Hey guys,

I've been around for a while, but right now I just have an Eclipse GS, so I haven't gotten real into heavy mods for obvious reasons. After having the car for almost 3 years now, I want to upgrade to a GSX.

I found this car not to far from me ...
1997 Eclipse GSX 2.3 Stroker

Does it look like a good start? I don't know much about the internals. Usually I like to look for stock cars, but finding a 15 year old car, all factory isn't easy. I am not trying to go mod crazy when I get it. If I do get it I probably won't do any modifications unless I have to.

Is dsmlink necessary right away or is that something I can do down the road after I familiarize myself more with the car?

Will I be able to pass emissions without the O2 sensor and cat?

Any other questions I should ask the owner?

Thanks,
Joe

It seems decent to me. But there is always a huge risk when buying a used car that is modded like this one. It can either be a great deal and a lot of fun or a complete money pit. Its hard to tell without actually seeing the car in person and driving around in it.

Dsm link is something you will want. It is not necessary right off the bat, but I along with most members on here would recommend getting it ASAP.

As for emissions, it really depends how strict the emission laws are where you live. Only way to tell is to go test it. If it doesn't pass then add a cat and try again and so on.

Ask for a history of the car ect ect..

If the body is clean, no rust or big dents. I'd say for sure. As long as he has good maintnence records and recipts on parts should be fine,

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think you could use a 4g64 crank and it still be a 6-bolt...anyways make sure you know the in and outs of it before you offer anything. If you have any concerns, come back and we'll help you figured it out but IMHO he's asking too much.

Common misunderstanding with the 4G64 thing. He probably meant 4GCS crank out of a 6 bolt 2.4 hyundai. Cause if you look at my name it should be cornfed4GCS as I have an actual 2.4 hyundai block in mine. But in his defense if ppl say I have a 4G64 more ppl will know what Im talking about, instead of saying 4GCS.

I can understand that but if you're looking to by a car that modified then you should probably understand the difference. Just my .02

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure the parts he has listed go ok together. I wasn't sure if you'd be able to tell how reliable it would be, but with custom parts I guess there is no telling. I was trying to look for a factory 98-99, but wasn't sure if a car with a rebuilt motor and trans would be better than a factory one with approx. 100,000 miles.

Most likely I'd end up selling my GS and use the GSX as my daily. Not quite in the position to have two cars.

What you think this thing is worth?

Cool story^

The reason I made the thread was more to see if the various modifications are a good match for each other. I only asked what its worth because a couple people mentioned that it isn't worth the asking price, but gave no indication of what they thought it might be worth. I don't know much about the internals of these cars, hence the reason I posted in the newbie forum.

I would say it is worth the money with those modifications. If you buy a nearly stock car and mod it, you will spend a lot more than 5500 to get the car to where that one is. Ask for receipts and find out who built the engine to see if they are credible. Just because a car is modded doesn't make it worth less money IF its done right.
