or do these dsm motors not last very long. almost every classified ad for an eclipse or other dsm has had the engine replaced and low mileage on the body. my 99 gst that someone gave me is in the shop getting the engine replaced. now either these owners are beating the mess out of these cars and running them w no oil or mitsubishi doesnt know how to build an engine that will last 80000 miles without a rebuild.

whats the most mileage that anyone has gotten out of their eclipse turbo ? and i would like feedback from people with just plain bold ons. no sense in adding people to this response that have a monster motor that blew up the third time at the track.

Not many buy these cars to leave them stock. You modify the car and then stuff breaks it's the name of the game.

it just seems strange that almost every car add reads that it has a replaced motor. i hope i get some decent mileage out of mine

Mine are both factory unmodified engines. 86k and 187k still running strong. I think people push the limits and change things around to get more HP and things tend to fall apart if not done correctly. Mine however have had no major issues.

Leave it bone stock and drive it point a to b, without getting on it like people do with cars that last over 100k on the stock engine.

They don't last because people try to cheap out on modding and destroy them. Stock ones last a long time if maintained properly.

Half of them is probably no maintenance or stupidity. When I got mine it only had 126K on it with a fresh rebuild, new crank and all. The moron before me jacked up the car buy the oil pan and crushed the pickup tube.

ouch!

From what I've seen, most of the time the failures are due to half-assed mods with no tuning (which could also be grouped in with stupidity) and/or lack of maintenance.

The cars themselves, if left alone, do tend to last.

This. These cars are a lot easier to destroy with out proper maintaince, bad gas, bad or no tuning, especially when you start modding them

Well, while I'm doing a swap my motor hit 189,000 miles. Just leaked a bit from seals being old but otherwise I was just fine as a DD. But now it's time to get it all jacked up ;-)

I have one that has 156,000 miles on the original motor that I have owned since I was 16, it's a 420a though. But my other one has 183,000ish on the original motor and it is a 4G63T.

I think it has a lot to do with maintenance and making sure the car is running properly. People lean or rich them out and never realize it. And there are those people that don't feel like an oil change every 2500 - 3000 is important. Oh and the people that drive them like they freakin stole them every day. That doesn't help either.

I think the most common ones i see with broken engines are the ones with broken timing belts or where the owner "tried" to install a new timing belt. As everyone has said it is all about maintenance. IF you follow normal maintenance intervals, don't rig things up and don't drive the hell out of it than you will get many many miles out of it.
