Hey all. I’m having a few problems with my 1990 Talon Tsi awd. Ill just start from the top. Got the car a couple of weeks ago. Had a terrible oil leak. Pulled front timing cover and found the balance shaft seal had come out(no balance shafts). Replaced water pump and timing belt. Had all new idle pulleys and adjuster. After that was all done we had a hard time starting the car. No big deal. Replaced CLT sensor. When first starting I have to cycle the key a couple of times before she will idle, but she idles just fine. MIL comes on after a few mins of the car running. I read the codes. I got 21 23 24. So I’m going to check the CLT sensor again tonight. The cam position sensor I’m not sure about what to about that. The car gets horrid gas mileage atm. And under WOT and boost at high RPMs. She smokes a good bit. Not blue but black. I’m going to clean the air filter as it has a K&N in it. Also the turbo drain leaks a pretty good bit also. I’m going to get her on a lift and try to re-tap the holes as they are striped out. Also she comes down from high RPMS to quick. Unless I hold the throttle open to keep her up in RPMS she will just about drop to idle by the time I shift into the next gear. I am still new to this car but any help will be awesome. I’ve been working on cars for many years so throw me any ideas you have. Don’t be afraid to throw any electrical issues at me either. I am a Electronics Technician in the USCG.

well i can tell you at WOT you are running very rich (black smoke). have you done the usual tune up plugs wires etc. and your air filter could cause it to smoke black too as your not mixing enough air with the fuel. for your engine unwinding to almost idle id check to make sure all of the sensors are hooked up throttle pos.sensor. ive noticed with mine they sometimes dont like to stay on all to well

Sounds ike the car is staying in open loop. Check the wires on the MAF plug. Fought mine for a couple of months and found:

1 blown sensor ground in the ECU. Fixed that, still got CEL for CTS. Jumpered the wire from the plug to the ECU, same code. Finally twisted the prong for that wire slightly and it started making contact. Believe its the top left wire on the plug.

Also check for boost leaks. If you have a logger, check your O2 sensor. Sounds like it's really rich.

Good luck, let us know what you find.

I found the CLT temp sensor wires were corroded very badly. As i was pulling the connector off they pulled right out. Made some jumpers put them in all that fixed most of the problems:) No more codes are showing up. Still having that idle drop from rev though. Ill see what i can do about that.

Check your closed throttle switch on the throttle body. Also check that your TPS is adjusted properly.

The closed throttle switch works. That is one thing that I did check. Ill do a search on adjusting the TPS and see if that fixes that problem. On a side note ill do a search and see if this was bypassed but the Cooling fan comes on as soon as the ignition is in run and the cooling system light is on at all times. Never over heats just wondering if that could be another possible problem

So I fixed a fuel consuption issue. Did emmisions removal. And now I have two more problems that have come up. One is, Is that the timming belt is rubbing on something. Its on the engine side of the belt and its rubbing pretty bad. And something is also rubbin the entire top of the belt. Gonna order new belt and Try to get it over to my buddies that has a lift and try to figure that out. But before I do that I need to figure out whats up with my coil pack or transitor pack. Last night it started to run on 2 cylinders. Hopefully its a simple fix. But fuel economy whent way up. Without gettin into it i was doin around 25 mpg. and that was mostly at about 80 MPH

Just found this thread, got a couple of questions. Is your BOV recirculated back into the intake? Did you ever check your o2 sensor voltage to make sure it's cycling and in closed loop?

Low coolant levels or a dirty/clogged sensor in the bottom of the overflow tank can cause the coolant dash light to tun on. I would pull the coolant overflow tank, clean it our really good with a water hose, and then reinstall it and fill it up.

As for the timing belt rubbing, it could be rubbing on anything, do a quick search for examples. This is usually due to improper tension on the belt itself. Did you follow the steps when installing the belt and tensioner to make sure it was properly tensioned? Timing Belt VFAQ (Timing Belt TSB - ENHANCED)

This is how you test the coil pack:

And this is how you test the power transistor:

For you black smoke and WOT problems, I would start with a boost leak test. You can make you own tester and then pressurize your intake system and look for any leaks. Since your car is 21 years old, I can guarantee that you have some and these will cause all sorts of problems.

Hope this helps! Good luck on getting everything straight, sounds like you're off to a good start. Anything you need, let us know.

Thanks for the tips 9!'clipseDOHC . Ill use those two tips later today to figure out whats wrong. As with the other issues ive got them covered. The coolant light was just a empty overflow bottle go figure. The black smoke was fixed with a new 02 sensor and i found the pig tail for the coolant temp switch was so far degraded it fell apart so i fixed that. So now its just the timmin belt and this missing issue. And i just put a brand new timmin belt on her when i purchased her wich was the start of april. Looks like new one is gonna be in the works.

Sorry i havnt updated sooner. I checked the coil pack. All tests SAT there. I clean up the transistor pack. Didnt test it and put everything back on and so far she has ran great. Tommorow my FMIC piping kit comes it. So if its nice out im going to pull the front bumper off and start with that. I already have a IC that i got for my Rx7 but as i picked up a water to air IC for free ill use that on it. Im going to make a boost leak detector also. Think my injector seals are going out. I found a mod that i may be doing soon. Depending if i have the money. I found a Cyclone intake i might pick up. Also i may try to make a DIY pvc intake. or metal intake.
