This morning i was driving my 1993 eclipse gs to school and when i go to shift the car just shuts off and i pull into a random driveway. i go to start the car again and just hear whinding and it doesnt turn over. look at the engine and the timing belt is loose any ideas to what this could be???

Sounds like something not good for sure, if you have a inch of play on your timeing belt, than you are definatly out of time, and your car would not start, do not try to turn over any more!, you are running a high risk of bending valves, if you have not already, pull your lower timeing cover off, find the broken part, replace it and then redo your timeing and do a compression test to make sure you didnt do any damage to your valves. am betting your auto tentioner or tentioner pulley went out on ya, :notgood:

To me it sounds like the belt could be stripped on the crank gear, have someone crank the car and see if the cam gears, or the crank pulley is turning, if the crank is turning and the camshafts are not then the belt is toast.

my dads guess was also that the tensioner went out but we have not turned the engine over so we dont bend any valves and we are going to start the tear down tommorrow and im sure ill be back with another question or two :banghead:

If he has an inch of slack in the timing belt then the cam gears aren't gonna turn. The other thing is his timing is off so if he cranks it over he could damage valves, piston, rods, etc. I'm with newtsiguy. If you crank it you may end up with paper weights and cool stuff for a wind chime for your garage.

I dont know if that (^^^) is the best advise, the bottom line is these are interfearence engines, I would not evan put the key in the ignition till you re-do the timeing, honestly, I would say you would be lucky if you havent already trashed your motor. keep us posted man

similar issue happened to me. Only somehow the oil filter came loose and I ended up seizing the head in my Eclipse. Turn the key and the engine would turn over but the cams were locked in place. Crank pulley was spinning in place, belt still tight. My money is on the tensioner as well. Being as these are interferance motors as stated above, as soon as you jump timing more than a tooth unusally, You get screwed and you need new valves. My guess being that you probably tried turning it over more than just a couple of quick starts, you have already done the damage. Time to rebuild.

update...
we started pulling the engine apart and we found out that the timing belt snapped!!!
so we decided to keep going and see if i bent any valves. we got to the torque bolts and dont have the correct tool. sooo we will resume tommorrow after we aquire said tool :ohdamn:

I would buy a new belt first and re do the timing and try to give it a compression test before i went in to pulling the head, sorry to hear about your troubles man, do you know what brand timing belt it was that snaped, was it an OEM, or a cheepy?

it was an expensive timing kit i dont know what brand but i will check after school but i just put it on at about 84000 and the car only has 90000 now. it was to my understanding that theses were supposed to last much longer.

wow it went out after 6k and you are not turbo. can you post pics after you rip into the timing? im betting there is something other than the belt that went bad like auto tentioner, definatly inspect everything thrice to see what caused you to throw a belt after 6k

we are still suspecting that the tensioner went out but we wont know till we get into it. we couldnt work on it today because we are still missing the tool and i had my internship so i was gone but hopefully we will be able to tear into it soon i already miss my dsm:cry:

man this engine is a pain to get apart we got all the bolts out of the head and the exhaust except one is hidden behind the engine mount so we decided to call it a day. its hard waiting i miss my eclipse so much but its also hard to work when you only get an hour to work on it at a time:sosad:

the first time i pulled a head off a dsm, it took me two days, i got it down to about two hours now, practice makes perfect, be sure when you lift the head off you have someone helping ya so you dont ding the head, good luck
