2G Grinding noise when accelerating

I have tried to look this one up in previous threads but couldn't get an answer from other owners as to what their problem was... I have a grinding noise mostly in 2nd and especially 3rd gear at around 3000rpm when accelerating, or when at 3000 in general. Noise stops when clutch is pushed in, and when accelerating to higher rpms (becomes smooth again.)

When going uphill in low gear it is especially loud and noticeable, doesn't sound like rocks in a can but more just like typical grinding/buzzing/slight rattle(no knock) Engine is stock. Sounds like pretty general description but any suggestions as to what it could likely be ?

Possibly loose heat shields around exhaust pipe and muffler? Different vibrations happen at different hatmonics while accelerating. Happened on my 99.

get in your car, start it, if it not already, put it in neutral, let off the clutch pedal and rev it to 3000 rpms.
Does it make the noise?
If it does pop the hood and rev it up and see if you can tell where its coming from.

I have no idea how much you know about cars, so if you don't know how to rev it with your hand on the throttle body, you'll have to say so.

I Rev'd it to 3000 and it makes a little rattle but to much less of an extent but still noticeable.. the sound seems to come from the engine block itself, possibly motor mounts?

If its sound like its coming from the front of the engine, it could be the heat shields on the turbo and manifold, like was already suggested. Make sure the bolts are tight and also check the bracket the bolts the exhaust to the block. If you have a stock downpipe, check the heat shields on that too.
those would be rattling, its hard to say without hearing it, but if you have a bearing going on a pulley it can make a grinding sound. the A/c compressor clutch can too.

If it sound like its coming from the fire wall side, i guess a loose bracket like the one on the bottom of the intake or the exhaust heat shields.
You may want to get a mechanics stethoscope, even the $5 or $6 ones from harbor freight will work to help track down the source of the noise.
