This is a project we have been working on since November 2020. The engine from the Laser is going into a RWD Toyota Tacoma, mated to a 10R80 Ford transmission. This cage is going to be a 25.3 and the truck will be at similar power capability to the Laser. This thread is to chronicle and document the build.

From the questions above:

The only add to the frame is the temporary bar across the frame to position the trans tail shaft. I’m removing that today.

These are oem 300m coils, from a Chrysler 300m. I do not know if there are distinctions besides that.

The Laser is retired, it is being stored and has no other plans.

More Powertrain mounts are done, the cage kit is here and I am now fitting tubes to the frame. I pulled it down to bare frame behind the engine. There are some parts that are easier to cut off and put back on while the cage goes together, like body mounts. The frame is 0.120” thick, so it is far easier to deal with than unibody sheet metal.

What are the center pieces on both cam gears?
The intake is an evo8 mivec cam gear. I designed and machined that fitting and drove the fuel pump off the exhaust cam in the laser, and that piece is still on it for now. This truck will be a cable drive to a fuel pump and tank in the bed.

Vader fuel pump drive on exhaust cam and looks to be a mivec setup on the intake.

Nice use of the 6 bolt girdles

So is the laser done or is this just a spare motor.

Just read above. Thanks for all the inspiration never saw the car in person but always kept up with what you did with it.

I made some really good progress over the past couple days. The cage cut and bent from the cad model is amazing compared to coping all the tubes by hand. I will never go back to that method!

The cage build package was manufactured by CalWest Mfg.

This looks amazing! May I ask why you retired the Laser? Just curious
The laser did not really fit in any racing classes anymore. It had a great run, but it is time for some new challenges.

Long overdue Kiggly Racing TacoBishi update

So far 2024 has shown significant progress with several updates and considerable learnings.

Major update 1 - rear suspension. The leaf springs have been replaced with a linkage system. This is fully bolt into the factory locations and uses upper and lower longitudinal watts linkages to control axle pinion angle and provide anti-squat. There is also a lateral control linkage on the bottom of the carrier. The bolt is aspect is to maintain class legality (WCF and IFO). This was a huge step forward for the truck launching clean. There will be geometry updates over the winter as it needs more anti-squat, but this was a pretty massive change in how the truck behaves and feels. It goes way straighter and feels way more connected than with the leaf springs. Several track visits were spent dialing this in as far as the available adjustments would allow.

Major update 2 - aero updates. I made an aluminum bed cover and spoiler. The truck now has downforce. The rear suspension clearly shows lower ride height with speed during deceleration.

Major update 3 - fuel system issues fixed. I was limited to ~55psi until mid-August. I upgraded to a waterman XL cable drive and fuel pressure is now nice and stable at high rpm.

Major update 4 - transmission learnings and tuning. This is the biggest progress. I realized I could soften the hit with adding a tailored trans brake release profile. I changed my clutch apply and release approach and now have most of the gear shifts figured out. Previously all shifts but 6-7 were violent wheelspin. I gave up on the 2-3 shift and launching in 2nd gear because that shift is challenging to reduce enough so the tires don’t spin and give up 60’ time. Launching in 3rd gear gives a much better behavior and first try actually dropped from my previous best 1.316 60’ to a 1.227 60’. There is still lots to clean up and I think it will go mid 1.1’s with more work. The circle d converter is working really well and just like all the v8 rwd guys have found, relying on the converter for torque multiplication at launch just works!

So far everything is really promising with the setup. The last pass at the shootout it unfortunately sheared the mivec intake cam dowel at the 1/8mi and with a 5.13 at 142mph 1/8th running in the 65-68psi range it was on its way to a mid-7.8. The track was going away and I misjudged it a little along with being deep staged, so it was only a 1.322 60’. With a 1.20 that should be a 4.9x 1/8th and a 7.6x. Add the other 15psi or more this FP400 80HTZ has and I think we are in real business and also good shape for running ultra street locally (Milan). This also is nitrous only for spoolup so far. Not bad for running at 2975lbs! Repairs are almost finished, I got lucky and didn’t have any major damage, just a couple valves and rockers.

We hope to be out a few more times this year and with a little luck will get into the 4.8’s 1/8th and 7.5’s 1/4.

Thanks to those helping us along the way!
