Which evo tranny can I put in my Eclipse, it’s making some odd noises so I think it may be going out? I’m only 16 but I want this Eclipse to stay with me forever so I'm willing to do whatever for it. Please lead me in the right direction

Where are you from (approximately), kiddo? I have a freshly rebuilt NV-T350 in central AL for sale. I won't be shipping it though.

You can't buy these transmissions new anymore but with knowledgeable junkyard hunting you can get something. You can also still buy most of the rebuild parts. Though doing it yourself isn't something I'd recommend pursuing at the age of 16 unless you have extra money, time and a passion to tear it apart. I rebuilt my first manual transmission at a slightly older age but mistakes were made and some parts had to be ordered twice. You know, paying a knowledgeable transmission shop to rebuild it is far more costly than getting a used one from a junkyard or rebuilding your current one.

As already stated, there...
Word from the wise: if you're going to want to keep a DSM forever, you're going to have to learn to search for the stuff you need instead of asking strangers in other countries for links to make your life easy. These are 25 year old cars, and in the case of the T-350, haven't had new parts available over a decade, so you're going to have to get accustomed to finding things locally.

i just don’t want to buy the wrong one on accident.

If your car is a oz edition it should be 420a. So that means there are zero evo trans that will work in your car. Neons and avengers are cars that have the same power plant. Some parts are direct swap and some are not.

Maybe someone else will chime in to verify which years you’re looking for.

As already stated, there aren't any Evo transmissions that will work for your car. They nest a different drivetrain and are a different platform entirely. You may be getting confused with some minute similarities with 2G turbo models and certain Evo models. But none of this relates to your Mopar drivetrain.

Before I continue, you shouldn't immediately assume that the transmission is bad because of strange noises. You need to find the exact cause of the noise. With no description of stated noise I won't throw any guesses out, but for example the throw out bearing could be noisy and will sound internal but it isn't.

Do you experience grinding while shifting? Does it ever pop out of gear under load? Does it roar like an internal bearing has gone bad? Any squeaking or squealing? Give us some input on the sound and any other symptoms you experience. Videos would be helpful, if you are able to capture the issue(s).

If you're able to narrow down the noise to definitely coming from the transmission, go ahead and drain the fluid. Look for glitter (metal shavings), metal chunks or any other debris within. If you determine that the noise originates from elsewhere, great job and let's diagnose that if we cross that bridge.

For reference, these transmissions are loosely interchangeable:
- 1995-1999 Dodge Avenger M/T (direct swap)
- 1995-1998 Eagle Talon ESI M/T (direct swap)
- 1995-2005 Dodge Neon M/T (Gearing changes occurred for each generation and later generations require shifter arms being swapped to use in your car).
- 1996-2001 Plymouth Breeze M/T
- 1995-1999 Chrysler Sebring 4 cyl M/T (direct swap)
- 1995-1999 Dodge Stratus 4 cyl M/T
- Some early model PT Cruiser transmissions can be used with slight modification. I'm not sure exactly when but they switched to the G288 around late 2005 to early 2006. Which will bolt up but has many internal and external differences.

Some of these cars used cable clutches so the belhousing is different, but your belhousing can be swapped very easily so that shouldn't sway you from getting one.

Here's a great write up on the basic specs and history of the NV-T350. I haven't fully studied this myself but probably will soon.

I also have a copy of the factory rebuild manuals and the rebuild guide on DVD. I can send over any of this, should you find it necessary to do so.

All of this can be a lot to take in and comprehend at 16, especially so if you aren't so mechanically inclined yet. The first thing to do is figure out if you'll be wrenching on this car yourself or sending it off to a shop. The second thing to do is figure out if the transmission is actually the issue or not. We'll talk about next steps later once you're on track.

This is a good bit of info to be offered without assurance that the transmission is even an issue, but very useful information nonetheless and will be here for viewing many years to come. (The joyous forum reality)

Completely understand that. However, aski g others with more experience and knowledge might ensure you get the right part, but it also keeps you from learning. There is a good middle ground between flying blind and having someone else pilot the plane for you...

Do the research on here on your own. Dig into the forums and posts. Learn as much as you can about the transmission your car came with. Find part numbers. Cross reference those on the internet. Then, armed with more info than you want, ask us informed questions to fill in any gaps and make up for lack of confidence.

Much tougher and more stressful than having someone else give you the answer, but FAR better for you in the long run. You will have taught yourself to fish (with us as mentors when you need it).
