Hello there, I recently got back into the DSM game after selling my old talon.

I just got a rust free black 1990 GSX with an awesome condition checker interior and have been stocking up on some parts for it as well as using parts that were on it when purchased.

My plan is just to push the small 16g to its limit and then get a larger turbo afterwards.

Here is my full mods list.

ENGINE AND TRANNY
1..20 6 bolt with wiseco 8:5:1 pistons, Shot peened rods, ARP studs (balance shafts removed and no AC)
2. 3 angle valve job rebuilt head with 272 cams
3.ACT2600 clutch
4.Shep racing #1 & #2 syncros and shift fork

TURBO AND EXHAUST
5. Ported 2g Exhaust manifold with 44mm HKS wastegate dumped of course.
6. Small 16g with Bullseye housing ($270)
------Ported inlet removing the lip (as seen below), j pipe outlet ported to 2"

15. Full 2.5" intercooler pipes short route straight to D openings near rad
(small 16g clocked so the j pipe oulet is facing downward. J pipe is just the flange with a 2" long 2" diameter section coming off with a 2"-2.5" 90 degree elbow) ($105 in couplers and clamps)
16. MAFT with 3" MAS ($150)
17. Dual type RS bovs (vented) ($70 for both)
18. Port matched intake manifold

COOLING
19. Fluidyne aluminum radiator with (dual 12" 1500cfm slim fans ($44))

TUNING
20. SAFCII
21. Stage 3 EPROM
22. Data Logger

Here is a picture of the engine as it is right now.

I made a 4" intake out of a piece of old exhaust. I painted it black with red pearl. Turned out good especially for free. The bend fit perfectly; the filter was not clamped on so its not straight in the photo.

I am going to be taking the car home this weekend if the weather clears up and I can move my WS6 out of the barn.

Once its home parts will start going on.

Hey guys I am getting ready to order my couplers and some intercooler stuff. I can't decide on blue or black couplers. All of my piping is polished aluminum. Turbo, exhaust mani, and wastegate are all going to be silver and the BOV is obviously Red.
Let me know what you guys think.

Hey guys a little update again. Ran into some financial problems so i'm selling everything. JUST KIDDING ROFL. Not quite that bad. I am not getting the stupid 50 trim though. The whole process has been a huge headache so I think I might hang on to the hahn 20g and eventually put my BEP hot side from the small 16g on and see how fast I can get it to go.

I know a lot of people hate on hahn for their 10cm hot side but mine has a standard 6 or 7cm hot side. Is there any reason not to use one of these turbos other than the huge hot side they normally come with? I will be running an external 44mm wastegate.

Kevin

I didnt know you had a hahn 20g laying around. I would mate that with the s16g hotside and sell the hahn exhaust housing and keep the s16g for a spare turbo?

Yeah at times I forget its even on the car. I haven;t driven this car yet its just been sitting at the body shop I work at.

Well my hahn has a regular 7cm housing. Apparently someone swapped it out before. Should I go with the 20g right off the bat with the BEP housing or run the 16g first and then swap the housing over and run the 20g?

The BEP is 8cm right? If it is I would probably go with that.

Its actually 7 but its doesn't bottleneck at the bottom like a mitsu. housing. It is very open id have to say twice as big as an unported 7cm at the bottom. Plus its stainless steel.

You can see in post #18 on this thread how wide the housing is even at the bottom.

The only reason Hahn gets a bad reputation among DSMers is their turbos use a more-universal T3 turbine housing which doesn't fit our manifolds. By the time you go out and buy a T3 manifold and all the things necessary to make the Hahn 20G work properly, you should probably be running a turbo that is larger than a 20G. It's a Catch 22.

The Hahn turbos are designed to be used on cars that didn't already come with a turbo, so they're set up with a larger turbine housing to offset the higher compression ratio of those engines compared to our.

I vote 20G in the Bullseye TMM1 turbine housing.

I like where you're going so far....you went from a 16G which is proven, to the 50-trim which is garbage, to the 20G which is tried-and-true.

Same with the BOV- one Tial is WAY better than two Greddy junkers.

You're on your way to a fun ride!

The larger hahn turbine housing (which is real mhi turbine housing), is pretty much required to get enough out of the td05h turbine wheel to merrit even having a 20g compressor. . . Though the bep housing flows more than the puny and fluid-flow deficient MHI 7cm^2 housing, I don't know if the BEP housing will flow enough to merrit a 20g compressor on the other end.

Yes you will have more lag with a 10cm^2 housing, but you will have more flow potential to exploit the 20g compressor beyond the evo3 16g flow range. Remember, you will also have more lag with a td06 turbine wheel in the 7cm^2 turbine housing and the td06 turbine wheel is the proper wheel for the 20g compressor.

I didn't think the hahn had a td06 turbine wheel? Has anyone seen the BEP housing like the one I have? I am telling you guys its a decent size. I will pull the hahn off this weekend and see what things look like.

They don't. What i said is that you *need* the 10cm2 hahn (MHI) turbine housing to probably get enough flow with their td05h turbine wheel to merrit the large 20g compressor. I've used your bep bolton housing on several turbos. The 18g compressor could use it with the td05h turbine wheel, as I've run that combination. But I still had to run quite high boost and had issues with back pressure with this setup. There's more to the hotside than the scroll. The turbine wheel determines the flow. The turbine housing tweeks some spool for some flow.

Everything would be fine with a 7cm^2 or BEP bolton housing with the 20g compressor if you had the larger turbine wheel. But something has to flow significantly more: turbine wheel or housing.

The BEP housing looks so big at the inlet because it has a ported inlet; and looks so big at the volute because the walls are so thick to prevent cracking.

Realized I never even posted a pic of the car.

I am a painter so I will be repainting the whole car in gloss black. Can't decide what to do with the rims quite yet though. They are either going to be black again or gold. I have a really sweet gold I mixed up at work but I'm not sure if it will look lame with gold wheels.

The gold I mixed up looks like this.

Dark Bronze definitely wins for my rim color choice.

These were clean when we got to the track, but after 3 passes they already were covered with brake dust from the massive Baer binders on my buddy's 2G:

They look black at night, but in the day they sparkle rather nicely.

I really want to get into the 11's with this car. Just not sure what route to take. haha

Haha....that's photo's of a 20G I rebuilt for a customer not long ago!

That turbo will definitely get you into the 11's. I know a guy that ran an 11.79 on a TD05H 20G a couple season back at 25psi on a mildly-built 1G. Hell, there are guys running 10's on 16G's...anything's possible!

Weird! Yeah I stole the picture off this site. haha

Ok well I am going to use the 20g with the BEP hot side an see how it goes. Not sure what size injectors to use now though.

Well I have some 880's a buddy would sell me for a good price so I think I will just pick them up. Also I am dropping the crappy 2 1/4" press bent exhaust that is on the car now soon and I am going to weld up my full O2 back 3" exhaust.

Seems like i've seen pics of home made 3" exhausts on here before but can;t seem to find any now. Anyone have any pictures or links? I can obviously just copy the one that is on there now but I am interested to see different routing and designs people have done.

Kevin

Well I've got bad news. I am parting the car out due to financial problems and I have another project that I really would like to focus on right now. Sorry to disappoint everyone that was looking forward to seeing this happen but I have a deal on something right now that I can't pass up. Don' worry I will be back for more once my other project is done.:hellyeah:
