Hey, a Toronto brother! Do I know you from ca.dsm.org?

Back on topic, I just ordered the Calicos from you guys, SBR. I'd still like to know why you guys recomend against installing these in the driveway. I have a bore gauge coming in, if the plastigauge is the issue. I'd just like to use plastigauge as a backup, especially if the bore gauge turns out to be unreliable. I asked John on the phone but he couldn't tell me why it would be a problem either.

Should these be installed with the stock clearance? Ie: .001-.004? I hope the standard size I got will give the right clearance with an unturned used crank and no line hone (stock bolts). I've been hearing the ACL's end up with tighter tolerances. Does the coating make them even tighter?

The coating will give a tighter tolerance mabe 1/2 thousand. Our motors like to see .0012 to .0020 on the mains and rods. Be sure to keep everything spotless clean. Im not sure on using plasigauge on coated bearings with the plasigauge harming the bearing may want to call calico see what they say.

Hey my local Auto Zone has been selling Clevites for years and i went there yesterday to pick up some rodbearings.... I said i wanted that brand and they came back with a box that says Hi-Tech engine components and they said that Clevite is in the process of changing there name to that. Here is the adress i wrote of the company

Hi-Tech
salt lake city, UT 84126

I called SBR and they havent heard anything about this "Name change" and i would think if ANYONE would know they would.

I just wanna know if there is some truth behind this so i dont put in crappy AutoZone brand bearings

Truth be told, regardless of the name change, even SBR is getting away from Clevites (perhaps this is why). If you want a strong bearing, grab a set of ACL's from them and you'll be good to go.

Good luck with your build,

Andy

I havent heard of this, but a guy at the local AZ said there $14 shocks were as good as koni's. I trust there judgment as far as I can trough them. I do know they went to non-tri-metal setup. I ordered a calico coated acl's from SBR at a good price but took a while to get them as they was on back order. I would just go with a set of acl's as that seams to be the new hot ticket, also know oem's get used alot. Best of luck.

Clevites aren't using the same material they used to from what I heard. I order the same bearings as you sho_tyme_psi. Very nice bearings. ACL bearings have the highest rated load for a reasonable price. I'm quite happy with the purchase.

There is a thread where the Clevite's are no longer tri metal anymore......but there was some discussion into where some peeps who track down tri metals and the locations where they found them......do a search if any of you guys are still looking for the tri metal Clevite's.

Just for reference, I decided to try plastigage on the Calico coated ACL's, and it works just fine. The second and third pics show how unaffected the coating is by the plastigage. I just wiped it off with my fingers, didn't need to scrape with my nails or anything. It's slippery stuff.

In fact, the bore gauge scores the coating, but it's only a visual change. You can kinda see it in the last pic. The scratches are not deep, just shiny spots. I got the same effect by scratching the coating with my finger nails. It loses the matte finish, but never comes off.

I like the look of these bearings, we'll see how they hold up. Shouldn't have a problem since people seem to like ACL's.

I think you guys missed the boat.

Mike wasn't saying that plastigauge ruins the coating or something. What he was saying is that once the bearing is coated you begin to play with very tight tolerances. You need to have a piece of equipment that accurately measures the bearings and journals so that you can know the precise amount of clearance.

I dunno, mine are loose enough according to the bore gauge as well. Also, Calico says you can run tighter tolerances with the coating, for whatever that's worth.

What's the difference between P-series and AL-series Clevite main and rod bearings? I found some on summit racing.

For high rpms and horsepower , it looks like the trimetal is better . That is my interpretation on the article .

it also says the aluminum holds better or something though and that's what most newer cars have.

This is true , however are you going for stock or higher horses and rpms ? I think we both need aanother opinion .

Advanced Auto Parts and Autozone have two different type of Clevite Main Bearings.
Part Number
MS2043P
MS2076P

Which One should I go with?

I'd doubt they actually have the P's in either. I'll bet they give you the AL's which are aluminum. Clevite switched from Tri Metals to aluminum some time ago and its very very hard to find any P's anymore.
