HELP crank pulley flew off!!!

I just put a new Alternator belt on my car, and was driving around my little 4 mile "test course" near my house. I pulled out from a stop sign and when i shifted to second, i heard a lound *Clunk* and then felt something get run over by my back tire. I looked at my gauges, and immediately my battery and coolant light came on, so i figured it was the alt belt. this was confirmed when i looked in the mirror.

I drove home, parked it and popped the hood. My alt. belt was indeed gone, along with THE CRANK PULLEY!!! I panicked, thinking it did serious other damage under the hood, but amazingly i didnt see any, although i might be wrong. I then ran(no other vehicles to use) down to the spot where i lost my belt, and sure enough, there was my pulley sitting on the side of the road.

What caused this to happen? i did notice a slight chatter that followed the rpm when i approached the stop sign. thats all the warning i got. please help i really need this car to run, i have a lot of stuff to do!

did it completely fall off or was it the harmonic balancer?

after awhile the stock one will separate..time for a new one

No, it was the whole thing, pulley, balancer, everything, its like the bolts just fell out and off it went. i dont understand why it would do it so suddenly though.

That is very odd. What happened to your belts?

the belts are fine, not torn or shredded. Im gonna go look at it, maybe the bolts lossened themselves, even though they were torqued down...
