does anyone know if the Contitech timing belt is any good or is it crap?

You're going to get lots of shreiking and whining about OEM ONLY.

Continental's a big name, easily as big in Europe as Good Year is here. Their products should be fine. I'd also trust Gates.

MachV sells a "kevlar" timing belt that's supposed to have a greatly extended service life. I don't know who nor to what extent it's backed. And I thought all Gilmer belts used kevlar.

Have some fun, write Continental a letter and ask them. You'll be amazed how corporations answer inquiries like this.

i need a new timing belt really soon and i was wondering if its better or worse to get an aftermarket timing belt, instead of an OEM timing belt? thanks.

im thinking of getting one of those packages from prostreetonline cause they look to be cheap and have everything you need for a complete install.

so, wait, those are OEM parts, just being sold cheaper by prostreet?

they give mitsu part numbers with them. my friend has the kit on his gvr4 and it has held up great for the last 7k so far. no problems at all. the only thing is, u need to but the idler pulley and balance shaft belt tensioner. they dont come with the kit.

Before i get bashed i did a search and could not locate anything. Im getting ready to have my timing belt done i can get a goodyear from autozone for 33 dollars or oem from mitsubishi for 109. What would you recomend is aftermarket as good as oem. I am new to the dsm area so i want to do it right let me know.

Thanks

Use the OEM belt every time, regardless of the price. Timing belts are not something you try to save some money on. Many people on this forum will say the same thing.

I had a goodyear belt on my first gen several years ago, the belt frayed a bit, skipped several teeth and did some pretty serious damage.

Good Belt, proper installation equals 60,000 miles of trouble free driving.

Get cheap on either equals a sad story in here.

Good Luck

agreed. also you probably will not want to hear it, but if the tb needs changing you should really change both tensioner pulleys, idler pulley, tensioner, water pump, balance belt if you still have it. plus it would be a good idea to replace the 3 seals in the block also. it can add up real quick, but if your going to do it...whats the catch phrase...

DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT.

Thanks everyone i appreciate all the help i just got the car a month ago its a 92 talon tsi awd with only 82,000 miles on it looks like the belt was never replaced its a got a small section of it missing nothing else wrong with the car other then minor oil leaks from the oil line off of the turbo to the pan but thats it... im going to go with oem and do everything right the first time thanks guys.

Great advice, especially the tensioner, maybe old mitsu will tell us how he feels about not replacing the tensioner. ROFL :p

I agree with the "DO IT ONCE, DO IT RIGHT" phrase. I have 54xxx on my 98 Talon and when I get it changed when it's near 60k, I'll be changing with OEM parts:
1) Timing Belt
2) Balance Shaft Belt
3) Idler Pulley
4) Tensioner Pulley
5) Balance shaft belt pulley
6) Tensioner
7) Waterpump
8) Alernator belt
9) Power steering belt and
10) A/C Belt

I'm not sure what 3 seals in the block Jim is talking about. I'm guessing cam seals is one of them. What about the other 2 - EGR valve gasket and water outlet gasket?

I am debating if I should buy the parts from slowboy or the local Mitsubishi dealership in town. I'm worried that if something goes wrong and the part is from slowboy, the local dealership is going to say - sorry, your part is/was bad.

Im looking get a new belt also as i just got my shortblock back from the machine shop.. I was gonna go with a Gates belt.. as they are suppose 2 be good.. (Napa sells them also with the napa name rather) Made by gates.. about 70.00 .. also i was thinking the mitsu belt. or how about the Greddy extreme???? anyone running that belt

You got it. Not changing the tensioner is like running naked through a Turkish prison. You can do it, but if you get caught..............

Actually there's "the list" that should be replaced when doing the timing belt.

For those that adhere to that axiom "do it right the first time" Those blessed souls can drive 60,000 relative trouble free miles before doing it again. I read a lot of posts and it almost always comes back to leaving things in that should be replaced, or installed improperly. Especially that damn auto tensioner.

Don't get cheap. :nono: :D

Good Luck
