Well a while back my black top cas started acting up and then stopped working around 1 am in the morning and luckily I had my spare greentop cas and a timing light in my car. Lmfao An Hour later I had spark and drove home.
Fast forward 2 years and I found it in a box and decided to take a gander inside it.

I know the pin has to be pressed out but other than that what goes bad in these things ? I'd much rather run the black top as it's a digital signal and more reliable compared to the ugly greentop .

I'd like to fix it I have new a new seal for it . Did oil get in and interfere with it? Anyone ever rebuild one?

I can feel where there's obviously magnets inside for the signal guessing it's works sorta like an abs or pulse generator . The trigger plate goes over the magnet and makes a signal.
Really hard to find a blacktop cas here in Winnipeg .

    Thanks. 15581934725828747373269352049316.jpg

    More reliable huh?
I have used the same green top for a decade with no issues.:sneaky:

Though I would prefer a black top myself for the accuracy, not the reliability.

I have a spare black top, but have had zero issues with my green tops at all.

As for what goes bad, my guess is the pickups? Usually is see them oil fouled from a bad seal. I've taken apart a couple and had one custom machined for a project, there's not much too them. Here's pics of the shaft, bearing and seal.

The early sensors aren’t magnetic, they’re optical.

From what I heard and found over the years, the black tops are susceptible to magnetic fields and electrical noise. It's been a while since I looked into it though.

As for changing up sensors, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Can definitely refurbish the optical, just be extremely careful with the trigger wheel and optical sensor, they're very fragile.

So there’s another seal besides the oring? I replaced my oring and it still leaks a little. It’s the only leak I have and my ocd wants it fixed. Do you have the part number for the seal, green top?

    Thanks!!

Yes there are 2 seals: the o-ring and lip seal on the shaft.
They are the same for green and black top from what I've disassembled. I dont have a p/n handy, but the pictures of the seal I posted are above in post #3 and you might be able to derive a number from that.

Edit: I think it's a 24mm OD, 14mm ID, 6mm thick double lip seal, but I'm not 100%, and not getting up RN to get calipers and dig around for a seal, haha.
Here's one option in that measurement.

It was only midnight for me, but my bed was more comfortable at that point haha.
Just to confirm, this measurements are the correct size for the seal (just grabbed the calipers to verify) :thumb:
