Newbie with a rally car.

Hello everyone, I am completely new to DSM... And Frankly completely new to rally.

I got a 1990 Eagle Talon for a damn decent price, and with a current SCCA Logbook and Rally America approval and race history I find myself extremely pleased.
I am located in Colorado, south of Denver. Sold my 2005 supercharged Lotus Elise to get into hillclimbs and stage rallies... Maybe some Rally-x to get me started though.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the future.

The car is.. well... "modified"... with a few dents tossed in for good measure

I could have spent $20k caging, and modifying my STi and wreck it my first time out... ~_~

I have been to one rally (North Nevada Rally) sanctioned by Rally America and part of the Bilstein Southwest Rally series. I wasn't racing though, I'm too chicken =)

I sold the Lotus about 3 months ago, have been looking for a rally car for over a year.

Was tossing around the idea of a awd-nonturbo scoobie-roo, but this DSM was too good of a deal.

under $5k delivered from 14 hour round trip by a very kind seller.
built engine, hotbits rally suspension, big 16g turbo, full roll cage (the $2500-4000 kind of roll cage), FIA approved seats and harnesses, 3 sets of compomotive rally wheels, 2 sets of stock wheels, 3 sets of rally/gravel tires, 1 set of slicks, about $2000 worth of spares inc 2 turbos, 1 built head, 3 non-built heads, 2 subframes... et cetera, you get the idea.

Sweet, nice of the previous owner to include all those parts with the sale. You'll more than likely need them! Lol, are you already licensed with Rally America? If I remember correctly you need a certain amount of seat time before you can race in Open AWD..which is the class I think you're going to run in.

Good question, and you are correct.

Colorado does not have any RA events, but they have 5 hillclimbs per year.
The hillclimbs have more lax rules concerning newbie'ism, can race AWD turbo.

Either way, The hillclimbs work as coefficients toward a RA provisional and full license.

Worst case scenario, I toss in an N/A engine and run Open Light if I decide to enter RA events.

Yea you can also build up your coefficients as a co-driver/navigator, so that may be the more cost-efficient way for you to earn the license rather than swapping in a N/A into your current chassis. You could always drop in the rally forums and apparently guys always need a co-driver and crew members for their races so that would be an excellent way for you to build up those coefficients and to network a bit within the rally community.

I've been trying to network, but the co-driving idea is great. I'll start looking into that more closely tomorrow.

Also just now signed up for my first Rally-Cross event, at pikes peak raceway! Woo! The Hillclimbs won't start up again until next year.

Sounds exciting! If you want more info just head to the specialstage rally forum, that's where my friend/ex-coworker got involved with his co-drivers and some of the race organizers. He's the one with the AWD Del Sol, running Open AWD. I can't remember his username though, but I'm sure you can find him.

Oh, Terratrip rally computer, Terraphone intercom system, extinguishers, spillkit, firstaid kit, hydraulic hand-brake too... Basically way too much for me to even try to remember.

Edit; and a turbo timer, manual boost controller, fmic, bov, extra crank shaft, 3 center diffs, 1 front, 2 rear... hoses for every single everything... I'm gonna have to sit down and itemize all of this

I hate you. When you need a co driver, I'm ready to go. I my self have been planning an open light build for a while. I'm gonna do a 1g awd with a g4cs, a faceplated trans, and obviously hotbits suspension. For now I'm going to attempt to run some rallycross events in my 90 galant GSX. I looked at the open light results for a few years and I think with a dsm would be best running non turbo in the class, especially for a privateer. The maintanance cost will be significantly lower, I think.

Yup that's him. I crewed for him for the Nevada Race and did alignment adjustments for his car for one of his RallyX events. He also taught me how to MIG in return for my favor =) Doubt you guys will ever meet since you're in Colorado but he's one helluva cool dude.

It's actually super easy! As long as you keep a steady hand you'll be fine. I would suggest picking up a used welder to learn on, it definitely comes in handy =)

I'm curious as to what diffs it has.
