There is a guy on youtube named Jafromobile, he does a VERY in depth trans removal on a 2g, but from what i've seen removing the axles and whatnot is pretty similar on both platforms, although I cannot be 100% certain. But check out his videos and try again.

i watched the video earlyer and on the 2g it looks like there is alot more room to pry it out from under the car. Ive done alot of honda trannys i never had this much trouble.

It's a PITA, and may take a bunch of prying. That retainer ring can be a real pain to get compressed inside the transmission, so if you find yourself continuing with no avail, spin the axle and keep trying again. It's a pure-luck basis I find. I've removed both axles this year with only two pry attempts each, but when I did it a second time to drop the transission for a pivot ball shim removal, I spent about 40 minutes trying. Crazy. I have found, however, that the higher you can get the front end safely, the more leverage you can apply to your advantage. A short curved prybar helps.

Oh, and be very careful you don't nick the axle end (the shiny bit that goes into the seal) with your prybar/screwdriver when you finally pop it OMG Sometimes it happens if you're applying too much force upwards.

The key is NOT to pry because all you will be doing is forcing the retainer ring into a weird position that holds I stuck and there simply is not enough room to completely pry it out. The best thing to do is to put a large screwdriver or prybar right between the axle and tranny and QUICKLY pry towards the outer side of the transmission. The quick popping motion should release the axle after one or two tries. I have done this on every DSM I have owned and never had a problem, both 1g and 2g.

It's pretty easy, like zachakagoat said a quick pop with a pry bar will pop it loose. When reinstalling, make sure it's lined up and give it "shove" I guess would be the best way to word that. While holding onto the axle shaft, should hear it pop back into place.

I was able to do it the first time, every time
