I picked up a T3 turbo off a 88 Saab 9000. Its a tbo356. I have been reading that it is supposed to be a water cooled only but it looks to have both the oil ports and the water ports. How do I tell if it is both oil and water cooled or just water? Any pics of a t3 install would help allot or maybe a trick to knowing which ports are to what.

I am also wondering what to expect when this goes on. Its .42 compressor side and .48 exhaust side. I plan to put it on a 9 to 1 motor with a front mount and a race ported head. I am hoping for some input on what kind of boost to run after the motor is broke in. I am going to run this setup somewhat stock until I gather the rest of my parts and install my stand alone system.

Those Saab turbo's are tiny. It would be a huge waste of your time to install that thing.

It is water cooled. The oil isnt really for cooling, its for lubricating and every turbo needs oil. As far as the size of the turbo, it is smaller than a 16g and would be a waste to install it. And how do you plan to go with a stage 5 exhaust? You do know that a stage 5 exhaust side is basically a p-trim turbine wheel, right? That would require a rebuild, new shaft and turbine, not just a turbine housing upgrade.

I had an agp stage 5 exhaust housing dropped in my lap and the turbo was on a trade so the only money I'll have in it is the turbine wheel and rebuild. I'm looking to autocross this thing and what to put a beefy but not to big turbo on it. I dont have the cash to buy a new turbo and dont want to pay the price for a used 16g to turn around and have it rebuilt so I know the turbo wont blow apart right away.

I see where your going with this but I get a good hook up on the rebuilds and the parts. My big thing is I want to go a different direction then just adding a 16g and I've found I can find parts for the garrett turbos easier than hunting for ever Mits parts for the big 16 or the 20g. Plus the garrett setup can be taken to full ball bearings and still use the same exhaust housingand exhaust manifold. I'd like to have it setup to do a quick change to a t4 for drag racing and this setup wuld cut out allot of part swapping later. Hope this makes more sense on why I'm going in this direction now.

just to let you know turbochargers.com has the e316g on sale right now for 459. i would have gotten one from them if i hadn't sourced out a local slightly better deal. you would be better off either buy a used 16g or a new one. the amount of fab work and rebuild costs are going to run about the same.
