Has anyone tried the new HKS 280's?

Someone told me they are supposed to give you the power of the 272's with the driveability of the 264's... but I just don't believe him. Anyone else try these yet?

I have not tried them, but from my readings in various car magazines, they are supposed to be a race only cam... like very lumpy idle, and made for even more top end than the 272's, so not really street friendly.

I doubt they would give hardly any driveablility. On a sidenote...where the hell you been Jason? Been a while since I talked to Matt since I moved to AZ.

I wouldn't believe him, like jasonlee said they are supposed to be a race cam. They would have worse driveability then the 272's as they add even more duration for that top end power but of course give it up in the lower end. Think they've been out for some time for the Evo's. Maybe your source has them confussed with FP's X series of cams which even though offer more lift over the origional versions, help with driveability because of the increased ramp rate.

My buddy has a set of hks 280's (in / exh) in his VIII and they idle like the 272's with a good tune, also they are 1 billion, trillion, fafillion (I think you get the point, ha ha) better on the top end then the 272's. I don't have any solid numbers for ya but he goes on tuesday the 14th to get the car dyno tuned some more I'll see what I can get then, keep in mind that he has an evo not a 1g or 2g so it'll be a little different.

No offense but only a dumb person would say that. How would a bigger cam give you the same power as the smaller cam AND the driveability of an even smaller cam? And what would be the point then? :tease:

Increase the ramp rate :shhh: , but only to a certain point. Help yes but not make the new "huge" cam, that makes more power then the middle cam have driveability like the "small" cam. Doubt HKS changed the ramp rate at all.

Well I was talking to someone at this place called Keystone in exeter PA. And I always like to ask you guys before actually BELEIVING them. Plus they carry HKS and Crane and Crower cam's. And I asked them for a good cam if I were to run 9:1 compression N/A 4 banger, and they were like, the bigger the better! I am planning on going on 9:1 forged internals and then turbo'ing the car as my buddy owns about 2 or 3 crashed turbo dsm's. Although, the turbo'ing won't happen for almost a year as I'm trying to get a nissan driveable enough to have while this car gets turbo'ed and all this work done. So I am trying to hunt down a good cam for this N/T car, and I already use a 93 TSI AWD stock intake cam. But it feels like my power is all from about 3-5 grand... Not very useable to me.

I would go with BC 280 cams. A lot cheaper and very proven.

I haven't read a single review on the stage 3 BC cams for our motors. I don't see how you can claim a set of cams is "very proven" when there has been very little to zero hard data to compare the BC cams to proven cams such as FP3s and HKS 272s.

Maybe he ment BC is a proven company because yeah your right I don't know how they can be called proven when haven't they been out for less then 6 months?

My only question really is, if HKS claims the 264's power is 1800 to 6800, and 272's are 2400 to 7400... than what are 280's... like 3000 to the moon?

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the lower number, any turbo that is larger then stock won't make power at those kind of rpms, so the lower number seems like a gimic. With any cam you should expect to loose some rpms in spool time, but is more then worth it for the upper rpms gains. The 280's would work well past the factory rev limiter.

I was refering to the company name. I don't personally know anyone using 280's as they would be terrible on the street.

So since I don't really like going past 7 grand ALLLLL that much, the 264's would give me the best power for the range I'd be in most of the time 4-7 grand, or would it be better to just get the 272's, upgrade the valvetrain, and just go from around 5 - 7500?

A friend of mine has the BC 280 cams in her GSX. She just dropped em in. No need to dial them in. The only problem was the idle and the car stalling, but again, we're talking about a huge cam. She trapped 119.x on a 50trim with these cams. 93 octane

A girl has them! I'm in love... But I heard them in a EVO and idle is rouge but manageable. How often does it stall out of her? What spring/retainer combo does she use?

I think I am gonna go conservative... 272's and 11:1 cr and staying N/T... why, engine needs rebuilt, I don't have the full money to go turbo, and wouldn't it be fun to smoke the lower end turbo cars and have them wonder how the heck you did it.

Not to burst your bubble but it's going to take more than that to smoke stock turbo cars.

She's using manley springs and retainers. Her dsmlink helps keep the car from not stalling out. Raise the idle to 1k yada yada. I think she has it all sorted out. I'll try and get her to post in this thread.

Yea I was planning on using my dsmlink to turn it to 1k but then it doesn't lope like you would like :p So I'm settling for 800rpm and just take my chances and have that mean thumping. Gonna use BC spring/retainer as ordering BC 280's.

Yes Jessica gained 28 whp going to the BC 280s vs the HKS 264-272 combo. I have talked to her and she said that what little she did lose on the low end wasnt bad compared to the topend that she gained. With any upgraded cam i would suggest raising your idle, i have mine set at 1k and you cant even tell i have cams (the 264/272s). Im on a little bit bigger turbo than her so i had to order a set for myself. I dont daily drive my car so bad idle isnt a thing to worry about for me. I cant wait they will be here on friday, also anyone that wants a set of 264/272s with low miles, i am selling mine.

Chris

who did you go through to get them? if you got them from BC, there from CA so it will take over a week to get them. its taking a week to get mine from them and im in MO

I ordered them through VIPgarage. They actually came in today. Seven days isn't bad. Marty told me he didnt have the springs and retainers in stock either. I guess i was just too anxious to wait. LOL
