So i have a 1991 gsx auto. I just got the car and have replaced belts and everything else you should do. I bought a boost guage, dsm link, exhaust(after i choose a turbo) already has a 2.25, intake, and wide band. Now i'm looking for a turbo that is good on 93 pump since its my DD. I looked at the holset 35, 20g and 30r but cant decided which would be best. My wanted goal is around 450 but would settle for 400. Really looking for one that wont cause me to change the manifold if possible.

Also any other thoughts on the build....I know i'll need a fmic but thats after the turbo is bought as well.

20G will get you to your 400 HP mark on pump. I don't know what you were making and I am not trying to be a dick, but most guys who pick 450 as a number have no idea what it entails or what it really is (a headache maintain). No reason to go for 450 until you experience 350, and an E316G will get you there. You can definitely have a street driven 11 second car off an E316G making 380ish HP.

Thanks spawn and no offense taking at all. My gst was around 330 but after looking into it more im going to shoot for the 350-400 goal.

I would say go with the 20G off e85 if it comes to your area and you can see in the 450 range. Just remember 330 on that GSX is going to feel like so much more than the GST.

In ancient times, the T04E50 compressor was the pump gas king because it offered airflow similar to a 20G but was more efficient at lower boost levels....meaning at, say, 23psi the E50 compressor would move air the same as (or more than) a 20G, but the air would be cooler and less-likely to cause detonation.

Looks like im going for either a 16g or 20g. Thanks for the input.

look for an fp green, im surprised no one has said it yet, its a higher flowing turbo than the 20g, and flows spools like a 16g. No one has talked about how late spooling the 20g is. The fp green can get you into the 400s easy and spools faster than most turbos in its class! Also its still mhi so reliability is there!

The 20G isn't late spooling, maybe back in the day when we were all tripping our way through this, but with proper supporting mods, it spools really good, just use a TD05H and call it a day.

Have you personally used a 20G with "proper" supporting moods that make it spool really good. Or are you going off of hearsay. I have nothing against the Td05 turbo's but there are a lot of great options out there so i don't see why we don't move forward with the times.

I was not asking for someone else's opinion i was just looking for some proof like a log. I'm not trying to break your balls i just want the OP to know that there are other options.

Yeah, but sometimes you don't need to go beyond a simple bolt-on turbo to get to your goals. Sometimes the typical route is okay to follow.

TDO5 20g's spool up really well. I have a B16g, worked on/rode in/tuned a HX35, and driven a friend's 20g. I really liked the tdo5 20g, the tdo6 20g was a dog until 4500-5000rpm, then it took off.

The 20g is only $50 more @ FP right now, put on a 7cm housing and it will bolt up and rock. The E3 is also great, and the holset is really awesome if you think you may need more than 400hp. I wouldn't run the holset without a twin scroll in the stock 12cm housing.

If money was no object, I'd probably be running a 20g. When I had tapped that out, I'd run a holset. I couldn't really see a 20g getting too boring on the street though.

I loved my old tdo6 20g, that was one of my best street turbo's I have ever owned! I have had alot of turbo's in my time, and that by far was the best one for me. Mine hit full boost around 4k rpms, with stock 6bolt block, comp 101200 cams, dsmlink, 650cc injectors, ect! I don't know what my power was with that turbo on 18-20 psi, but I drove to and from the track ( two hours one way ) and ran 12.3s all year long, without any issues!

HX35 or a BW S256/258. I would not recommend the 20g in any variant. For the performance you can get equal quality and superior performance for cheaper. And I would not recommend a 16g. All TD05 turbos are just fire breathers and don't accel on pump gas. They do fine, but not great.

The first two I mentioned are affordable, high quality and will meet your goals.

^ exactly. The words 400hp, 93oct, td05h, should not be used in the same sentence, unless it reads: It is very hard, if not impossible to make 400whp on a td05h based turbo.

I made 430ish on my cheap hx35 on pump, fairly easy too. I couldn't get shit out of my 16g.

Are you shitting me?

The old-school FP Green used a T04E50 compressor (larger than 20G) paired to a TD06H turbine, which is the largest MHI turbine available for DSM use. There is NO WAY a FP Green would spool the same as a 16G or outspool a TD05H 20G for that matter.

A TD05H 20G is the ultimate street turbo for cars under 25psi. It's a direct bolt-on replacement using all of the OEM oil and coolant lines, and the spool is almost identically to the Evo III 16G...in fact, back-to-back users will notice no difference in spool at all. The TD05H 20G hits much harder than the Evo III 16G and pulls a few hundred RPMs longer as well. Another benefit is the downfiring compressor cover...no need for a j-pipe. ;)
