I recently Bought a 93 eclipse gst for $2000... The car had a bad turbo (which I knew about and I had a 20g chinabay turbo with O2 dump laying around so I decided that I might as well use it! Anyways the power steering pump was also bad and I had to purchase a O2 sensor.. I later find out it has a bad clutch!!! Ofcourse after bleeding the hell out master cylinder and adjusting the rod under the dash.. along with removing the whole master and slave cylinder completely with lines from my 91 and installing and bleeding the crap out of it... I have had this car for a little more than a week and already have well over 24 hours of labor in her!!! :banghead: However, the body only has 118,000 miles and it is one of the best looking 1g's I've seen around here that hasn't been completely redone. The engine is supposedly rebuilt and looks clean under the hood and all so i guess that's a plus!! It has a 6 bolt swap and a thermal research and development cat back with a 3" down pipe and cat bypass. I hate buying used cars especially manuals that are meant for performance and abused!! Unfortunately, I have unconditional love for my DSM!!! :barf:

I know it will be better in the future!! I'm not giving up on her... This is my 3rd DSM and I already know that if I get rid of her I will buy another and it will have a ton of problems too!!! Plus its hard to find a good 1g shell around here.. Unless the car has been completely redone! I literally have about $1000 worth of suspension alone that I had bought for my 91 a few years back!!

I bought my n/t for 2k. Since then I have replaced 4 tire. Brakes and rotors all around. Clutch and tranny. 2+olts that hold the tranny to the motor. Corssmember bolts, welded the rear roll stop bracket. Intake un ghetto fied. Muffler that was flex pipe and wire hung welded back in. It happens.

Indeed!!! Wen I purchased my 91 gst 3 bolts were missing from the transmission!! The few bolts holding it together were loose and you could literally stick 2 fingers between the engine and transmission!!! I always wondered why I had to open the door and use my foot to get her in reverse!!! Needless to say when I tried to shift into reverse the lever would pull the transmission away from the flywheel clutch!! The flywheel and the pressure plate were drenched in oil!! Flywheel was warped and cracked... Both driveaxles were torn (inner and outer) Drove great in this condition suprisingly!!! While test driving 1 of my friends actually drove it at 110 in 3rd gear for a good 5 minutes!! I redlined the begeezus out of it and she still cranked 155 across all 4!! My 91 and 93 both had the flywheel inspection covers missing 2!! My 91 laser with the 1.8 was the best buy!!! Used to drive her 110 maxed out to get my check on Fridays!!! Car never showed oil pressure the guy I bought it from said the sending unit didn't work!! After driving her 110 all the time I burned up all the oil and noticed this only after I realized when I went around corners I HAD oil pressure... I continued to drive the car for another 2 years after that with no problems besides oil consumption and eventually sold her for $650!! The guy who bought it said he was gonna put a 3000 gt motor in it!! I said good luck!! Payed 800 for her she had a nice smack in the drivers side behind the door and a messed up tail light and bumper!! Pretty sure the frame was bent too!! Went through drivers side driveshafts like crazy!!! Only paid 800 for that one!! But did the brakes a couple times!!! The drivers side brake liked to stay engaged sometimes for sum "weird reason".!!

Too bad dude,
But when you patched it up it will be worth all your time and effords :D

Hell i just picked my 90 tsi up in august and all the seller said was it needs tires and wont start but very clean exterior and interior 8/10. LOL $600 Y not right? well happens to be a fuel pump and clutch job. Then when the tranny is off finding out that the dog ears are broke off and one bolt was holding the tranny to the block.... but Like everyone said it all in the DSM game Gotta Love it. i have probably drove my car about 8 hrs since august but when i do i love every second of it.

i probably have a month in labor alone gone thru 7 engines and had drove it no more than 5k miles in the last year and a half and still loving it!

why cry over 24hrs???

7 engines? I think you must be doing something wrong to go thru 7....

You dont buy a dsm to resell it. you buy it for its looks and ability to make mean power LOL.. and iv put so much time into my dsm its unreal. Looking at it sitting in the garage makes me sad i want the snow to go away every winter i get temped to sell it then soon as spring comes and i feel it spool up for the first time i remember y i kept it.

Yeah I got 2 of them taking up both of my garages and have no intention of selling either and might end up fixing the 91 instead of stripping it not in terrible condition but could use about $2,500 in parts and a lot of labor!! They are both sitting with their transmissions out and need clutches (the 91's transmission has a shaft stuck in it after a rebuild with only 30,000 miles!!) probably both in need of a clutch pedal assembly rebuild!!! I'm considering getting a sprung clutch and waiting till the car is more broke in for the unsprung disc!!! Most of my pressure plates are in good condition!!!

