I still consider myself a noob when it comes to "tuning". So I decided to make it an effort on my behalf to bypass certain suggestions from the Tech Guide. On my quest I went.

As some of you may know, I've indulged myself into using quite a few Evo parts on the DSM. Everything from intake and exhaust manifolds to rims and brakes to MAS and injectors to fuel pumps and FMICs to steering wheels and piston/rods. And a ton of shit in between. I have the Evo ECU swap on the back burner.

The 2G is out of comission at this point. You can view some of the aftermath, as well as my new DD, below.

I am also going to post up threads that I either started or added to with pictures.

I'm still in the process of converting some of this stuff over, obviously. But my main goal was to never touch an EMS.

Let me just get this out of the way for the newbies who want quick performance gains with little knowledge applied - utilizing the Evo MAS & injector combo with my 14B set in the low 20PSI range worked for me. You thought upgrading the 2G's UICP and CBV were nice bumps, wait till you take my route, if you so desire.

You obviously need other supporting upgrades to get the most out of your setup (such as an FMIC, fuel pump (rewired), exhaust, throttle body, boost leak test, MBC, etc) but I'm focusing on those three right now.

Here is my current modification list so you can make some notes.

Bolt-On Modifications

Extreme PSI intake, modified Forge Mazdaspeed pull-type CBV (FMMAZ3A) with 1G flange, customized Evo VIII FMIC (2.75x11.5x19.5) with 2.5 inch intercooler piping, 14B (ported), Evo VIII MAS, Evo VIII 560cc injectors, 1G 60mm TB, 2.5 inch TB elbow, Evo III Intake Manifold with Hondata gasket, Evo IX FP (rewired), Evo III O2 Housing (unported), RRE "Evo Style" long 2.5-to-3 inch DP, modified Thermal R&D (full 3 inch) piping with customized Vibrant Performance Super Stealth muffler, NGK BPR6ES spark plugs (.028-.029) & ME77 wires, custom grounding kit, SS -6AN feed line & AFPR feed line, 1G fuel rail, solid catch can w/ Husky filter, US Plastic Corporation check valve, FFWD EGR block-off plate, Evo VIII radiator cap (1.1 bar), no boost leaks =)

Engine Management
Digital Tuning OBD-II PocketLOGGER with Palm M100 PDA, Auto Meter boost/EGT/oil pressure gauges, Joe P MBC, Aeromotive 13301 AFPR, Marshall FP gauge

Engine Internals
ITM revised lash adjusters

I will refrain from posting up the Suspension and Drivetrain Mods just because they currently (in my case) have no real place in this discussion. (Technically they have as much right as any other section, but I'll not be discussing them here.)

Please notice that there is no significant engine management system in place that is noteworthy. And it'll stay that way, at least for the time being. Which is exactly my goal.

I would like to post up a quote I came across that fits nicely with what I'm trying to accomplish.

Local here ran 720s on 99 car with evo 8 maf. Car ran really well. made 335hp on the dyno at 20psi with a gt30r turbo setup. Engine was stock with fp1 cams. big e-bay intercooler 3 inch exhaust. wideband at 14.7 at idle and cruise. 13.7 at tip in/part throttle. 12.5 at part throttle excell. a little rich at WOT at 10/1. I was amazed it ran so well for no ecu tweaking..

This quote has given me confidence. Thus my current plans along with the rebuild of the 7-bolt will be the FFWD DKS 272 combo and 660cc injectors, as well as the Evo 3 turbine housing matched up with the Evo 3 exhaust manifold. Don't know if I'll touch the springs and valves yet. Will definitely have to consider upgrading the clutch after all these years. :coy:

What caused you to blow a hole threw your engine in the first place? Also you have gave me an idea to try this i know a local selling a evo8 mas for 50 bux i already have 660 just collecting dust on my dresser and a evo9 pump is the car. How is your rebuild going?

I was always under the impression that if you put in bigger injectors, then you would need some way to tune due to our ecu's being programmed to run 450's. I just put in a small 16g and I'm only currently running about 14 psi because I'm waiting to get my fuel pump, fpr, injectors and something like an safc...but if this combination works reliably I might just follow your lead. How well does...or did, the car run with no real way to tune?

I am also very interested in this mod. Recently picked up a virgin 2g awd for my wife that is auto. Would love to up the power while keeping tuning and drive ability as stock as possible. This option and religious maintenance on a low budget looks like a winner. Thank you for sharing.

10:1 is pig rich! They could have made more power.

Have you considered putting an evo8 ecu in without tuning? This would compliment your evo8 MAF and injectors very well with a stock tune and only a few wires changed plus you would have the option of tuning once you reached the point that you wanted to go farther.

Sorry these took so long to post up. Pulled the bi*** a couple months ago. Not as difficult as I originally thought.
