Pull engine and transmission separately?

I'm rebuilding my 4g63. I need to remove the engine. I bought a factory service manual for my car and it says I have to take the transmission out before I take the engine out. Do I have to? Can I take the transmission and engine out at the same time? It seems like it would be a lot easier to take them out together. I have a 5 speed awd talon.

+2, take them out as a unit. That's the way I pulled mine and just getting ready to put it back in this weekend, as one unit with all the motor mounts removed from the bay so it should go back in relatively easy. (crossing fingers)

OK so sounds like I will be pulling 1 chunk out (and its awd, I mention that because I don't know how the transfer case plays into this). And removed all motor mounts? Is it just 2? I can see 1 at the top on drivers side and 1 under the intake.

i pulled my transfer case off first, not sure if it will hang up or not but it was easy enough to pull.

also mounts under the turbo and on the tranny

And your exhaust down pipe then the transfer case. That was easier for me. Drivers side intermediate shaft too. I pulled the complete front control arms with the axles left in the hubs also so I didn't have to remove them from the ball joints, which you could hurt. Its just some bolts that hold the control arms on and the axles will come out of the transmission but stay bolted to their hubs. Drivers side motor mount bolt and passenger side motor mount bolt, plus the front and rear roll stop bolts will all need removed but you don't have to remove the mounts from the car to get it out. Putting it back in, it looks easier to mount everything back up by having my frame mounts out of the way and then bolt them back up after the engine/transmission are in place. Just the way I am doing mine.

It's easy, once you get under there you will see its not difficult. It's harder to pull the axles than the t case. Good luck!
