Hello! I’m new to the community, I just bought a 97GST 5 speed. It came with a rebuilt motor and transmission. A friend of the previous owner built the engine and I’m not entirely too familiar with internal parts for these, could anyone give me some insight on them. See pics of receipts down below.

Anything I should do to the engine bay or engine itself while the engine is out and on a stand?
Best things to do on a fresh build and on first startup?

What clutch should I run? Lightweight or no? This will be a street build but I’m not entirely sure what’s possible on this engine setup power wise.

What’s the best transmission fluid to run?

Any other helpful advice to a new owner would be amazing. I’ve owned 2 4g eclipse GTs. So I’m familiar with the 6g75 but not the 4g63t.

Thank you!

As the car is almost 30 years old, I would recommend checking and probably replacing the hoses and vacuum lines. Also check the condition of the plastic connectors - half of mine snapped when I pulled my engine. Given the rust on the brake and clutch brackets and the slave cyl, it would be a good idea to check your ground points and clean those up too.

As to things you should do as far as upgrades, a lot depends on your goals and budget. You can beef the bottom end up to withstand 1000hp, but without supporting mods it will just be a really expensive engine producing stock power. Your budget and goals will begin to dictate things. For example, do you plan to push more than 25 psi? If so, you might consider a meth injection kit... so you'd need to determine how to route that. Additional fuel volume and pressure would be a must, so an upgraded fuel pump and FPR (usually mounted near the master cylinder).

As to the clutch, there are varying opinions on that. Best to search the forum and see what's been said in the past on it and which brands to consider.

Hello there! Thank you. I’ll definitely sort through those brackets and vacuum hoses. A lot seem to be new, as the engine was rebuilt by the previous owner. With crower cams and acl pistons and thrust bearing. I’ve seen a lot of recommendations from the community for the act 2600 and a lightweight flywheel (since I want this as a fun street car with maybe some autox events) I’m not sure what the fueling setup looks like on this yet. Need to pull the pump and look and also look at the injectors. I’m not sure what psi of boost I plan to run yet as I’m not sure what this rebuilt motor is capable of.

What do you think of these receipts and the engine bay?
