Hello my names Art,
Short version. Bought a red 1999 420a 10th anniversary Eclipse.
The car starts and runs but I want to go trough the spark plugs new belts fluids etc. anyone have any suggestions on what else to do while I renew this time capsule?? Has 60k Miles was just sitting for 10years

Now for an actual answer . I don't see what was wrong with the question. Congrats on the car man! You are correct to do a tune up. Plugs and wires for sure. Id mostly be focused on the fuel system. Siphon all the fuel out of the tank you can, change the fuel filter, and run a cleaner additive with a fresh tank of premium fuel to un-gunk the injectors. Insure the air filter is clean. Check brake lines and wheel cylinders for leakage. Check vacuum lines for cracks etc. Pressure test the cooling system for leaks and fix any you find. Timing belt is definitely something you should do. Your thermostat may be stuck in its position. So be sure the cooling system if working correctly. Thats where I'd start

Congrats.
Disassemble as much as possible.

Replace as much as possible .

You probably wont need too but fuel pump and injectors are a safe bet.
Replace belts since they may be brittle from prolonged rest.

Plugs as well.

Clean out fuel tank.

Blow out and clean fuel lines.
Same for coolant lines.

Lower control arms must be replaced if its still on oem ones.

Being a non turbo car with low miles, I think it has less worn parts. That being said, how are your mechanical skills?

Have you wrenched on cars before? Is there a budget?

Driving the car around will probably show any worn parts and defects

A project car should have 2 of 3 traits. Clean body work, clean intact interior, clean intact drivetrain. Your project appears to have none of those. Not being rude, giving my advice, the amount of work that car needs to run again is not worth the effort to put back into it. In excellent condition that car is only worth about $2500. A new paint job will cost you at least that much

A car that has been sitting for ten years will need new everything. There is a strong chance the engine wiring has been chewed on by rodents. There is a strong chance that the coolant has eroded the system and has eaten away the gasket material.

So in short
Your car will need
New battery ($80)
New engine oil and filter ($20)
New air filter $15
New spark plugs $15
New wires $35
All new belts $50
New radiator hoses $35
New coolant and a flush $50
New water pump and timing belt $100
New cam seals and crank seals. $15
New oil pan gasket $10
Probably needs new wheel bearings $80
New axle seals on the transmission
Probably a new clutch, the old one is probably original
New tie rod ends
New lower ball joints and most suspension pieces have been dry rotted
New tires from sitting too long (tires over 7 years old need to be replaced)
Gas tank needs to be drained and flushed
The fuel lines need to be cleaned and purged
Possibly needs a new fuel pump.
Most likely will need all new tail light bulbs and head light bulbs and turn signals
Probably needs new headliner from clogged rear sunroof drain hole
New rear shoes from being seized in the rear drum

Should I keep going. There is a lot more to look at. These cars are going on 20 years old now.

I will gladly answer any technical problems you may have, it is difficult to answer a question about these cars when you merely ask if you only need to change the spark plugs to get it running again.

My advice is to drain the oil and coolant and flush the cooling system. Replace the battery and do an oil change and then perform a compression test. It would really suck to put a lot of money and work into a car that even in excellent condition is only worth about $2500

The problem with your estimate is that its all guesses.. You haven't laid eyes on the car.. Iv'e daily driven cars much older than even a first gen eclipse. Not everything needs done today. As long as he has good fuel, spark, and compression, and the suggested rubber parts that have deteriorated, IE belts and possible cooling system components, The car will run. Suspension and all that can come as needed. For a lot of us, a 2nd gen eclipse is a dream project car. I've always wanted one. Of course they arent in great condition by now and low blue book level. Should we just haul them off the the junk yard? I have happily put more money into many cars then they are worth because of the satisfaction it brings me. The one I picked up has a tight suspension and quiet wheel bearings. So did an 84 Trans am I picked up once. His list of problems probably isn't as big as you think.

You're exactly right.

I have no idea what the condition of the car or the amount of dedication he will have. He could restore cars for a living and post up an incredible build thread with an evo drivetrain swap.

Awesome man. Glad you're saving this one. Hope you got a good deal. Like said above i'd go through with changing oils, gas, spark plugs, wires, and coolant first. If its been in california its whole life the weather was prolly better to it than northern states and the heat here in the south, so do those first and see if it'll start. I wouldn't trust your tires so look to getting some newer ones. I think it'll drive fine so long as you don't drive crazy and you can work towards a lot of the bigger, more expensive stuff as they break or as you have more money and time. Good luck!

Edit: saw you got it for 800.00. Not bad if all the engine needs is a tune up.
