes, and nothing has come loose or cracked yet.

I was looking to do a fiberglass replacement with a Nitrous Bottel, maybe a PS2 on one side and an amp on the other... but thats a lot of work.

I like what Dudeman did, I hate back seats... its not like anyone taller then a midget fits back there anyway

These 2 were giving me ideas (aside from the color scheme)

Yeah, I was thinking about curving it though than just making it straight all the way around. Yeah LOL, people are all crammed in there and then when you're about to go over a bump you all have to say, "Watch your head." I'd rather just have 2 seats and not have to deal with more than 1 person.

Ok i have a 2g i have removed what little back seat they have and placed a custom sub box there to take full atvantage of the space and not lessen my cargo space here is a pic

Here's a pic of a cheap backseat mod I just did. I got my back seats out and wanted to make it look good so for $7.99 at the Zone, I think I accomplished that. Plan to buy a racing harness for the driver's side and have it bolt into the backseat bolts at a 45 degree angle to give it a racey look. This will bolt in under the carpet. If anyone has a harness recommendation, hook me up. I'll probably go with Corbeau.

looks good. When do you think you're getting those seats/harnesses? i'd like to see some pics.

I don't really like my corbeau harnesses. They don't feel secure. My friend has Schroth harnesses and they are a pain in the ass to adjust... that's what you want. You won't loosen them as you move forward. :thumb:

What kind, and color paint is that. I have the back of my GST black like that and don't know what color to accent it with.
