hey guys I have came accross a 95 gsx with 660's and a afc.... It has no compression on 2 cylinders(1,2). Im not really worried about not having compression, I have used a MLS head gasket before and did not work.. tourqued the head that time to 80 lbs.

Im going to be using APR head bolts for this project, will a graphite hg work good enough to hold the psi im shooting for???

what do you guys recomend?

The OEM composite head gasket is fine for your application up to 20-22psi, and with ARP head studs, it will definitely hold it all day long up to 30psi -- but don't get too greedy.

Anything more than 22psi, I reccomend the ARP head studs with the factory OEM Mitsubishi Multi-Layer-Steel head gasket (MLS). The head gaskets have been proven to over 50psi with no problems. I have seen SCE titan's, and cometics fail many times now. Stick with stock, it will last longer.

The MLS head gasket is a great piece, and it is a good pick for almost all applications. The HKS gasket is also a nice piece, but triple the price. The only benefit of that gasket is that you can get it in several different thicknesses to compensate for block and/or head surfacing.

As well, a .020" overbore will not affect sealing of the MLS gasket.

Build in O ring wire? Anyone heard anything about these bad boys?

Yea, there good gaskets. I know a few guys on here run them with no problems but there is a thread somewhere in the newbie forum I think who blew one.

Jake Montgomery used a felpro headgasket and when his block blew he still had to peel the gasket off so I think that gasket was def holding some power.

It's funny to see all the Fel-pro haters without any real world experience. Its a fact that the Fel-pro MLS is the best HG out for our cars...PERIOD! Now as for the Fel-pro composite HGs, a friend had one on his stock block along with ARPs when he trapped 140mph. It held up fine trapping 135-140mph in the 1/4. It's detonation that kills HGs, along with improperly installing them ei. block/head not clean/flat, improper torque sequence, not retorqing after heat cycle, and so on...

Won't the headgasket be a little small because of my overbored cylenders?

cometic head gasket is your friend like i said if you are built go with the metal head gasket i dont know if oem makes a gasket for oversize bore
but you should not have a problem finding a metal head gasket for your set up since is a race set up

Mitsu MLS is way overkill for this guys goals. WAY overkill. There will be the need to properly prep the block and head and most likely mill the head to reflatten it. Not only does the MLS gasket cost nearly $100, but you hae over $100 of work to do. . . for a 300-400whp car?

The fel-pro IS the OEM composite headgasket. It just has blue paint on the topside signifying that fel-pro boutght it from the same vendor the dealership bought theirs. fel-pro badges composite gaskets. I've studied them side-by-side. Also, the $16 partsdinosaur.com composite gasket is the same thing. GP Sorensen does the same thing. You can get a mitsu knock sensor branded GP Sorensen but it is a Mitsu unit. I have run 30psi daily driven with my 60-1 with a fel-pro. I've had similar results with the parsdinosaur gasket.

If you had a fel-pro fail, then swapped to the dealer gasket and no failure; you either changed your tune, it got cooler out, or you happened to do the headgasket install properly that second time.

I used a fel pro composite with arps. Held 30lbs on my 50 trim just great. When I pulled the head off I had to peal that sucker off the block.......

Fail-pro.head gasket are junk. I used one on the gst I had,and boost chewed through it. The mitsu cosmetic gasket has a steel like rings that wrap around the top of the cylinder walls to prevent any boost from chewing. The mls head gasket are the best! They are bound to take a beating up to 35 psi. The trick is getting it to seal good. Deck your head and a spray some copper on the gasket and you should be good to go. Also, some Apr studs should really go along with that.

Never use copper spray on a multilayer hg.

Maybe that's the case but I dunno. Not what I was getting at though. There was a thread on here somewhere talking about copper spray if it helps to do a search. I just got home from work and I'm lazy. But to the point, the expansion rate of aluminum differs from that of the block. And when you put the copper spray on the gasket, it makes it stick and when the head heats up, the gasket can't slide around and ends up warping and causing leaks.

Forget which gasket I had on my stroker motor but it said right on the packaging, "DO NOT USE COPPER SPRAY".

Ive ben using a mistu 4 layer for a while now and love it. Also if you have need a ticker headgasket you can use two mitsu 4 layers and take one a part we did this on a friends car held up great

Seeing how I sell the felpro headgaskets along with other gaskets from them for a living I feel the need to chime in and correct some of this hear say. First off both felpro hg's for our cars are mls. The basic one is part number 9627PT and is reffered to a a peradry-plus gasket while the 1153-1(which I have and am running on my current build) is also a MLS hg but is made for high performance applications. The 1153-1 cost around $180-220 and is the cream of the crop. This hg with L19's will hold anything short of a shep like setup.

- It is callled a permadryplus gasket.
- The fel-pro 9627pt or simply 1153 is not a MLS, but rather an essential OEM specified composite gasket.
- 1153-1 for 160 plus shipping here. LOL

The new permadry-plus which I already stated in my first post ARE MLS they just don't have the rings around the water openings and the cylinder openings. That's a pretty good price you got on your felpro, but all I did was contact our felpro rep and he brought me one FREE

Ive been running a fel-pro composite on my setup with arps. Never had a issue 30+psi and 26-28psi on pump gas, 60-1 2.4. Im going to see how far it will go on a alittle bigger of a turbo with more boost.

I just blew my cometic hg after 15000 miles. I think it did really well because it held up to me teaching myself how to tune.... I plan on using another one when I get her back together, but I am not going to use copper spray, and I am going to retorque after heat cycles like I should have the first time... I would agree that ARP studs and an OEM hg would be fine for the OP's goals. :dsm:

The other thing that helps to consider is the hg thickness. When the head/block gets shaved, and then going with a thinner metal gasket, the valves and pistons are closer together. That effects the engine phase timing for the valves opening and closing at the correct time. I'm going with a Fel-pro on my next build personally.

The 9627pt are not a multi layer steel hg, they are a mesh of metal bits crammed into a metal frame.
