Belt flew off...

Well my belt has been making a little "squeak" since I got it (about a month ago). I didn't pay much attention to it, just figured it needed to be tightened a little. Well last night me and my friend went to the drag strip. I wanted to see what kind of numbers I could pull stock and then run it after I do mods to see the difference.

Anyways...I got up there and we ran. I passed the time signs and took it out of gear to coast to the end of the track. I get to where you have to turn off and notice it's hard to turn. I though at first my car had quit. It was loud as crap out there so I couldn't hear the engine running. Well I put it in gear and notice my engine lights and stuff are not on and I give it gas and off I go. Ok...it was a straight road back so when I go to turn to get my slip I notice it is still really stiff. I decide it's time to head to the house at that point.

Well I get up this mourning and pop the hood. The power steering belt is all the way off. Its off every freaking pully. Just hanging there. What could have caused this?

Should I just put the belt back on and try to tighten the tensioner? Also I searched and didn't really find anything. Any write ups on how to do this? This is my first DSM so I am just learning to work on it. Still waiting for my freaking Helms to come in

Why didn't you turn the car off and check as soon as you noticed a problem? If the belt looks like shit, which it probably does, just pick up a new one with a tensioner, then install it.

Cause I couldn't stop on the track. I checked after I pulled off the track but it was so dark I couldn't tell. Actually the belt looks good. Just one litte nick on the back side.

holy shhhhh you too eh? Well heres my story......I bought my car about a month ago and after i bought it noticed that the alternator belt was being held on by only 2 grooves, So i brought it to firestone and got all my belts replaced(including my timing blet) and thought i wouldnt have anything to worry about.....Well in a one month time period my belts have fallen off a total of 6 times(not including my timing belt) :thumbdown All the belts were under warranty so everytime i bring it back to firestone they replace it for free and this last time i brought it there they said they have no idea whats wrong with my car and said they will give me a refund for the labor and parts for the alternator and power steering belt, and they recommend bringing it to the dealership.........

note: My belts have only fallen off in a drag race or running it hard at high rpms(around 5-7)

Yeah my friend said this is a common problem for these cars and that it happens in higher RPM's. He said something about getting a shim from ? Don't know what that is exactly.

I was hoping you would post. Thats what I thought at first was my harmonic balancer. Any certain way to check this? Also do I have to just replace the balancer or the crank pulley also?
