Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Megan FMIC

No name brand but has the standard psi and efficiency spill

Street Imports FMIC

XOXO Core but has good feedback on the core

would you guys buy something if someone made a kit that was really cheap and you were able to keep your foglights?

Richie

It seems that for the price of these kits, keeping the foglights wasn't really a big factor. Sure I would have liked to keep them, but then again for the price, I was willing to lose them. Also, a lot of these guys probably wouldn't buy the kit as most in this thread have already purchased the FMIC Kit. Although if you do what you say, i'm sure theres a market, its worth a shot! :thumb:

If you are a 2gb eclipse and you want to keep your foglights, you will have to get a core that has the two endtanks in plane with each other towards the bottom. Then you can route to your stock UICP location and keep your foglights.

Earlier in this thread I believe there was someone that used this kit and still kept their fog's by mounting the core a little lower.

Or you can always get some smaller aftermarket fogs and some custom brackets and keep em in the same place . (just a thought)

Ok, so I just realized today, after reading the how-to for the 2G install for the 3rd time, that you have to relocate the coolant bottle. Any suggestions on where to relocate it to?

You put your coolant reservoir next to the turbo? WTF OMG

oh sorry i should have specified what i ment. What i was saying is if you got rid of your a/c and run single or two smaller fans...either slimline(s) or stock moved over, you can tie the resevoir directly the radiator on the passanger side of it.

I'm running 2 12" slimelines between my fmic and radiator as pushers so my radiator is open territory:D

Okay, so where are you auto guys putting your tranny coolers? Couldn't you just put both of the on the driverside in the fender well? I think I am going to enjoy installing this kit. I want to make as clean as possible.

Is anybody with stock fans and radiators expireiencing any overheating with the new FMIC?

well I'm sure u could fit both with aftermarket tranny cooler. I'd have to look at mine to see if it could fit both if i wanted to install the kit on my DD.

You could install the cooler on the passanger side too. It would be up to you if you want to run the cooler directly off the trans and eliminated the radiator "cooler" or if you want to loop the hoses back around when it comes out of the radiator.... long ass routing if you as me that way. I'm not sure how effective the radiator is at "pre-cooling" the ATF.

You could also loop the hose around the core support on the drivers side and tie the cooler to the a/c condensor or radiator.

TSImonster I personally have noticed some overheating and I have the stock fans and radiator. Could be completely normal or something else but from what I remember my temp bar never went above half, now im riding at 3/4 most of the time. Sounds like not enough air to radiator? I havent read through all the posts yet to see if others have had similar problems.

Edit: These threads helped me out. Sounds like im gonna get my radiator flushed first god knows how long its been.

Guys. Lets end the Group Buy stuff now. It should have never taken place in the first place. Rule #3 and all..... "Keep the BS out of our forums. We don't want to see: spam, self promotion, advertising of products/services/websites (see our Vendor Policy), group buy posts, Carfax requests, politics, war, religion, etc......"

Group buys are fine to have, just not in the tech forums. If you guys want to keep it going, you'll have to carry on off this thread.

From this point on, let's please keep this thread tech related only.

Just a quick note - we are not against group buys, but they must be posted in the Vendor forum, not here in the Tech forums (or other public forums), and only Supporting Vendors are allowed to post them - they cannot be organized by anyone but a vendor. If you want to discuss this further, please post in the Site Feedback forum so this thread doesn't get ruined.

I guess I can liven this thread up. If you are running the XSpower 2g kit and are having trouble with mounting try this out.

Cut your top/middle mounting tab OFF.
Cut the support so that you can mount the IC outlet into the engine bay.
Ziptie your power steering line closer to the frame.
Use a jackstand/prop to keep your IC to the level that you want it at.
Mark 2 holes where you will want to mount your IC (I'm talking about the two long mounting tabs actually on the IC).
Drill those 2 holes out to about 1/2".
Now put the IC back onto the car with the new holes drilled and mark where you would like to drill into the frame.
Use an 11/32" drill to make your final mounting hole.
Use a 10x1.5 tap to tap the holes.
Use a 10x1.5x25 (or whatever length you want) bolt to mount your IC.

*Note, if you have a 2gb talon you will want to have your IC tabs about 1"-1.5" lower than the bottom of the bumper support bracket. This hangs the IC just low enough to not be seen through the bottom of the bumper. I've also seen another member with a 2gb eclipse use the mounting tabs directly under the bumper support brackets and it fit really nicely with the 2gb outlet.

This method is what I used just yesterday to mount my IC onto my new talon. It took all of 45 minutes and was hassle free. This method also allowed me to NOT relocate my power steering lines and allowed me to not touch or modify the bumper support brackets.

So basically, you just cut off the top bracket, and didn't use it, correct? You're mounting it with just the two tabs on the side? I'm just trying to clarify in my own mind, because it sounds a lot simpler. Why would you need to use a tap? Couldn't you just drill the hole big enough and use a nut on the end to hold it?

Just thought I'd post up in here since I have a 200 ebay bar and plate intercooler. Seems to be working great. Took the car to the dyno and did a bunch of pulls. Then at the end we did a final pull, sprayed the cooler down with water to see if it would cool things down a little and make a little more power, but it made no difference. He said that pretty much shows that the intercooler is performing well as it sits since cooling it off with water didn't make much of a difference at all.

Could you just compare endtake temps?

ok..I bought the SBR J pipe that is for short route piping and I am going to have to say it was the biggest pain in the ass to put on the Evo 16g has anyone else had a problem trying to tighten up 1 of the alan screw's with a Alan wrench ....? Damn I wish I could have found a GT30R so I would not have had to worrie about a stupid ####ing J pipe :notgood:

I know exactly how you feel I have had to deal with that pipe already twice your talking about the allen srew that is on the inner part of the bend right? And if you dont tighten it up good enough it will leak and that area will cuase the car to act all ****ed up. So your not alone with that pipe. :notgood:

Is their anyway to get a 16g to work with it without a new J-pipe. I just don't see myself paying almost $100 for the SBR unit. I guess I find out tomorrow.

FMIC came in today !!! woo hoo. Ultra fast shipping, I just paid for it yesterday and its at my house today! (I live in the same state, had to pay sales taxes to)

Yes, you can rotate the compressor cover 180* and then weld an aluminum piece to it. TRE (amongst others) has done this a few times.....
