Long story short - blew up my 1995 GSX in 2005 , got sick of the car and busy with life so I didn't touch it until now. Now I'm dropping a fully built 2.3L stroker in and I'm trying to figure out how to tackle the 7-year old gas in the tank.

From what I've read online, old gas transforms into a glue-type varnish that can gunk up valves and wreck havoc on an engine. Am I OK just draining the tank, flushing it out w/ a few gallons of clean gas, changing the filters and running it....or should I replace the tank and lines?

Also, recommendations on how to clean my injectors?

I ran into the same thing. The red car in my profile pics was sitting for 4 years with the pump hanger open. Talk about some rot.

What i did was dropped the tank and used a fuel tank restore kit on the outside of the tank.

As for the inside, throw a gallon of clean gas in there and some rocks and shake the hell out of it. Rinse and repeat until nothing but clean gas comes out. Then remove the rocks of course haha.

Odds are the fuel pump hanger and lines will need some work. Mine sure did.

Some something like this would be perfect:
STM | 90-99 DSM FUEL TANK TO RAIL KIT

Atleast half of the studs holding the pump hanger on will break off. This link will fix that. I know this stuff is for a 1g but you get the idea.

And how to modify the fuel pump hanger for AN lines

A little overkill yes, but just encase you dig into and need to replace it all. Hope that helps.

Easyest thing to do is try and find a new or used tank. You may want to have the injectors sent out to be professionally cleaned like at hurstinjector.com.. new fuel pump and in line filter filter should be good to go!

There also are places (check yellow pages) that clean tanks and can line the insides with a special resin guaranteed for life should you have any developing rust/corrosion problems (usually in corners or under straps - poke around with screwdriver to find them).

I dont think he would be having any rust issues since 2g gas tanks are the plastic material. What Id do is drop the tank (have to drop the rear subframe to get to it) and syphon all the gas out. Then swish around a gallon of fresh fuel in it. Im not real sure if that would really do anything but itd make me feel better doing it haha! I suppose if you didnt want to do the last bit you could just open one of the access panels and syphon out the fuel from there.

I agree with crash89. I just did the same to my nova that had been setting for years. All i did was drain tank. Put a gallon of fresh gas in and rinse and repeat. Had no problems after that. just make sure you change fuel filters.

Methylene cloride is used to remove the varnish from the tank. Phosphoric acid can be used to remove any jelled gasoline as well.

Some people say E85 works as well.
