The AL bearing is (Aluminum) they are a shiny silver color, and the P series bearings are the tri metal bearings that are grey in color.

Paul,
They have different stampings on the back.

It’s all messed up and, as usual, you can’t trust manufacturers too much. You have to go by what the manufacturers say their engine components are good for because there is no way you can tell which bearings are better. You might be able to take into consideration design features, consistency in size (the correct size) but how can you tell which one is better and stronger and so on. Over time you find some bearings to work a little better than others so you tend to stick with those. But then the manufacturer sneaks up on you with changes more or less radical and, if they turn out not to be up to snuff you’re screwed because it’s always the engine builder’s fault. It may be the fault of the guy who assembled it, the car manufacturer, the guy who built the turbo… anybody but the bearings manufacturer’s fault.
So what do you do now? An engine is as good and strong as its components are but it looks like so if the engine runs great for a long time it is because it is done using good parts but if it fails too soon it is because the builder did a shitty job. So which bearings do you go with?
ACL sounds interesting but then you have several warehouses and engine builders drop the line because of nothing but problems and returns. When you try to find out what was wrong with them you don’t get a clear answer.
Federal Mogul realized they need better bearings for high performance so they came out with some ugly looking but very good ones for domestics and Hondas but they did not consider Mitsubishi is worth it.
Bottom line they all use fancy denominations for their material and they all think their thing is bigger than others so good luck finding the bearings that will stand up to “regular” abuse let alone detonation.

To add a little information here, the main bearing sets were also changed around the same time. I do not know what was exactly changed, but the main bearing part number changed from MS 2043 to MS 2076.

Thats the thing guys. Price.

I can get Aluminum Clevites rod and mains for $30 out the door, however, do I want to?

Anyone run these bearings for a long time yet?

when i rebuilt my bro's 6 bolt we used oem bearings, which costed us around 100$ cnd. You might pay like 30-40 dollars more but doesn't that give you peace of mind that your getting better quality

hello everyone..i have had king bearing's (main's and rods) in my car for 10k miles now and everything is fine so far..i had my crank cut to .10 under and polished ..my car goes low 11's at over 125 mph..and i use the car almost everyday! the same machine shop that polished my crank supplied me with king bearings...i was fishy at first but he told me alot of race guys use king bearing's

this is for my 91 mitsu gsx awd turbo 6 bolt motor

Price....

I pay $30 for M77 rod and main bearings everytime I buy them. How much are OEM's? More than double I would bet.

Sounds trivial considering the investment in a rebuild.

This is an expensive hobby - money saved (regardless of amount) is a big deal to me. I don't want to spend $80 on Mitsu bearings when I can spend $30 on Clevites, which have an equal reputation for quality and functionability.

I wouldn't use junk on my car just to save a buck. But if I found a part that was of equal quality of OE, but for half the price, then that is a no-brainer to me.

I would agree that spending more dollars on Mitsu bearings is not worth it. Having built nearily fifty DSM motors I have used Mitsu, Clevite, King, ACL, Vander Vell, and FM bearings. Some I like better than the OEM stuff, but some I do not, however I can aquire all of them for less than the OEM stuff.

you should give us a short review on which bearings you like better and for what reason!

My Clevite 77's were purchased 2 summers ago and have survived low hp but severe abuse at the autox, dragstrip, and the road with no issues whatsoever. I bought oem and had good luck with them, and have had the same luck.

I'm pretty sure mine were the P's. I've broken and replaced too much shit in the time being to really remember though. But the motor's been strong as all hell so far.:thumb:

What exactly are you referring to? If you are talking about engine bearings then Clevite would be my recommendation.

rod/main

i think that is the only thing that all those brands have in common...
