alright so my friend had a 1997 eagle talon tsi wit the 6 bolt swap. but neways when he got the car after is sat for a year the head gasket blew and it over heated big time, so he got that fixed and not long after that the rear suspension busted when he hit a hole, so he got that fixed and ever sense day one of having the car the transfer case hasnt sounded too healthy but he never did anything, and jus recently he lost second gear, but today when he was on rout 250 in sandusky he said something sounded like it was grinding and the front tires kept locking up. thats coming from someone who doesnt know dsm too too well. but when i had him move his car foward i did hear a bad grinding noise. any ideas what one it could be tranny or transfercase or both?

Wow, I ran out of breath reading this....one of the longest run on sentences I've seen yet!

As for the issue at hand...it sounds like the t-case is heading out. Remove fill plug and add gear oil. If it takes quite a bit, either it was incredibly low since he bought it or your friend has a major leak. Dry gears in a t-case is definitely not a good combination.

Not to scare you or anything, but do NOT drive this car until you address this problem! These Transfer Cases will, on occasion, lock your wheels up while you are driving. Read this page for more information and how to fix your leak:

if it causes the front wheels to lock up it is not the transfer case!!! it is the tranny . same thing happend to me and it turned out the fwd part in the trans broke and so it would slip then lock up.

Thats what mine did in my 90 awd tsi when the drain plug fell out while driving and my front wheels locked up. I just went and put it on the lift, saw the missing bolt, bought a new one and then filled it with gear oil. it has run perfect since then

i was guessing it was the tranny cause second gear ended up getting really hard to get into an now it grinds into second everytime. so could the tranny have caused the whining?

I had the exact same problem. Just put my new engine in drove it 500ft. and it sounded like crap so I turned around and pulled into my driveway (which was a slight hill) and it couldn't make it up it. It would roll backwards though at first. Took it to my trans guy, he got in it, put it in gear just fine and went to pull it in the shop and it locked up again putting a quarter size hole in the bottom of the trans leaking out all that precious oil I just paid 18.90 a quart for.

wow that sucks and it sounds like this is a prob wit dsm's well does anyone kno how much a 2g awd 5speed trans cost used but good working order?

o yeaa thats a good idea, jon over at the dsm graveyard quoted me so good prices for my 90 tsi on an engine an body parts ill give them a call tmrw

I got mine for 650 shipped from Texas though my transmission guy. Wish it could have been cheaper but I guess that is a good rate.