I searched the local area (everett to portland) for 3+ months and spent way to much time looking at junk beat up dsm's before I found my car... Pulled into the parking lot and knew i was going to buy it before I even drove it...

I don't mean to be rude, but sounds like you're quite the complainer. You whine about bleeding the clutch and brakes, and transmission swaps, but isn't that what makes us DSMer our own backyard mechanic?? The blood and sweat we lost to making our DSM unique and "fast"? All your doing couldn't have been gone to waste

I would check the pedal assembly also. That happened to me.

Also, doesn't sound like you were "ripped off". Sounds like you were introduced to the "love hate relationship" LOL.

I got my car with the motor taken apart in the trunk. Still fightin with it every now and then. But hot dam boost is fun!

That is a true statement. I didn't plan on spending more than $1500 (including the $1000 the car cost) total before summer-time on my DSM. Now I have spent $1500 in addition to the $1000 for the car, and can't stop buying and working. It's a sickness and I love it. :thumb:

I have well over a week of labor into my dsm and im still not done tearing it apart to begin throwing the new parts on! It takes lots of time and expecially patients! Cant own a dsm without patients! I just payed 3500 to do body work and paint to my baby and then 2 months later after all pretty and sitting in garage my brother gets mad at his friend and punches the rear driver quarter, cracks the fresh paint and puts a massive dent in it! Someone tell me why I didn't kill him! LOL

To the OP you got it easy man, my gsx caught fire on the way home after I paid the guy. Welcome to the life. :dsm:

CAnt have anything happen worse than this in my mind! ^^

Tell him a dent in his face might stop his jack-ass ways!! LOL Its almost always friends and family that cause visual damage!! I had a friend punch my frig when I was gone and he was hanging out with my room mate.. I immediately noticed it and the guy that punched my frig came back later that night and wondered why my frig had so many dents in it!! I told him probably because he dented it!!! Lol I punched the crap out of it and he up and left!!

Damn bro just bout my 92 GSX and it nearly caught fire on the way home too. Damn turbo seal completely blew on the interstate and started dumping oil directly into the J-pipe and IC.. and the turbo has about 1/4 inch shaft play or more. Sounded like a damn air raid horn til it popped.

Limped it home at 20MPH for 6 hours but hey.. Big 16g turbo installed this weekend..

Here is the kicker... Broken Banjo Bolt to turbo. spent about 5 hours extracting it to only find out ive got another week to wait on it .. and 15 bucks for 1 bolt.. jeebus

dont be upset i traded my 07 CBR 600RR that was mint for my 98 GST, was told all it needed was a slave cylider... changed it. then the Turbo went out Changed it. drove great for a month and then started having what i though was clutch probs. changed it now find out soon as i go to pick it up at the shop after the clutch is changed, that the crank walked. so now i am pretty much in the same boat have a very clean shell with a engine that now has to get pulled good thing i have another 2g i can use, darn 7 bolts, maybe i should invest in a 6 bolt haha

That is what we all do here, throw gobs of money at our cars and hope that they don't break down on us. I probably have 9 grand invested in six years and you won't see me selling my car. We do this cause we love our cars

Welcome to working on your own car. Just wait until you spend a weekend on a mod (prothane bushings) and have things brake off (TRAILING ARMS 2 DAYS LATER)!

That's the best!

Yup either you get lucky with a DSM you spend only half your free time and money on.. or a DSM from hell that takes all your free time all your money and patience.. but hey we love our DSM's and no matter how shitty our luck we just gotta throw more money at it to satisfy our boost craves

lets see im on my 9th DSM haha they are sooo much fun... 24 hrs eh... im like the rest of the guys here im sure i got 1000's of hours on mine... Prime example 90 AWD talon i use to have head gasket popped ok replaced it, put it back in time (did not know I had to roll the engine over by hand first or ELSE), it jumped time, bent valves, ok replaced valves gasket blah blah, same thing again... this happened 5 times until I learned to roll the famous 4g63 by hand after putting it in time atleast 7 times to ensure that it would not jump time again... so yeah lessons learned.

P.S.

Funny thing was that after putting it in time and not knowing to roll it over by hand id drive it around the car ran GREAT!!! i was like OHhh yeah.... MMmmm hahaha and then put put put BLAH..... took a $hit..... haha Welcome to our world!!
