am i getting ripped off?

I took my block, head, and crank to the local machine shop

and they told me i needed to bring pistons and head studs in..
so i ordered them and called and told them and asked how much the machine work is going to cost..

they said 1000 bucks...

Boring .20. Resurfaceing head and block
valve job i believe
and crank needed something done to it..
hot tanked block and head

can this really add up to 1000
if not what should i say to them

Depending on the complete list of things that they are doing/checking, it very well can cost that much.
I spent around $800 on labor alone for my block.

If you're truely concerned, ask them for a detailed explanation of billing before you have them start on the work. Then post it up for us to see and we'll let you know if it sounds fair or not.

Well finished it all. but now im in a money pit...
Is it worth it in the end? if i spent this and then the money to put everything together?

I as well had a lil over $800 with just having the block done. It would be very easy to have well over $1800 in machine work to your motor. Depending what you want done of course. I will suggest that you dont try to dremel your stuff out like ive seen few people do just to save some money. Most of them ended up having to take it to a machine shop anyways to fix what the f@kd up. Where as the machine shop has the precision tools needed to perform the task correctly. I would aslo recommend you research the machine shop you are going to prior to them doing the work. Just to have some peace of mind about their work. Good luck.

What i mean is.
Thats not just a price quote.. Thats the end price. They FINISHED all the work already. its 1040$ total.. But i was just seeing if 1000 bucks was reasonable.. i guess ill have to fork up the cash..

It it needs to work, then it needs the work. So, if you want it running well, then I'd say it's worth it. I have no regrets spending the money on mine.

It is hard to stomach sometimes, but it pays off when you get to enjoy the car afterwards.

Most machine shops/engine rebuilders will supply a detailed bill upon payment. It will explain everything that they did and each individual charge. That usually puts their labor into perspective and shows that their fees really are fair and accountable.
