Toronto,
Im building a 1G head and already have a set of Ferrea valves, 3G lifters and a set of HKS 272 on each end.

I see on slowboyracing site that HKS springs dont come with retainers.

Just wanted to know if anyone is using HKS Springs and if so what retainers are you using with them?

thanks

I have HKS springs, but unfortunately I have no clue what retainers are being used. My *guess* would be stock? I have a list of the aftermarket items that went in the motor (somewhere) and don't remember ever seeing a reference to any retainers.

i'm using hks spring with crower retainer and comp cam 2... no modification need to be done just a bolt on affair. Right now i'm reving my engine to 9000rpm without any problem with valve float.

Without any kind of shimming?

I remember when Keith from BM Tranny(now merged with TurboTrix) used the HKS springs. He couldnt get the car to revv over 7k. In a recent chat on a local board, he told me not to use HKS springs without proper shimming.

Stock springs have been taken to 9000 with 272s.

I don't know anything about HKS springs for 4g63 engines. I do know that HKS springs for SR20 engines are barely different from stock and are kind of a waste of money. My friend had a set that he dumped for Crower springs after reading spring testing results.

Hmmm, my experience so far is that stock springs float at around 7800rpms. My HKS springs are good for 8000 (or more, who knows, I only have an 8k limiter).

Unfortunately, that's all the input I have to give!

i'm using it with fp2 only and next month will try to use it with BC280 a little higher lift and seem a bit squre. .. but my freind running it with fp3 and facing a valve float if rev more than 7k+.. supertech is the cure for that.

there was a thread about this a while ago with the spring rates here or on another local forum. Either way I would say get the Manley Springs. They seem the highest spring rate of all the test. They are supposedly the only single spring that will do good with the FP2x and FP3s.

Are you using brain crower retainers or just normal crower ones?
