I was driving along this evening and all the sudden I start to feel and hear a HORRIBLE grinding and clunking noise coming from what sounds like under the car. Very noticable, plenty loud. The sound happens whether I'm in gear or in neutral (I have a MT). I turned the car off and just let it roll in neutral and it still was grinding/clunking. I drove it home since I was about 2 miles away and had to go about 20mph b/c the faster I went, the louder it was. I do have a ripped CV boot on the inner FRDS, so I jacked up the front and spun the wheel as fast as possible and didn't hear the noise. It was getting late and cold and I have no idea what's wrong.

What's the most likely cause? Transfer case, center diff, something else in the tranny, rear end??

Please help me out here.

well what you have sounds like when he broke part of his drive line, but that was a RWD. wish i could help you more.

If it's not the transmission.. I'll be happy. I really don't have $1000 to throw around.

u can get a tranny cheap! very cheap. you just have to look. If its coming from the back its ## rear end. if its under u. is it hard to get in gear? can u feel it at the shifter? I honestly think its your rear end. if it clunks in nuetral.

My car made a loud sound when the center differential broke. But the noise was only when I made a slow turn.

Well it's coming from under the car. Yes, I can get it in any gear no problem. Same sound happens whether I'm in gear, in neutral, turning, going straight, engine off, engine on, whatever.. if I'm rolling it makes the noise.

Okay, we got it up on all 4's and the front turns fine. The rear wheels are hard to turn, feels like a lot of resistance. Also, the drive shaft looks like it tries to engage when turning the back wheels by hand, but it doesn't. It does spin when the car is on and in gear. I don't know if this is the norm or not. Any ideas?

Well we got the transfer case out and it's fine. now when spinning the wheels, I can see the little gear in the tranny that connects to the transfer case (whatever that's called) is not spinning. If you jerk the wheel back fast enough in the other direction, the gear spins very briefly and you hear a light clanking noise. I'm gonna drain the tranny fluid next. This sucks. :(

Wow, nice to know I'm talking to myself here.

I've decided to go with a 4 spider gear center diff from speed design. Question is, should I take the entire tranny apart to ensure there are no metal shavings/pieces that could hurt the rest of the tranny? Should I just replace it and not worry about that? I don't know much about transmissions, but I'd like to know how I should go about this. Thanks.

Hey i would diffidently. I'm surprised that it wasn't your transfer case. If you do drain the fluid and it is metallic then for sure. I just drained mine yesterday and it was like metal flake paint. I don't think it moves the rear axle when you spin the front tires. I did with mine in gear and the backs didn't move.My buddies car made a crazy ass noise last week and his rims were loose so i would check that also. LOL just a close inspection of anything that moves and see it everything is where it is supposed to be. i really don't think it is the trans so much. it sounds like transfer. but i'm not there to hear it.

Sounds like you hand grenaded your center differential. You better TALK to Shep and tell him about what you want done, and what is broken -- it will NOT cost less than $1000. If you popped your center diff, you will have $500 in a new stock center diff with torrington bearing mod alone.

Pull the transmission, and ship it to a DSM transmission builder like: Jacks Transmissions (jackstransmissions.com), Shep Trans (sheptrans.com), or TRE (teamrip.com).

There is an assortment of special tools needed and a decent amount of mechanical knowledge to properly pull apart the transmission and diagnose all the problems with it; if you have never done it before, it is worth letting a professional do it correctly the first time.

Yeah, I just figured I'd throw I'd let Shep upgrade my tranny. But if I can get one really cheap, I may do that. How cheap are we talking here?

yoy can get a stock one for super cheap like 300 or less. depending on where you find it. I believe its either your center diff or your transfer. If your clanking whether in gear or not you deff messed up your diff or transfer case. I really dont thin its your tranny. check the center diff and transfer case and check those first. it could also be your rear. its always a possibility. alot of rear diffs blow out under hard launching.

transfer case is out, inspected, drained, checked and is fine.

rear end is fine.

with car off ground, in neutral, transfer case off, looking at little gear that hooks into transfer case from tranny (whatever it's called), when spinning front wheels it DOES NOT turn. I would think it should.

I know this is an old thread but I'm having a very similar problem. I have a loud clunking and grinding noise that sounds like its coming from the driver's side front wheel. But thats while I'm driving.

It does it at any speed in any gear and in nuetral. Even with the car turned off. I have not done any hard launches and I have not even been into boost that much. I jacked the car up and could not see anything wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I go dumping money into something that wont fix the problem.
