Lets talk Ebay FMIC. Especially if you have one.

I have read a couple of threads on ebay intercoolers but just wondering which ones out there that are actually good? Allot of them have something that goes like this

"Good for up to 500bhp(I have seen from 350-600). all our intercooler has been tested to withstand more then 80psi pressure and it has very small pressure drop across the end tanks, at 15psi inlet the out let has 14.8psi that means it has only 0.2 psi pressure drop ,compare to many other intercoolers it is an excellent figure (some intercooler has 1-2psi pressure drop) also at the same condition, the temperature has drop from 120 degree to 28 degree ( and it is an excellent figure for efficiency"

Is the above statement just a bunch of bs or true? Has anyone tried the Megan racing FMIC? I think it's crazy to spend 700+ on a core and piping. I really don't care about name brands I just want it to work. Kinda like a Dave Brode part or Megan Racing or Johnny Racecar FMIC all cheap but effective with great quality. Here are just a couple of FMIC I'm talking about that look good but do they perform and will they last? Please chime in if you have a ebay FMIC or had one especially if it worked or did not work well for you. thanks

Well it looks like with that kit you arent allowed to run a crash bumper, i have other pipes so im cutting and modding now

I am in the process of installing my godspeed fmic as well. How did you guys adapt from the large ic piping to the much smaller j pipe on the compressor?

CXRacing is pretty much the same as Punishment Racing. And if your looking to get that one go to Punishment's website. They are having a sale which is 100 bucks less than that. And they are good kits. No mods and you can keep your fogs!

yea but cxracing wont stay by the prrducts they sell like Punishment.

There have been countless times where someone has posted a PR FMIC on here with questions or comments, and PR always makes a post to help out or figure out the problem. I dont think CXRacing has posted on here not has any comments on their products they sell. Not to mention supporting our vendors.

I just got an SSautochrome kit, and Its freaking sexy. Every thing lined up perfectly. I was missing a coupler and two T-clamps, but they shipped that to my house after a quick email. I was very impressed over all.

my personal opinion vs what i know, metal is metal, name brands dont make a difference, exhaust, intakes, ic piping ics, whatever you say is all the same to me. ive had ebay specials ic and spearco and neither seemed to make a difference from one to the other.

You'd think a tube would be a tube, but even a tube to deliver air or exhaust can be messed up by people who don't know, or improved by people who do. My punishment fmic is nice for the money, but if they were "just as good" as a nice name brand fmic then the big dollar proffesional cars would be rocking more knock off fmic's. When it comes to fmic's, the ability of the intercooler to pass air efficiently while also cooling it is directly related to the research, flow testing, and manufacturing care put into it. While a knock-off fmic could be reversed engineered from a good name-brand fmic, and be a quality piece, why would you want to support that kind of shady garbage? I'd rather support a company that has a vested interest in my hobby, and not the rip-off artists that don't give a crap if their product disintegrates on my car, as long as they get my money first.

my buddy has one of the no name fmic's from ebay ona boosted sunfire runnin 15 psi daily driven with no problems so my guess is there are some good one out there!!!!

Purse your lips and blow. Now go get a coffee straw and blow through that. Which do you think flows more? Piping matters; capillary resistance matters, turbulence matters, and bending/routing matters because it effects all those variables. You are trying to get pressurized, flowing air from your turbo to your throttle body. If you have a quality core, the majority of resistance encountered is going to be through the piping. Shorter, bigger, less bendy piping matters.

Yes and no... Cheap pipe ovals out when tightened too tight. Thicker/higher quality piping never does that (within reason).

Cheap t-bolts=problem, never seem to stay put.
Cheap couplers (4 layer) = Shit yourself explosion. (BLT on my buddies 2.4l/20g at 30psi)

The quality of the whole kit is important, the core just seems more important than everything else because everyone is wants to coolest air. But if you have the best core and shitty couplers, clamps, and/or piping its going to be a shitty setup.

I run a generic ebay ic setup. It works, and it was $50 brand new from a local. I hate the fitment, constant couplers blowing off. But its still better than a 2g SMIC...

Why do you people keep ignoring the facts. This has nothing to do with the intercooler "holding up" a non-load bearing piece of aluminum that will never see 1000s of degrees worth of heat is not going to fall apart, I don't care what brand it is.

The difference between these cheap eBay/PR/VRSF/CX cores and the expensive ETS/PTE cores is the density of the fins. The latter use Garrett style cores which come with high density fins (more fins) which provides more air to intercooler contact which provides more heat absorption which leads to lower IATs which makes more power with less chance of detonation.

The cheaper cores use low density fins (less fins) which means they will never, no matter how much you pray and claim they will, make more power, or have lower IATs or be less likely to cause detonation.

This is simple. If you are using e85 or race fuel, you can get away with a cheaper core, if you are using pump gas, you will get the most power (noticeable power) from the others.
