ah. Ok. I may have removed too much material but I'm hoping this will be the size of the t4 manifold I will be using. I have not touched the intake ports what so ever. The only ports I have touched were these kind: http://www.dprracing.com/prod&serv/Heads/Subaruheads/port5.jpg

The exhaust side, but before the valve. BUT I'm also far from the border of the gasket. I'll check out those other abrasives. The exhaust ports are now actually hell of alot more defined and smooth than the previous pictures I took. The hardest part is getting the finish those pro porters get. Since I'm obviously using the wrong tool LOL.

Ok I have been trying to port out my turbo but the bit im using dosnt seem to be doing much at all. Its just a metal grinding bit, not carbide or anything. can someone direct me to a good bit to use? also, what tool should I be using to port with?

A dremel works best. You can get good carbide bits from Dejon. They're cheap, too. Like $20 a bit, which is about half the price they sell them for locally around here. I used a dremel with a carbide bit to port mine out, and then a wire brush to clean it up and polish it.

An electric or air die grinder will make life easier. Trust me. I'd use that and get your hands on any carbide bit you can find. I did all my porting with one carbide bit and an air die grinder. Worked great. Dremel will take a while. I used one just to smooth things out a bit. Good luck!

DON'T try to use a dremel if you're taking any real amount of material off. Use an electric or air grinder and a cylinder-sphere-end, double-cut 1/2" or 5/8" carbide burr (Google "carbide burr" and you'll find 'em). I got an electric die grinder from Harbor Freight online for like $45, but that was because I don't have an air compressor. The air grinders are only like $20 at Home Depot or Lowes.

Here are some threads that talk about porting:

Good luck!:thumb:

Jibberish and Kenamond have got it.

With an air grinder and a carbide bit, I was able to port my 14b and O2 sensor housing in less than two hours, and that was the first time I had ported anything in my life. With a Dremel, I could see myself spending an easy four to five hours on it. The bits are just too small to take off any significant amount of material.

I bought a bunch of wheels but it didnt seem like i got the right ones because one of them took 2 mins for it to disapear and the other didnt look like it was doing much.
Is there a name for these?

Brad :)

I usually use a carbide bit for the dremel. I have two different kinds. Here's a link. Look at the tungsten carbide ones for porting.

What you want is a double-cut carbide bur that has a 1/4" shank so you can use it with a die grinder. When I ported my manifold and turbo hot side it took long enough with the die grinder, I don't even want to think how long it would have taken with a dremel.:D

I would buy one off eBay, but need one asap. I was told I could get a $20 one at walmart but when I went all I saw were about 10 different dremels and a black and deckerd dremel replica. Is there anyone name for it? Plenty of cordless drills, sanders, ect... no die grinders.

Searched home depot online, only found air ones.

Searched Lowes online, had one for $180+

Can find them on eBay for under 20 w/ attachments, would think some company chain would sell similar ones for similarly cheap prices?

I bought a black and blue one for $20.00 something that comes with a kit at walmart. Worked pretty well and I've had it for a while.

harbor freight, walmart, target, sears. If its a craftsman bought at sears, I believe its lifetime warranty if it breaks they replace it. I know its like that with handtools, dont know how it works with others.

I'm looking through ebay to look for a electric die grinder..

Which one is strong enough to port my manifold and o2 housing? One says 150w, 300w, 18v..IDK, I'm just new to this electric terms...

Here's the search results:

Oh also, I have a drill.. Can I just use the carbide bits in that instead of buying a die grinder?

Thanks:thumb:

I even got a dremel. Can I buy the carbide burr bits and put it in that or a drill?

I have a carbide burr and air die grinder, removing material seems much faster if I press the bit harder onto the housing, I tried not pressing hard, but and it takes forever just make a bunch of fine shavings. Am I doing it right?

I usually let the tool running at full speed (20,000 RPM @ 90 PSI) but it's consume super amonnt of air. I heard too slow will chip the carbide bit.
