So when is the best time to do an oil change in general?

Cold engine?
Warm engine?..1-2 min of warming up
Right after driving like a beast?

:ohdamn:im sorry but REALLY!? cold engine, COLD ENGINE! :banghead:

Incorrect sir.

Operating temp is best. At this point the oil has been flowing for a decent time and the majority of the contaminants in your engine are suspended in the oil. Yes you run the risk of being burned but as long as you are careful you'll be fine.

Take it from someone who worked at a lube shop for a year, warm engine... don't beat your car just before an oilchange unless your going to run a second chnge as a flush through the car, you want the oil to be at operating temp when you do an oil change because 1. It actually makes the oil change faster, 2. It makes it so that the engine gets rid of a percentage of the crap that builds up inside it, 3. You have a better chance of getting all of your old, worn out oil out if its at temp because the oil is always thinner when its hot.

How do you guys feels about adding lucas to your oil change? I use it and seems to be pretty good stuff.

Warm is what I was thinking since cold is usually thicker and when warmed up it tends to be thinner.

Speaking of additives, I'm doing my girls oil change on her 1997 Honda Accord V6 that thing literally has the loudest tick from hell I've ever heard. Her mechanic told her to add a 4 quarts of conventional oil 10w-30 and fill up the rest of it with Lucas engine treatment. That shit don't work for crap.
Is their an alternative I can try to use, for example..thicker oil, certain oil?
Temps around here average at 65-75* and drop to mid 40s.

I have no idea what you just said, but it sounds funny. LOL

Lucas oil stabilizer actually does exactly what it's advertised to. The problem is, it also does what isn't advertised, which is foam up and lower the ability of the oil to lubricate and transfer heat.

Wes said it best: If you need an additional additive, you're using the wrong oil.

LOL, Fixed!
Just woke up :p

But then what kind of oil would be a good candidate for loud ass tick?
I talked to the mechanic about it and he said that those type of cars are known for having loud ticking and that it's completely normal?

For a lifter tick in a NA vehicle, there are oil detergents that can be added and are run for about 15 min to clean out anything in the motor. A flush or 2 is required after treatment to rid the motor of contaminates.

Ive heard that before. ROFL

Not really. Drink another cup of coffee and then reread your fix. LOL

Actually it makes SOME sense, we are talking about oil in this thread and I quoted a post another member posted regarding my original question. I didn't think it was necessary to include the term "oil" to tell others what I was referring to. If you didn't know what I was referring to, then there's a good chance you didn't read the entire thread that lead up to my post.

But anyways, enough of that. :p

Wes, what kind of oil detergents would those be?

I've never ran any thing but oil in my car. No "sludge removers" or "tick stop fix" stuff. When my lifters started really ticking, it was usually about time to change the oil anyway. New oil quieted them down a lot. Then I put the revised lifters in and haven't had issues since.

I don't know what to recommend for that other car.

how r u going to say incorrect sir? ive had my car for 7 years and always have done my oil changes cold and my car has over 150,000 miles on it with mods and 350awhp and i just did a compression test and leak down test and everything is still running very strong. so im not incorrect SIR! thank you

Just because you haven't had any problems yet does not mean you are correct.
Changing the oil when its cold leaves behind an astonishing amout of oil that would run out if the oil was at temp, oil left behind tends to be the most contaminated portion of the oil that is being removed, therefor you are running all the same crap through the engine that you wanted to remove by changing the oil. You may notice that if you ever try changing your oil at temp... you'll notice more oil comes out, that is the amount that you have recycling through your engine which will shorten the life of your engine, 150,xxx miles is not that many, my car has 188,520 right now, and I'm going to be adding another 20 on the way home today.
Try doing some research as to how and why to change your oil, you just might learn something, take it from me.... I did spend a year as a lube tech after all.:hmm:

A little of both actually, worked at a lube shop while going to UTI.

So I've been on both ends of the position and say what I say as a result.

Your welcome! I am going to call you incorrect be cause you are. If you need a reason I'm pretty sure I posted why as well. So not only did I contradict your unsupported claim I made my claim and then provided evidence to back it up. Just because you don't have an issue doesn't make it right. I'm not perfect, but I am man enough to admit when I'm wrong and not lash out when I get contradicted.

Thanks for the warm up demon.

Anytime brother man, anytime. Just can't stand people who have to be right even when its been proven clear as day that they are wrong on a subject.

Alright Alright!

The best time to do an oil change is at running temp.

Thanks!
