Need tips on buying a used turbo

I'm going to be looking at a used 14b and small 16g to put on my 2g Talon while I stock up supporting parts for my 20g. I was wondering what I should be looking for to make sure I'm getting a decent turbo.

Check for the normal stuff, check for in/out and side/side shaft play. Also check for any cracks on the turbine side.

Alright I'll check those things. On the "small" 16g are there any markings that I should look for to make sure that it isn't a Ebay knockoff or anything?

Make sure it says td05h on the compressor side and theere are numbers tha tstart with 49178.

Thanks, that will help alot. Any idea how to tell that the 14b is a not a 13? I heard that they look similar. It seems that you can't trust people on that kind of stuff these days.

14b will have single vaned blades while 13g is double vaned like a 16g and will say tdo4 while the 14b is tdo5.

Not everyone can afford a new $500-$1600 turbo. If we all could, we all would. And those used Holsets seem to be holding up quite nicely, even after 100,000 miles.

if anyone knows something about used turbos, its JusMX141.

my 14b i got from him i beat to hell, even had it spiking to 25 psi at one point...2 years strong, 1 year at 15 psi, and ZERO shaft play what so ever...

25psi on the stock fuel system with my FWD's old 14B? Was that happening when you were driving around with no exhaust, boost creepin' the sh!t out of it?

Some worthwhile advice.

There's nothing wrong with buying a used turbo that was properly cared for. Follow the guidelines in my "Used Turbo" thread and you'll never have a worry.

it was when i got my mbc and it was messed up, so it wasnt opening the wastegate at all,
